Great interview, Sandy. Two good boys, John and Mick. I enjoyed it. It is a pity that you didn't ask further about the singer of "Sugar Baby Love" in 1973, because the only singers were Paul da Vinci (Paul Prewer) and John Richardson (drummer, backing vocals and speaking). So also the first record (with both sides Sugar Baby Love/You could have told me) were sung by Paul da Vinci. Paul left for a few british pounds before The Rubettes were founded.
More importantly, on TOTP Alan Williams actually sang the song and it was his face and presentation that really was the key to the whole success. The original session singer didn't want to front the band so it was his decision - and his loss.
Thats right Paul Da vinci did sing on the original song but when Allan Williams joined the band he we t into the recording studio and recorded Sugar Baby love himself , so by the time it was on Top of the Pops it was Allan Williams miming to his own recording , I prefer Allan Williams anyway , he dosnt get the recognition he deserves .
Why did they never mention Alan's name once?? 😮 Wasn't he the one who sang most of the songs?? Were they friends with Alan then? And I know Alan could sing Sugar baby love.. Heard it several times,,❤
@@sandykaye5865 Quis dizer todos os The Rubettes juntos com Alan, Thorpe, Mick, Peter e Jonh. Did you understend? I remember that , Alan foi.o que sempre esteve na banda ,antes da separação. Ok? I Love them
Shame Sandy never asked them about their country album ‘Sometime in Oldchurch ‘ in my opinion one of their best albums ever and the title track is brilliant
what a pity I didn't know about this Mike! I certainly would've asked them. Perhaps I could revisit and have another chat with them next year. And you might like to join me on the line? Where are you based? If interested, send me an email to sandy@abreathoffreshair.com.au and we could sort.
This I just watched also proves that Alan did do the intro to 'SBL', which is great to scotch those rumours th-cam.com/video/hjTT2GJuHmQ/w-d-xo.html Ahhh, dear John- I still have a copy of 'Celtic Drums' and some of the later album songs that Rubettes did are still faves all these years later ('Dark Side of the World' You're the Reason Why' and 'Sign of the Times') xxx
during some times , it was many years before 80'..media france have said the rubettes can take a place as group as the beatles , and many in hit parad, .... very best group rock and songs during many years , ... (maybe remplace particulary in the song "you re the reason why" ....thanks for this interviews, sorry i am not english my english is not perfect
thank you so much for taking the time to comment on this interview. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I think the Rubettes are fabulous too and no need to be sorry about your english - it is very good! What country are you in?
There's a whole lot of information, history and names deliberately missing here, like something never existed. No mention of the fact that there has been four versions of the band (line up) under the same name in the past couple of decades. In July this year (before this interview??), a London High Court judge ruled in favour of Alan Williams owning the name 'The Rubettes'. I believe from that, Mick Clark and John Richardson can no longer legally represent themselves as The Rubettes. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.
its interesting that british music was by far the best and most dominant in europe i at that time as the standard in most countries was fairly poor. most kids in europe listened to british and american music as it was far superior than their own .it also made a mockery of the eurovision song contest that it almost had to be manipulated vote wise to ensure that other countries got a chance of winning as britain was miles ahead music wise than anyone else
couldn't agree more John. Thanks for checking this interview out. You may also like to take a listen to some of my others that you'll find on the website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au
It's great to hear the boys talking about how the Rubettes got started. John was enjoying telling the story. ❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This band were one of those that made my childhood a happy place
Thanks John and Mick. Nice to hear those storys. There's always something I didn't know, although I am a Rubettes fan from the beginning.

Brilliant guitarist. Loved his single 'Baby I know' @@Andrew-d7q
