Peering through the glass doors, she saw him standing in the shadows, phone pressed to his ear, his voice low but urgent. “You know I can’t just leave,” he hissed, his back to her. “I’ll see you soon, I promise.” Victoria’s breath caught. The tenderness in his tone, the way he spoke in a hushed, almost coaxing manner-it wasn’t business. It was something else, something intimate. Before she could stop herself, she pushed the door open slightly. “Charles?” He turned sharply, his expression briefly flashing with something akin to guilt before it smoothed into a neutral smile. “Just work,” he said quickly, tucking his phone into his pocket. “Nothing to worry about.” Victoria nodded slowly, but as he led her back inside, hand resting at the small of her back, she couldn’t shake the sinking feeling in her chest.
