Well, there are 2 maps, the Wad holds 5 Maps. And Map 1 has like 18k monsters or something and Map 5 is the same map, with like 40k monsters. The music is different in both maps, and strangely enough, I saw Coin playing this map and saw by the kill count that it was Map 1 yet the music of Map 5 is playing, which I find weird, feels like some sort of clickbait. But then again, this song i still find the best Doom song in all Doom wad history till this day.

I remember when I saw Oku's Uv-max run of map 5 of this wad and it literally blew my mind. I spent a few days watching it because I understood how much grinding was behind it. It was pretty sad that he closed his channel after that, so I'm really glad you revisited this amazing wad. Thanks for all your videos, they are great!
You picked a great clip to start the video on. I too would have picked up the Invuln after seeing that boneyard of skele-boys! I am impressed at the mapper's kindness at splitting the map into four parts. Even in the mid-2000s a lot of people didn't have great computers, so a quality-of-life feature like that is appreciated.
I had seen a few vids for Okuplok and wanted a go myself. I spent 40 mins falling off the platform columns right at the start, before the imps. You make that part look like such a breeze it doesn't even register as a challenge in your video! lol
It's actually MAP5 of Holy Hell that you gotta play and finish really, but hey it's about time you did a play of this, it deserves way more credit than Okuplok
Scythe Level 19 has a great Perfect Dark track. Well technically it's two mixed together. But it's an absolute banger. It might be the same tune in the video actually
Okuplok Slaughter Map was made 6 or 7 years after HolyHell, that is after we seen some of the glorius sunder slaughter maps Holy Hell was made as a bit of a joke with the intention to be beatable and to have fun in slaughter style, only had plutonia's map 32 or SQUARES as inspiration in 2005/2006 (Plutonia 2 wasnt even made yet, this was the Scythe 1+2 era) Okuplok was made with the intention of it being (nearly) unbeatable and to f*ck the player up with genius room design, monster placement and very limited health pick ups. Im pointing this out because some "guys in the chat" seem a bit uncultured/confused and mention HolyHell is way easier, because.. yes.. it obviously is :)
I have really been enjoying your content, this video actually inspired me to figure out gzdoom and wads and start playing this map, my first map ever outside of the ID software releases. Some parts have been challenging to me, particularly the room with the blue and red lines and the room with the red skull, but I am really enjoying it. You made the map look easy for sure, it's proven a lot more difficult, but it certainly is increasing my skill level quite a bit along the way!
That was a fun watch to get through, having recently played this map myself some months back, after seeing at least a couple of playthroughs myself over the years. It's doable even for me, even if I have to be slower and save after every fight. I enjoyed seeing how you handled and reacted to what I knew was coming. Good stuff. 👌 GG.
I recognize some of the music at 2:00 It's from Perfect Dark. It's been DOOM MIDI-ified, but that's definitely from Perfect Dark. God, I love that game.
Good luck hunting down the first giga-slaughter map. Also, not sure if you're aware of 'Holy Hell Revealed' which is a remix of Holy Hell with 41557 monsters...
Man! This sure brings memories! I remember playing this mapset a lot several years ago in ZDoom! It was the ONLY non-vanilla WAD I used to play, and whenever I got into that fortification with the Hell Knights, I'd always end up surrounded by them and eventually murdereed (despite using the BFG) Why it doesn't have the creepy OG music???
this map is great, it taught me that I had to incorporate infighting and that trying to run it with brutal doom mod is not going to work even with a good computer, I think I finished it once with millions of saves after abandoning it for years back in the day due to computer lag (probly still used idkfa for some bits cant remember), its surprisingly memorable
Watching the big video in pieces and will potentially make multiple comments. Holy Hell is the first (and only ) Giga-Slaughter map that I beat (almost 100% but I missed some monsters here and there and didn't bother going back to look for them). I'm glad you played it. Don't know if this gets addressed in a later part of the video (I'm 3 hours in), but I would definitely watch a UV-max Holy Hell Speedrun. I think Okuplok's run was about 3 hours, maybe 2:50. It's been a long time since I saw it on TH-cam. So I think you can beat that time... maybe. IDK. Would definitely watch it though.
I've only ever "finished" this map with Russian Overkill. It's a helluva grind, even when you're totally OP. I enjoy it a lot. Even Okuplok with RO is extremely difficult. This one though, feels like a nice fun time.
Nice, i remember playing this map years ago. Maybe for the last 2 fights the way is to trigger them straight after another and let infighting kill the arch-viles and soften up the Cybers for less of a grind
That's what I do. Rush straight for the last switch after unleashing the archviles and stay right next to an invulnerability sphere until the cybers arrive, then grab it and take the lift on one side up to the top to hide for a bit if needed, or just stay below and focus entirely on the cybers. With four invulnerabilities in total, often the archviles will all die without you needing to engage with them at all.
About map splits, it looks like they kept the whole map in all MAP01 - MAP04, but they added extra exit lines on random sections and de-populated all the "Unused" sections of monsters.
6:01:36... 1000 monsters remaining out of 20000... and the video still should last for 1:45 out of 7:45.... we can't help thinking "pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!!! yes! apparently you should save!"
One of my first doom wads I ever played and I still return to it sometimes. You may have heard there is another wad called "holy hell revealed". Do not waste your time on that garbage. It takes this map and copy pastes horribly designed rooms filled with demons for no other reason than to increase monster count. It massacres this maps music, level design, pacing and everything good.

Oh, Kyrandia... the first game's design is honestly kinda bad (atmosphere is nice, though, especially with Frank Klepacki's music on top of the pretty pixel art), but the second game was MUCH better. The post-Volcania part feels a little rushed (flies by a bit too quickly, each location doesn't have much stuff, although what IS there is generally pretty great except for the indigo potion puzzle and the hanoi bullshit near the very end), but overall it was really good and DAMN the first half has some really impressive stuff, especially in regards to how many alternates the game supports. Many know you can get crocodile tears in more than one way, but did you know that instead of grabbing hot water from the sulfur springs, you can take regular from the cauldron, heat it up on Herb's candle, and that WORKS? (And the lock to the tavern has more than one solution, too. A lot of things in the first few areas have alternate solutions, actually.) RE Holy Hell, that ending with 100 cyberdemons... well, it was great watching you do it, but damn, it just looks like straight nonsense. The game waits a hell of a long time before they appear, too, so achieving infighting seems next to impossible and probably not intended -- the mapper seems to have really, actually decided that forcing people to grind down all these cybers was a good idea. Fascinatingly terrible decision. (And it looks like they really love verticality that's better in terms of looks than in terms of fight design.) Definitely a DOOM history milestone, but goddamn they went overboard in some really unneeded ways.
