  • Shoes tells the story of his scariest moment in a fighter when he ended up in a flat spin in an F-5. This is a clip from my two hour live interview with Shoes - former F-14 TOPGUN Instructor Pilot who also flew the F-5, A-4, 727, and MD-11. He was one of the pilots in the move THE FINAL COUNTDOWN. Hi new subscriber and big fan. I'm a former USAF enlisted man, and a GA CFII with only light piston airplane experience, but I have to tell you .....your TH-cam channel is incredible. I thoroughly enjoy watching the various military aviation pieces and jet aircraft accident reviews that you so graciously share with the public. Keep up the good work! Tom

I thought he was going to say someone recorded his spin years prior and he was about to get in trouble...
But he says his skipper did the exact same thing (which could have been prevented if his safety culture permitted him to tell his story)
Hopefully their safety culture changes or has changed and pilots don't have to worry about getting into trouble when reporting such a vital safety report as this would have been...damn....hope no one loses their life from this, 'cowboy/top gun' mentality...
Cool story though, another one on the books for MoOoOoOo-ver hahaha

He mentions before on the gear story better to die than look bad mentality. These were the pre politically correct work-hard play-hard hard core warriors.
Sounds like alot more black box, etc now. Had a buddy in the Marine who was enlisted and got a commission and went jets and said everything very closely monitored and quite strict.

The Final Countdown as some awesome footage of the F-14 and it was awesome to see this interview. My friends and I do the same if someone wrecks a patrol car...you will end up getting it documented in a diorama that will sit in the squad room for all to see and never forget.

    Love these stories CW.
Quote, "I had a lot more time to think about it (comparison to his skipper in the same spin situation but at a 'lot' lower altitude)" If I got this right, he had a mere four seconds more than his skipper when he saved his aircraft. Most people can't decide how much TP they need in that time after a good dump. I honestly think that is a fair comparison, because it's as close as to understanding how fast the thinking of a fighter pilot must be, well... in a dump situation so to speak.
Still, it's a very entertaining story for everyone.

DO: "Go have fun, it can’t hurt you"
Literally anyone who has ever flown an airplane: "That is emphatically not true."
The overarching lesson of every pilot training program is to show you every possible way the aircraft can and will hurt you. But anyway good luck inducing that inverted flat spin!

It happened the me the same altought it was on a training flight in a Bücker Jungmann. FIrst Immelman, not enough speed on top, then I saw the outdor pool field with thousend of people enjoying their sun & bath turning and turning in my center vision, head up in the inverted. I tought, NOT GOOD if I'm gonna crash inverted in the public below. The airplane was happy as well, falling like a leaf. Then my instructor recovered and said to me : DON'T DO THAT EVER AGAIN lol.

I remember Hall quoting a Navy officer saying the Navy/Top Gun F-5s had spin needles in them and the Air Force F-5s didn't. They could recover the Navy F-5s but without a spin indicator in their F-5s the USAF guys were SOL. (p. 74 of the George Hall Top Gun book, btw. Very good photography in it and unexpectedly informative about naval aviation history.)
The book also mentioned the fact there was some preference for the F-20 to replace the F-5 as the main adversary plane before the F-16N was basically forced on them. There really wasn't a choice. The F-20 was dead by mid-1985.

@4:12 If he had told the story to the rest of the guys, a year later with that knowledge, could the skipper have been able to recover? Did squadron/service/pilot culture contribute to this incident?

    • @ericssmith2014
      @ericssmith2014 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, it's sort of interesting - he was sent out with the suggestion to try it, and in the moment he apparently thought, “I guess I’m going to be a test pilot today,” yet he didn’t come back and say, “Hey, I gave it a shot, you really can’t recover without the rudder, eh? Should put that in bold.”

The last three countries bull fighting is still practiced: Spain, Mexico...and...France. Some trivia. By the way, I had no idea F-5s could operate over water. 😉 I guess they would frown on a splash down on a fam flight. Excellent story. Good thing Joker didn't see you break the hard-deck hahaha sorry can't help myself.
