    I asked my grandfather who was born in 1906 when he was in his late 80s which innovation was the best in his life - he immediately replied the air conditioner!

    I’d argue that Willis Carrier was one of the greatest people to walk this earth.

    I'm born and raised in Miami Florida. My parents are from NY and NJ. They came down here in the early 70's and I was born. I have never lived without AC except when the power was out or the central AC broke down. When I was a kid in Miami we had a window unit in every room. Then in the mid 80's my parents bought a new house in Pembroke Pines which is a suburb of Ft Lauderdale. This was our first experience with "central air" and we have never lived without it except for the occasional break down. Even during hurricane power loss for weeks, I had a generator and a couple 5,000 BTU window units to make it bearable. It only takes 24 hours in a house with no AC and 85+ degrees and 90% humidity outside to NEVER want to deal with no AC again. So now at 50 years old, I still live in the Ft Lauderdale area in a house with central AC. But I have 2 window units and generators for when we lose power from a storm.

    Ahh, the sound of a good old air conditioner makes my day! Nothing beats the sound of those old reciprocating compressors!

    And we essentially still use his psychometric charts for the most part unchanged to this date.
    Also in case you are interested there’s a HUGE DEFICIT in HVAC service techs everywhere so if you want a career comparable to someone with a typical college education (minus the student loan debt) and one that will grow with your family, the HVAC industry is the way to go. It’s fun hard work and a fascinating use of the field of applied sciences.

    I remember is a kid in the hot Midwest summers, people sat out on the porches at night.
    A lot of people, including us, didn’t buy a window air conditioner until the late 60’s.
    We bought one used one to cool much of the house.
    As a kid, we spent much of our time outdoors, winter and summer. It was actually a healthier way to live, in general.
    Everywhere you went, you’d see people out on their porches in the summertime and hear kids playing outside.

    Air conditioning has certainly changed the world, houses no longer have porches were people sit in the evening. I remember as a small boy making a trip to California in the summertime from Texas. We drove at night and stopped every hundred miles or so to buy ice.

    Irony abounds. Air conditioning made us strong as a country, and it made us weak and reliant at the same time. And the thing that was making us cool inside is also making it hotter outside.

    • @JoshuasRecordings
      @JoshuasRecordings 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe, however the new refrigerants barley work compared to the old ones, plus the unit failing every two years is even worse. Old units rule (made before 1990).

    If I was from the early 1900s, this would've been the future novelty along with the model T car and electricity. Sadly I was born in the late 1990s, so the only novelty in my childhood life is the Apple iPad, iPhone and hydrogen FCX car and nano-electronics.

      He invented refrigeration units for trucks decades after Carrier's first AC unit.
      But the king of cool's work was extremely important and can stand on it's own merits.
      No one's stealing anyone's thunder.
