- Alan Lee first read The Lord of the Rings when he was 17. He was immediately captured by J.R.R Tolkien's imagination.
Decades later, he was recruited by Peter Jackson to design the sets he had pictured all those years ago.
Watch to learn more about his captivating artistic method, and what inspired him to create such lush fantastical environments.
Without Alan and John, we would not really know what Middle-Earth would look like!
I have no words to describe the feelings I am getting from this video and the works of Tolkien.
It is just magical.
This man has the voice of an angel and the artwork of a god. During my High School days I suffered from insomnia until one night I discovered his commentary on his art in the RotK extended edition. I got to see amazing art and listen to great commentary until eventually drifting off into a pleasant sleep and sleepwalking myself to bed.
Good times.

I'm glad you don't have insomnia anymore! :)
This was amazing. I love Alan's voice, it makes me all sleepy and peaceful :)
Me too
I thought I was the only one!!! I adore him and his compelling voice. Currently finding more videos just go listen to him speak :)
I used to listen to him on the dvd extras of the movies way back before there was an asmr community. Those were the days when I thought I was the only one who enjoyed this sort of thing.
That's brilliant, I did that too! It was so nice to discover the asmr community on TH-cam

This great artist seems so nice, and gentle, really pleasant to listen to!
Beautiful drawing...❤❤
This is the concept art that I miss! We have become too digital but this type of art has a "Soul".
the medium is not the art. im sure there were painters that said pencil drawings have no soul, after they were invented. tired of people ripping on digital artists, who very much can put as much 'soul' into their stuff as any other medium.
I bet the cavemen, too, complained about paintbrushes and said “it’s too complicated, it lacks soul, let’s keep fingerpainting on the cave walls”
this video made me cry, i love him.
I love his art. I love hos voice. I love this man!
Such an inspiration, right now I'm on the 4th year of my architecture degree, and I'm still perplexed if this is going to be life ahead, and I always remind myself of the life I had before stepping into architecture wherein I would do fantasy stuff for I was heavily influenced by historical, fantasy, sci-fi, and RPG video games (especially LOTR I was like 5 or 6 when the movie came out) and stuff, and architecture is mostly on innovation, and the realities of this world whereas I love to day-dream, and lately I'm lost but going through the works of John Howe, and Alan Lee I think I have found a new direction if I really can't pursue an architectural career in the future, rather integrate all my learnings into what I used to do when I was a kid, illustrating the fantasies, and dreams.
Same! I hope you are enjoying your degree still though :)
I hope your dream came true
Grow up
Oh, what he's doing for a living is like a dream job! 😍
I love this guy. I love his work and his personality. The first time I saw the documentary on the Lord of the Rings I fell in love with his voice. I'd put it in the evening and go to bed in a sleepy bliss, dreaming of ancient heroes and fairies.
Beautiful artwork. Thank you Alan
So inspiring, I've always loved his illustrations!
Alan Lee is legend...
Out of anyone that has ever illustrated The Lord of the Rings, he is my favorite. His art has this nice soft, light look to it.
Odd, I find much of his work to be cold and bland. No accounting for taste I guess.
I love his design of Mordor and the Haradrim
Awesome!!! Very inspiring.
Wonderful man
so beautiful
Lord of the Ring, the best movie Fantasy, Collosal, and adventure.
i think so
Alot of LOTR's beauty is directly from his art.
it is amazing!
i wanna draw fantasy now lol

Great stuff man !
merOObservador scam
John Howe and Ted Nasmith don’t come close to this artwork. For me, Alan’s visual interpretation IS Middle-Earth
Damn China is getting all the quality content
ASMR crack

2:31 Putin?
I bet he got enough money from illustrating the movie that he can fix his teeth now!!
Go and leave your retarded comments on another video, troll.
Why does his teeth concern you? When you can look at his incredible art.
Can any one tell me about what is the drawing paper grade and pencil grade those artist use for drawing? please
For pencils I think he uses Staedtler Mars Lumograph drawing pencils, which are super easy to get ahold of. Not sure of the paper and not sure if you still care three years later lol.
