  • The townscape of Fukiya is a splendid and orderly townscape unified by red copper-colored Sekishu tiles and red-brown exteriors. This townscape is the greatest cultural heritage left to future generations by the rulers of Fukiya from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. .
The mansions built by wealthy merchants using their wealth can be seen all over the country. However, what is unique about Fukiya is that rather than individual mansions being luxurious, the entire town was unified by the master carpenters invited from Sekishu (present-day Shimane Prefecture) after consultation. It was built based on a concept that was surprisingly advanced at the time.
In 1970, it was recognized as a hometown village of Okayama Prefecture, and in 1972, the Agency for Cultural Affairs designated it as a nationally important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings, and on June 19, 2020, it was designated as the birthplace of ``Japan Red.'' It has been certified as a Japan Heritage site as ``The Land of Bengara and the Copper Town, Bicchu Fukiya''.
