  • Another Breja Tone Works video this time with a Birdseye Maple - Epiphone Les Paul and a set of SPH-90 pickups from Seymour Duncan. These pickups give you the sound of a P90 all in a standard HB size pickup. The first half of the video demos the pickups without any effects except for an OD and the second half (3:16) shows them on various songs. Thanks for watching and look for more demos.

    This is one of the best review vidoes I have ever seen. Just tone after tone with an easy to see what I am hearing. No 20 minute talk about seeing a p90 in a shop window.

    Your method of showing guitar pickups should be a standard everyone should use. Amazing work and great channel you got here. I've been learning a lot on your diagrams and wiring videos, keep up the excellent work!

      I agree with the first sentence 100%. Most who demo stuff play with heavy distortion and don't make it musical. One never gets a real sense of what the pickup or guitar sounds like in a normal setting.

    I appreciate the way you clearly show what combination of elements (pickups, effects, etc.) are in place with each change of tone, and that your excerpts are short enough that I can mentally compare the different ones. Excellent format. Thank you.

    Honestly, I don't use any boost pedal unless I want to OD the amp a bit. I try to deal with the output by adjusting the height of the pickups. In this case - the Neck pup is set at the recommended height and personally I don't find it too muddy or dark. Could just be my ears. I like to have a mellow tone from the neck for leads and do rhythm and such via the bridge or Neck/Bridge combined - Think Boston type leads. Thanks for watching and best of luck. Also - good capacitors are critical.

    Glad you liked the video...
    The amp for this demo is a modded MOD-102 DIY amp. It was my first Tube Amp build and only 5 watts but I replaced some caps and resistors to improve the tone. In some of my other videos I'm playing through a 5F3 that I also built. This one takes pedals very nice and has pretty good headroom for a 5 Watt. It's basically a tweaked Marshall Class A circuit.

      Learning in the 70s was a good 3-4 hours of picking up the needle 100 times to get a part right. How many guitar teachers were available to show us how to play a tune note for note? Tab?

    Also - I have another video coming where I have an original 25 year old SD JB and a SD Jazz. Those two go great together and they are a popular combo. I have demo out here of a Epi Sheraton with Gibson T-Buckers from the 70's and although they're are somewhat unrealistic for people to find - they do show some other cool options for ES-335 style guitars. FYI - For my Noise Gate I use a MXR Noise Clamp. it works great.

    As long as you have a pickguard with a Humbucker cut out you should be good to go - it's the same size. I don't think you can pull off the cover though so it might look a bit weird in there but you can do it. Before you do though, check out the video I did for the Manlius SP-90 pickups. They're P-90 style pickups (like the Phat-Cats) but in a single coil shell - you can retail the S/S/S look if that's what you want. They're really nice pickups.

    To be honest - I do use an MXR Noise Clamp when I'm recording or playing out so I kinda don't have an issue with it but when I run them without it - I'm not bothered by anything. I shield the cavities, use higher end wiring and watch for groundloops and don't have any noise issues. I'm also not doing High Gain though - so I can't speak to how noisey they might be in that case, but I haven't encountered anything unmanageable to that might make me reconsider putting them in.

    I have a demo of the JAZZ on my site so take a look. It's a fairly thick-sounding pickup but that's kinda subjective. Normally I try to use custom wound pickups in my guitars but I've had good luck with SD-stuff. Check out my Manlius Pickup demo and maybe you'll like that neck pickup. I just picked up a Blacktop Strat and the bridge pickup is really good but the neck - not so much so I'm toying with a SD-Pearly Gates for the neck. Not sure yet. Neck pickups are tough for me to appreciate.

    There is a neck Phat-Cat. The neck is a little 'thicker' in tone - same physical size though. So are you making a HSH? Are you keeping the standard 5-way switch? If so - you could simply solder the new pups exactly like your current ones. $15 for an iron and you could for sure do it yourself. If you want a cool MOD, add a toggle or small push-pull so that you could add the other 2 pickup combos to your normal 5. All three pickups together or Bridge and Neck (like a Les Paul)

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BarrettK1ng I think they do. If I really wanted to improve that capability, I'd add a treble bleed on these to help retain a little of the high end when rolling down the vol. They do get softer and clean up with you roll it down - they just get a little darker than my taste. Having as many guitars as I do though - if I want clean, I switch guitars. No practical but it's what I do.

  • @kintrap5376
    @kintrap5376 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I have a les paul junior, if I got one of these, would it sound just like when you play the bridge only? Or what if I put a neck pickup in the bridge position? What would that be like

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally the pickup manufactures build their pickups for specific positions. In theory you could put a neck pickup in a bridge position and vise versa but depending on the output of those pickups it might not sound the best. You're better off buying the correct pickup for the position you want it in.

    You should check out my video with the Manlius PAF Pickups. I have them in a modified Epiphone Plus-Top Les Paul. Personally I think they sound better than the SD models. A good set of Pots, Cloth Wiring and good Capacitors are needed but damn - they sound great. These Phat-Cats are nice sounding too - obviously just a bit brighter. One of my guitars is a 73' SG which is all Mahogony so I know there's a definate difference in the sound of that versus the maple top. Best of luck to ya...

  • @thorpypoo
    @thorpypoo 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sounds great. Now if I could just find a sample of how these sound in an all Mahogany LP Studio with a rosewood fretboard I could make a decision between these and the Duncan Antiquity, Duncan 59, Duncan Pearly Gates (What I am leaning toward at the moment), or the Gibson BB Pro with some 2012 Standard Electronics to go along with it. How I wish they had made my guitar with a maple top!!! and Why did they ever abandon the original PAF for 498 and 490 pickups!!!! They don't suck, not great.

  • @valdivia19

    Hi friend, I´m thinking about buying this pickup, (sph-90) in the neck position. My question is, does it sound like a single coil? I want to combine both, P-90 in neck position and humbucker in bridge position in order to have two different types of sounds.
    I wait for your help!

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      GuitarGear Hey there... It sounds more like a SC with a bit more gain to it. Lot's of guys do the combo that you're after and they seem to like it. Your normal SC will come in around 6.4k and these are more in the 8K range so more output so a little more breakup. Nice crunchy tone.

  • @NickSelfridge
    @NickSelfridge 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is one of the hottest pickups I've ever heard is your epiphone les paul a standard les paul or is is it something else? If it's a les paul standard I have the same one in ebony. Are these pickups still good with the standard wiring configuration? Because I'm planning on getting some type of p90 pickup for it

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not an normal LP Standard nor a PlusTop. This is a rarer Epiphone LP Standard with a BirdsEye Maple top that was out only for a little while. I love both my Epiphone Les Pauls. Nothing against Gibson Les Pauls - it's just when you have a quest for a wall of guitars (I'm up to 20) like me and you mod the hell out of them once you get them - spending $1.5K+ for a guitar doesn't make sense. This whole setup (including guitar) cost me about $450 to do. To your other question - these pickups will work perfectly fine with either the modern or vintage wiring scheme.

    Hey great demo vid - nice work! A while ago, I installed a Phat Cat in the neck position of my Hagstrom Viking (ES 335 style) and a SD JB humbuggy in the bridge. I love the JB, but find the Phat Cat a bit dark and low output in comparison. Sometimes the output gets swallowed up by my noise gate altogether. Wondering if you find yourself needing to treble boost and or clean-boost on the neck at all to get more... oomph... ? Anyway, your vid got me excited to rediscover the Phat Cat - so thanks!

  • @sammoon6046
    @sammoon6046 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice demo man. Looks like the editing took a lot of work! Best p-90 demo out there.
    Are joyo pedals good? You seem to use a variety of them. How close is the sound of a p-90 to a tele bridge pickup? From what i understand, the tele bridge pickup is just a thicker wound single coil, much like a p-90. Sorry for the 20 Q's game lol

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sam Moon Hey Sam... Joyo Pedals. Yes - I have a bunch and use them from time to time. To be honest - some of them sound good but the quality of the pedals themselves is suspect. I've had several that just sound like something's blown all of a sudden. I have two of their AC-TONE pedals and one just died for no reason. It worked when I pulled it off my board and put it back in it's box. I pulled it out and noise all over the place. Put the other one in its place and everything's fine. I really like their Ultimate Drive - a lot like the OCD and I use their AC-Tone simply to augment my amp's EQ. I thought their Vintage OD was good until I bought my Big Llyod F-6 - there's no looking back. They're good pedals for the price if you're looking to experiment and not spend a ton. I'm just concerned over their reliability.
      As far as the P90 - I personally think it's much beefier than a SC. Much more grit right from the get-go. Unless you have some overwound Tele pickups, I don't think you'll match the grittiness and 'balls' of the P90. I just finished building a Tele/Strat/Jaguar bastard guitar with full-size P90's and man - they frickin' rock. I've got a good Noise gate pedal and would recommend one though even with the Phat-Cats as they do pump out some hiss and noise when driven.
      Don

      All depends on if your Jaguar is routed for Humbuckers. I've never opened one up so I can't be sure of what the route looks like. As long as it's an open swimming pool route or one for HBs, you're good to go. Probably have to get a new pickguard too.

    great demo. how would they compare to HS filtertrons? I'm looking for punchy bright pups, but I worry these phat cats being single coil will generate noise with fuzzboxes and distortions.

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure on the Filtertrons but I do have a pair of JV Jones Classics in a different guitar and I guess it all depends on what you're after. The JV Jones sound more 'Gretsch-like'. The Phat-Cats do produce some noise but I use a MXR Noise Clap pedal and they're fine with OD and Fuzz on - no different than my LPs or Strats. Don

      Probably the Gretsch but that's just my opinion based on the PhatCat's being able to break up . I don't think you want that on a 12-string so the Gretsch would work better in that case.

    • @BrejaToneWorks
      @BrejaToneWorks  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Robbie Height These are like regular P90s so they're like Single Coil pickups with a lot of attitude. That's a different sound the Humbuckers though - keep that in mind. You will be able to play those bands but you might have to adjust your amp or pedal to get a meatier sound. Also - since they are 'single coils', you will get some additional noise with gain unlike Humbuckers so prepare accordingly. This demo uses 500K with .033uF paper-in-oil caps. The 300K will tame these down a bit in terms of brightness but it should still sound good. My only concern for you would be the overall tone of these will be less heavy than Humbuckers so they may not totally suit your ears for certain rock/metal styles. I have 3 SGs and in my most recent one I put a set of replica T-Tops to cover the style of music you asked for and they do it very very well. Don't get me wrong - the PhatCats are awesome pickups and like I said have a great raw attitude to them. Hope this helps in some way. Happy Modding... Don

      +Breja ToneWorks Thanks Don, I wonder what setup Tony Iommi used in the early days of Sabbath with his P90 SG to give him such a booming tone ? It seems almost like P90's vary in tone pickup by pickup more so than humbuckers or Strat or Tele type single coils.

      +Robbie Height Depends on the track. He did have a P90 in his main SG in the beginning. He also had traditional HBs in other ones he used.

      If you listen to "Paranoid" it sounds like he is using both on two different guitars.

    Was the track in the intro recorded with that guitar?

      Yes - the lead track(s) on all my Pickup Demos are done with the guitar and pickups shown.

    Do they produce a lot of hum on classic rock amounts of gain?

      Nothing that's not manageable... I personally use a MXR Noise Clamp to deal with any hum or stray noise. If I turn it off I get some from these but it's very controllable.

    How much resistance do the pots in that guitar have?

      BarrettK1ng Hey there... Sorry for the delay. I used 500K pots in this guitar.

    What's your review on the Mxr noise clamp?

      I love the pedal. Other than it's odd jack placement (personal pet-peeve here) it's perfect for my setup. Easy as hell to use and works perfectly. In my studio it isn't as needed but live it's great.

      Great I'm wondering cause I heard many mixed reviews on it and from what I heard in your demo it works well with eliminating hum

      I will tell you though that fine-tuning it if you play a a lot of 'longer hangin type phrases' might be a bit more tricky to find they right time for the cut off. I guess that would be the only thing to worry about - but otherwise I personally I have a 'sweet-spot' for my type of playing and I set it and forget it. The pedal is always on.
