Blue Peter celebrates 21 years (C) BBC 15/10/1979

A Royal Navy rescue Wessex helicopter from RNAS Culdrose lands in the horseshoe car park at BBC Television Centre. The helicopter is towwed into Studio 1, ahead of the broadcast. An award for outstanding endeavour is presented to Michael Brock of 771 squadron in relation to the fastnet rescue. A cake in the shape of the helicopter is cut up and served - celebrating the 21st birthday of Blue Peter.

That is THE most perfect piece of telly ever. From the days when you landed a Wessex in the car park - pushed it into TC1, minced about a bit with long hair, tight trousers, and awkward pauses. Had a marching band appear with a dog whilst pushing in a chopper shaped cake. None of yer fancy graphics and whizzy bang cameras in our day. Oh No! Then they set off the smoke detectors with the candles, wave a sword around in front of the dog, clamber on the table with a knife, announce the band are blowing and trail the letter E. Whats not to LOVE

If the helicopter had crashed in the car park, there would NOT be endless inquiries, demands for compensation etc from relatives.
If the incident had been broadcast live, you would not have shots of kids blubbering on the News later and parents saying they had PTSD. No, people would have just got on with things. We were a stronger people then.

I could never get into Blue Peter (grew up in the 70/80s). Always thought it was a show made for posh and intelligent kids, of which I was neither lol
