My two best friends recently died. One of them a month ago, the other a year ago. One night the three of us were hanging out on a Saturday night having ourselves a good time, laughing and driving around when my friend in the passenger seat asked my friend sitting in the backseat to sing for us. My friend in the backseat could sing very well and was in a gospel group with his brothers. He sang "a change gonna come". Little did I know that he was going to end up singing it to his funeral months later and now he's gone now too. These men were literally like brothers to me and now each time I hear this beautiful song, I dedicate it to them. Junie and JD, this is for you. My brothers
I first heard this song in the summer of 1964. I was in the Army in Germany when my brothers turned me onto it. It quickly became the Black National Anthem. It remains one of the most powerful songs I have ever heard.
One of the greatest songs of that era and for the years to come. Cooke had heard Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," and felt deeply that he, too, had a great song within him and let it emerge into one of the finest pieces of music of the civil rights era. I'd always liked his music and, when I was coming home from school one day, my older brother told me that Sam Cooke had been killed . . . I was devastated. Couldn't believe that such a great voice had been stilled. RIP, Sam Cooke.

Our home appraisals are valued at so much less but ask your white friend to stay and put up pictures of her white family and boom it's value is 100k higher. It's that shit that makes things hard. It is me being looked over for a promotion but the person they picked has zero experience but the customer wanted someone white to represent her. They obliged because she brings millions to the company. I get so tired. It happens so many times to black folks and we get tired. Maybe Africans should stay in Africa instead of allowing other countries to take their resources. Oh yeah. They can't. They sold off their best and brightest in the slave trade.
57 years to the day the world has been without Sam Cooke. The world needed more of this great man, but this song will be his long lasting legacy that will impact every generation to come. Love you, Sam, hope you’re resting easy
I miss him somehow. And he was gunned down recklessly 2 decades before I was even a twinkle in my father's eye. It makes me sick. He had so so so much more to give. He's just that good soul you inherently know if that makes sense.
There are many like him still fighting and living the struggle but they are not wealthy nor singers so they do not matter...even to their own kind. Make the change happen, don't wait for it to happen.
@ a name Sam was probably killed by some cia or black ops agent because of his straight to the point lyrics and sheer musical genius...I'm sure they thought he would be a threat to the fragile peace and state of the nation back then...Such paranoia does the nation such an injustice...
I’ve been faced with a moral dilemma... I honestly really want to like your comment... but it has 69 likes and I think it’d be wrong to ruin that for you
When I was in rehab going through a very hard detox from heroin the director played this song and it made me cry 😢 Seven years later I still play this song !!! Change did come 🥹
Currently in rehab. First week detox. I’m starting to feel emotions again. I’m realizing the pain and suffering I’ve caused my family. I’m trying my vest to be an honest person again and you know that us addicts have to fight like hell because our lives depend on being clean. This morning I was outside smoking and this popped into my head. Played it out loud on my phone because I sold my headphones and speakers for drug money (of course), and I realized the change came right there. I hope you did too, and I hope you’re still clean. If not, get your shit together right now because you’re gonna die and be remembered as a junky. It’s up to us. I’m sorry for this comment being a little all over the place. I’m only a few days clean and I can’t think right yet. All the best, Jennifer.
So excited to hear your story and triumph over this ordeal. I'm right there with you with my addition and I'm glad to say I'm two years sober. Bless you and continue that path!
I cry Everytime I hear this song. it makes me think back on all the trials and tribulations I've gone through and survived and I thank God for bringing me through it and for making me who I am today because of it.
Yeah so many have tried but Cooke owned this song. You can feel that he meant every single word he sang and had actually lived it. There's a unique strength and soulfulness in his voice that no other singer has been able to replicate.
Today marks 59 years since the tragedy of Sam Cookes death. We’ll never truly know why this great man was murdered, but we will forever be thankful for his contribution to music and society. A great artist makes a great song, a legend makes a great impact. Sam Cooke is the definition of a legend. May God rest his soul, and may his music be listened to long after we’re gone.
I think it's pretty clear why Sam Ccooke "was murdered," unless you ignore the obvious, as well as two corroborating witnesses, both corroborated by polygraph. I think our entire culture needs to stop calling rapists "great men."
Tears and chills. I wish this song wasn't still relevant but it is. Thank you Sam Cooke for your beautiful vocals. I hope one day this world will be fair and just
I’m 14,and this song just delivered me.I don’t know how but it just saves my life from a lot of things,Thank you Sam Cooke for this song i hope it changes the 21st century 🥺🤧
@@thomasluby1754 this is a song from the 1960s ... why do you think he decided to write, record, and sing this song? He felt the pain of these times, the segregation, the hate, but he saw a better future and you can hear it in this song right here. You’re so ignorant and blind, open your eyes to what history was and how it affects today. I could insult you, but I could never stoop to a racist’s level.
I agree and funnily enough, as I said to #DrPaulMiller very recently, our music sounds the way it does because it conveys our cry of injustice ... their souls are crying for us.
The Civil Rights anthem. It doesnt get any better. Sam Cooke is the greatest singer this planet earth has ever heard! R.I.P. to the late great Sam Cooke. An icon!!
I've said this before on other platforms, but IMHO Sam Cooke was right up there with Bobby Hatfield, Michael Jackson, and Aretha for pure vocal talent. A CRIMINALLY underrated singer and completely unappreciated singer nowadays.
God showed me a very short vision of Sam Cooke. He was standing on stage , looking directly into my eyes as he sung a song I’d never heard of into his microphone 🎙️It was so surreal and clear. May his soul rest 🙏🏾
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Thank you for serving. My husband with the 101st over there. He is thankful he survived as well. He says his mission was to stay alive ...Never did find out why we were really there.. But so glad you are here.
Your throat was kissed by GOD, HIMSELF, Mr. Cooke. One of the best singing voices in my humble opinion I have ever heard since my birth, 1976. Music has always been by biggest, #1 Love of my life. However you left this world, Mr. Cooke, I hope to meet you someday, when you sing this song because you wanted to, not because you had to. 😊❤
This song is pure gold. As a young child I listened to my late father play his Sam Cooke records. I always loved that voice and songs like Wonderful World, Cupid, You Send Me were really beautiful, but when I listened to A Change Is Gonna Come, even as a young lad that song used to hit me in a kind of spiritual way. As I grew a bit older and really understood the meaning of the song it all made sense. I've been listening to it for over 40 years and I believe it's one of the greatest and most important tracks ever recorded.
@@cooper523 You're right. Sam Cooke had an amazing and beautiful voice. His songs like You Send Me, Wonderful World, Cupid, Chain Gang, A Change Is Gonna Come, Bring It On Home To Me are truly classic song's. It's such a shame that young people don't listen to these beautiful gems. If they did maybe it would influence them in a good way. I know that voice and the songs really hit me even when i was young and they have stayed with me to this day. When i play a Sam Cooke record it just makes me feel better.
I wish he had lived long enough to hear Whitney Houston. I he had been still been around and still singing, they would have collaborated for sure for at least a song or two.
“ it’s been too hard living, but im afraid to die. Cause i don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky..” Amen brother... stay blessed this year everyone.
58 years without Sam Cooke. God bless Sam, his entire family, and the fans that keep his music alive today. He is the greatest singer to ever live, and forever will be. Never let the music of this powerful, amazing man die out.
This song and, thus, Sam Cooke, will never die. As long as injustice persists -- one of the worst parts human nature, consciously eliminated from some folks but heavily practiced by others -- this song is relevant to the max.

My grandad passed away a month ago, and this was one of the songs we’ve played at his funeral. Sam cooke was his favorite artist and we’ve always listened to him when dropping me off and picking me up from elementary school. I will always cherish those times.
Hoping that a change is gonna come is all that gets me through the day most of the time. I have shared this song many times when it looks like there isn't any hope just to remind us what is possible if we hold on and fight.

Why do we always have to mention our race in order to make a point or just to comment on something? We have to stop doing that, you loving the song has nothing to do with your race.
@@ronaldbrown5842 Maybe you are too young to understand that race has been an issue in this country for a VERY long time. Maybe you just do not see it, or do not want to see it, but the color of the skin has made some people in this country COMPLETELY unable to access certain freedoms and opportunities that we all have the right to live with. That is why the above posters mention race. It is good to see that they have the sensibility to feel and empathize. I fell into this page as I researched the play Fences.
@@ronaldbrown5842 This was written during the civil rights movement, so it has a lot to do with the injustice of racial division we are sadly revisiting. We seek connection and music unites us more than anything.💙

He died shortly after releasing this song, those close to him who heard it first said it gave them chills and they felt as if it was a premonition of his death.
This song, which turns 60 today, always moves me deeply. The way Cooke expresses the struggle for justice and equality touches my heart and makes me reflect on the battles we still face today. His powerful voice and the timeless, inspiring message of hope in change remind me of the importance of persevering and believing that better days will come.
One of the greatest songs of all time, if not the greatest. Words cannot describe how much I enjoy this song, at 15 years old it's one of the only songs that makes me emotional, it's the passion, and pain in his voice, it's empowering, especially as a mixed raced boy.
I can't think of any other song that stirs this kind of emotion. As you get older your feel it more. I pray Sam is resting in peace. I hope he knows the masterpiece he left us.
Listening to this in light of recent events. The outpouring of support against police brutality and racism is so overwhelmingly positive. I am excited and optimistic about the future for the first time in a long time. I’ve never felt so in the majority of people as opposed to the minority like I do now. I believe that change is going to come. I believe we are pushing toward that and we are making noticeable progress! Rest In Peace to George Floyd, and all the others who have passed similarly. This fight is for them, for us, and for the next generation 🙏🏾
So very true so few see both sides of pretty much everything he is with the other music greats geniuses and among those yet to come along but some things just aren't meant to happen in our time but through great suffering and change great things do arise and come to those truly Godly meant to be blessed by their own understanding and I pray that everyone gets to see and accomplish helping all those in a positive way that they want or need to in Jesus great and holy name amen and to everyone near far or wherever you are right now merry Christmas and wether your able to hear or know you are loved and needed

On this day in 1964, Sam Cooke was shot dead in an LA Motel under strange circumstances. It's important to remember his effect on the history of our nation, as well as in Music History. Sam is the King of Soul!
A very poignant year. It was created a year after my arrival smack dab in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement. In Sept 1963, bombing of church in Birmingham. In 1964 three young men were abducted and slaughtered in Mississippi (the movie Mississippi Burning?). In 1965, Viola Liuzzo would be chased down and murdered, but the legend of this song is it was written after Sam Cooke and entourage were turned away from a whites-only motel. As much as we rant and rave against racism, the main source remains entrenched. Government laws which label and divide the masses remain.

Read more and weep for yourself a whole lot less. PS Sam was not your "brother".

@@thomasluby1754 : Do you realize there still isn't equality in this country? Anytime I walk down the street and I am stopped because they don't think I belong in the neighborhood. I bought a home in a nice neighborhood where my white neighbors don't think I belong. So many blacks have to deal with that.

Jennifer, I hope your still in the same spirit, love you, congratulations on being amazing and fantastic

We are in the same boat

My Change did come. I went from struggling in school 🏫🎒 to passing two tests and having two left to graduate. Not familiar with Sam Cooke but I love 💓 this song. He sang from his heart. This song helped to carry on when I thought I couldn't last. ❤
