Shadows or Ventures, no matter who you are picking, both have their own followers Worldwide. Just listen & enjoy to both great instrumental groups should made us all happy and contended. Worry about who is better is a waste of your time.
Different styles. Both great instrumental bands. Glad I grew up in 😅that era.
The numbers tell the story. The Ventures always get left off the lists, but they have sold 110 million albums worldwide. That's more than Metellica or The Rolling Stones! Pretty amazing for an instrumental group.
The Ventures are uniquely American in sound. One of a kind and instantly recognizable. The Shadows kinda blended in with the other European instrumental bands like The Jokers and The Spotniks and none of those band experienced the worldwide success of The Ventures, especially in Japan where they out sold The Beatles 2 to 1. While the Euro bands were fine players, The Ventures stood out in musicianship, influencing a long list of the worlds top players.
They both were great instrumental bands in their own unique way.
Both are equally good with their distinct and different styles.
Definitely The Shadows. They are the best enstrümental group in the world ❤🎸
You've just got to look at their track records The Ventures although a good group didn't have any where near as many hits as The Shadows or have a movie career so for my money Shadows Rule 🎸🎸🎸

Both are having different style in entertaining the millions of their audience.
I have been a diehard fan of the Great ventures cos their instrumentals hits were prompt us to learn guitar for the music lovers.They proved good in surfing non stop medleys of good.Ventures gave us good rocking hits always fast in bassist nos.
But Shadows also gave us wonderful dancing hits.Most of the vocal hits came out in different version by Shadows. No modern groups ever can replace these 60' era group.
Hank Marvin has influenced so many great guitarist, and how many kids has picked up a guitar because of him. In short, the most influential guitarist on the planet!!!!

I'm a fan of both of these great groups. Walk Don't Run and Apache . Both fantastic HITS.
I appreciate both of their music . The shadows enlightened me to learn playing guitar thus enriching my life . The shadows seems more creative in composing songs like ' Theme for young lovers , wonderful land ' and I feel that Bruce Welch is also talented in singing .
Both Great Bands. I learned guitar rythmn and leads from the Ventures, but I learned style and tone techniques from the shadows.

Both groups are extraordinary musicians of unique style! Shadows made more melodious songs and Ventures made fast guitar beats songs and both attracted crores of instrumental music lovers with their unique talents! It's impossible to award first rank among both.

I listen to both coz The Ventures was my elder siblings' favourite while I grew up with The Shadows and obviously, Cliff Richard!
The ventures' Musics were always favorite all over the world because the ventures are evergreen and often considered as icons of 60's music industry.
I love them both, they play in their own special way.

Just like Apple and Orange, which one is better? It depends on your own taste, I liked both, The Shadows and The Ventures.......both are the best!.....

proved The Ventures, The Best.
I’ve been a shadows fan since I was 7 , Apache being the first tune by them I heard, later on I found the ventures and I also like them , very talented guitarists with a unique style of playing instrumentals and show themes

Well, as I had not heard of the Ventures till now (& I am nearly 64!) I would say the Shadows.
Die kann man doch gar nicht vergleichen. Sie hatten zwei völlig verschiedene Stile. Betamusik (Shadows) und Surfmusik (Ventures). Ich liebe beide. | You can't compare them at all. They had two completely different styles. Beat music (Shadows) and surf music (Ventures). I love them both.
The Ventures' style of music purely caters to rock n roll while The Shadows' is more melodic and gentle, so I'm picking The Shadows to The Ventures'.

I love them both. The Ventures sounded best in 60's with that clean twangy honky tonky tone. 50 years ago when I was young, I played Ventures tunes mostly. But now I love to play Shadows songs more.
As a beginning guitarist trying to learn the songs the tabs for the Ventures are easier than the ones for the Shadows. So the Shadows play more notes all over the fret board which takes a lot of skill. That being said, I love them both, they are pioneers and they still have new fans every time they play their recordings. I have never met anyone that doesn’t like them. That can’t be said about the Beetles or any other band .
I love both of these fantastic guitar groups, they are both the very best.
But....each group plays a certain song better than the other.
I love the Ventures' Perfidia and Walk Don't Run versions better than the Shadows' versions.
I prefer the Shadows' Apache version.....no other group does it better.
These two groups will always be in my heart..... I love them both.
Hank is deffo the tightess player, takes you to another level. Both groups are wonderful
Reading the comments below takes me back to the boy hood years "my dad is stronger than yours.." I have been fortune to listen to both of the bands since i was a young boy, and I still do, that´s my privilege.

How hard is this question ! On any one day I could say The Shadows then the next day say The Ventures ! Both these groups have great musicians, and song writers. Hank Marvin from the Shadows guitar work is outstanding ! Gerry McGee and Nockie Edward lead guitar work is exceptional ! Both bands have world class drummers. Question is to hard, just enjoy their music !

The question is unthinkable. It is a matter of musical taste. I learned to play the guitar in the 60s, among others, by listening to both groups. At that time I preferred The Shadows, for the particular and evocative melodic and poignant touch of Hank Marvin. Today, having matured musically, I think I also appreciate the decidedly rocker sound of The Ventures.
My two cent opinion is this: I LOVE the Ventures, and the Shadows. In play, I would say the Ventures know their bread is buttered with Surf music and so they try to stay faithful to that sound at all times. The Shadows prefer to play their own sound and it just happens to sound surf.

Enjoy both, they are the inspiration of a budding musical culture on opposite sides of the world and they bring back wonderful memories for me from when I grew up at the tip of Africa in Cape Town.
The shadows have a nice clean sound, the ventures sounded like they where recording behind a large pillow, very muffled, the shadows played with more professionalism
just listen to the SHADOWS playing the QUATERMASTERS STORES b side to . APACHE i think i rest my case the SHADOWS were outstanding as was HANK B MARVIN . the VENTURES were more surf . .the SHADOWS wrote there own stuff also .

I love both the bands with the Ventures being my earlier favourite. Nowadays I listen to both the bands’ tunes.
It is really stupid to measure wich one is better, both are wonderful, the Shadows plays very elegant, clean and cultivated and hank with a pick, the Ventures plays with elementary power, really energetic involving lots of styles and never give up playing. Nokie played with fingerpicking and with soul and feeling that noone could be compared. Anyhow now you can hear Vladan with the same engagement, soulful and understanding. THE SHADOWS. Apart from the instrumentals, they could write and sing as well as most vocal groups... better than some. The Shadows were in a league of their own and led the way for the first four or five years of the 1960s. Although their record sales took a bit of a drop in the 1970s, their creativity was at its peak between 1970 and 1980 and they were producing records that the Ventures would never have been capable of. So it's the Shads all the way!

This are my favorite instrumental Rock groups; both are awesome and have their own style, I couln't say wich is best.
This is a very difficult question to answer. Both are good and they are professionals. They have been entertaining for years and I still listen to both the bands. They have their own style of playing. These players are already old and they may go away one by one but their music will last forever and will be communicating with the future generations with their hits.
Now that all the family members of the Shadows have posted, my favorite was and is still the Ventures. Although I also like the Shadows. I grew up with the Ventures. Several big hits here in the USA. I took up bass thanks to listening to the Ventures.
And now the ventures family members turn.

Let’s look at it from a practical standpoint, which band is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and which one, as well as their excellent guitarist should be? I am happy The Ventures are in the RRHoF but couldn’t they have inducted Hank Marvin and The Shadows before such other notable rockers Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, (who didn’t want it) and Willie Nelson after they ran out of other great rock and roll musicians? They’re both great just different styles of the same genre. How can you compare great with great?
Without any shadow of doubt The Ventures is the greatest all over the world. The Ventures is increasing in popularity with every new generation of fans. The Ventures is legendary.
THE SHADOWS ARE THE LEGENDS OVER HERE. HANK B MARVIN . VENTURES dont sell here . SHADOWS 5TH BEST SELLING GROUP OF ALL TIME IN THE UK . VENTURES managed one chart single here . and the SHADOWS wrote many hits .
No contest - Hanks tone and the overall Shadows sound is in a higher class than the Ventures.
@@modeltrainstipsandtutorials yeh, but the ventures used effects but just what was already in the amplifier… Nokie created alot of those effects himself just with his unique ability… he never needed that echo plex type special amp that Hank used

You cannot really compare them both totally different and both excellent Hank Marvin master of whammy bar , Nokia Edwards Finger picker and a master and his own right

Ventures played Calif Surf Music with a fuzzy sound,
Shadows were like an orchestra guitars instead of horns , a different style
The first instrumental I remember truly liking was Telstar,
They played it a lot at the skating rink
Both are legends, The Shadows mainly played sweet music & The Ventures music is mostly fast and lively , hence impossible to compare.

It´s depends! ..... How many years old are you?! ..... 60s generation liked Ventures if they live in USA ..... Europe liked Shadows .... Shadows always played a more sweet sound, more soft .... Ventures sound were with more punch, more "agressive sound" .... Shadows used Vox amplifier and Ventures Fender, diferent equipment, nice sound for each case .... so, anyway I like a lot!!! .... BOTH ... .... and also I play BOTH ....
No, not apples and oranges. These two groups cannot be compared, just because The Shadows are vastly superior. The Ventures enjoyed (and still enjoying) the benefits of a larger economy and the dominance of the US worldwide. Most (if not all) of the numerous top 20 hits of The Shadows are originals, composed by themselves. The Ventures, however, played and recorded covers. On the other hand, how come Mel Taylor beats Brian Bennett, and Bob Bogle or Nokie Edwards beats Hank Marvin? Bennett and Marvin are the grand masters, icons, influencers.
The shadows for me are magic....i grew up in the 60s...wow what a time for music... i am 75 now.....the kids today dont know what they are missing...going to all those dances and meeting girls there will never be another time like it!........

I could listen to both all day but I think The Ventures were much more 'upbeat' and more exciting to listen to. Much faster tempo.

For me The Shadows have an edge over The Ventures but both have been my favourites since the 1960s.
No such thing as who's better. Competition is not the point. Both play their styles of music perfectly. It is more accurate to ask where did you live during the period.

Both groups are equally good..The Shadows are more popular than the Ventures..The Shadows were 60s with Cliff Richard as a back up musicians..Here in Malaysia...people know Cliff Richard & the Shadows in 18/7 on airwaves in 60s everyday....The Ventures only heard in early 70s period on airwave...Thanks & thumb up👍....

The influence of The Shadows was bigger. The bands line-up: leadguitar, rhytmguitar, bassguitar and drums paved the way for The Beatles and the British invasion. Both Mark Knopfler and Brian May admitted they were inspired by Hank Marvin. For what concerns the music of The Shadows and The Ventures; that depends on your personal preference.
