    Get under the car and whack the starter with a hammer. Then try it. Real scientific like. If it's a deadspot in the starter it might work.

      I agreee.. its more than likely a combination of the battery and starter.. but a starter is super cheap for those old motors... prolly like 40 bucks... best bet is starter.. but do it all.. starter, cables and you already did the battery so youre good.... good luck

    SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT AND MATT READ THIS HERE IS A FAIRLY EASY WAY TO FIND THE PARASITIC DRAW/LOSS!!!!!!!! You should always but the battery disconnect on the positive side. You have a parasitic draw because something is grounding out through one of the positive wires. (that could be anywhere in the electrical system from your horn to the cigarette lighter. This is how you easily test for a parasitic draw. Take the negative battery cable off the battery. Put your multimeter to amps. Now put your negative multimeter lead to the Negative battery cable. Then put the positive lead to the negative battery cable. You should have less than .5 milliamps. If you have more than that. That confirms you have a draw (because something is grounding out in the system) Now start pulling fuses. Once the numbers drop off the multimeter you at least know what circuit to deal with. Then go from there. Make sure when you do this your key is turned off and your doors are shut (otherwise your dome light might be on). Fix the problem not put a band-aid on. Knowing you. Im sure you are doing this until you get a chance to fix the problem.

      I think your overlooking the fact he fitted a new battery. I doubt the battery drained that quickly from a drain. It sounds like a starter motor fault. Could also be the Killswitch Matt fitted, contacts within may not be rated high enough resulting in voltage drop to the starter motor. These are all opinions but a simple diagnostic with a multimeter would solve it.

    Matt, Smack your starter with a hammer or rench or a pipe something hard several times then try it again. Check you vehicle ground connections and make sure they are clean as possible. Cut off old ends and check for corrosion and use copper lugs on all ends for best connectivity.

      That would make it to were you would have to replace it sooner if you hit it and crack one of the magnets in it makes two new poles and that could mess with the starter making it so that it draws more volts because the load is higher now

      There's no way for the battery to drain with the negative isolated. Also reduces the chance of a battery short if something connected the positive to the body i.e ground. Matt done it correctly. It's a starter motor issue.

    Matt, couple tips for ya. 1- before starting the Monte Carlo; push the gas pedal to the floor one time. Then turn the key. It sets the flap on top of the carb (which you can adjust on the side) that is your choke. 2rd- the battery cable going to the starter should have a fire retardant wire insulation on it. Like you said; it is close to the exhaust and heat will cut back your voltage to the starter. Good luck with your car. Love old cars myself and like tinkering with them.

    First, I would have someone tap on the starter with a hammer while you're trying to start it. This trick used to save me all the time with my old Bronco. Could also be the starter solenoid. Cables should probably be replaced too.

    Hey Matt, I had a problem with this on an old truck I had. Because it’s not turning over, I would check:
    A. Clutch sensor (mine popped off once) easiest fix.
    B. Try contacting the positive and negative on the starter solenoid with a screwdriver. (If it starts then, it’s not your starter)
    C. Starter maybe?
    D. Last resort go for the wiring. It’ll be the longest/hardest job that may not even work in the end.
    Most likely not an alternator issue because the battery was replaced.

  • @craigc6626
    @craigc6626 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Give the starter a few hard hits and you should be good. It could also have been what has been draning the battery. Sometimes stuck solenoid will give you a slow drain.

  • @michael_graper
    @michael_graper 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Solder the wires! And with the battery issue I would buy new wire to run from battery to alternator and battery to starter. You can buy 4 gauge copper welding cable and ring terminals for pretty cheap.

  • @Drm99
    @Drm99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you do tap on the starter, do very light taps. You can break and warp the starter case. I had the same issue with my truck about a year ago.

    Battery cable diagnosis Pro-Tip!!:
    Use those jumper cables and connect one clamp to the negative battery post, then the other end(of the same color as is on the battery) to a clean unpainted/rusted surface on the engine ( cylinder head, manifold bolt, alternator bracket) then try and start the engine. If it starts the. You know it has a bad negative battery cable/connection.

    Alternators convert AC to DC. The device that does that is a rectifier. If a rectifier goes bad it causes a drain to the battery.

    • @MrLordwrecker
      @MrLordwrecker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Digger DanielG you got it backwards. The battery is DC the alternator converts it to AC or alternating current. Alternating current = alternator

    • @FrozenPaint
      @FrozenPaint 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Car electronics run on DC. The alternator has an AC output which is then fed through a bridge rectifier to convert it to DC which then powers all the electronics.

Ended up adjusting the positive and negative wires and next thing you know it worked like a charm. Added a battery post shim to the positive terminals since it's not the greatest and it's been running pretty good lately. I'm sure in the long run i'll have to replace the whole Positive wiring harness.

    Matt does that smaller lead coming off that postive battery cable have multiple yellow butt connectors? Remove those and put some heat shrink tubing on the wire around 6-7 IN. Away. Solder those connections, slide the heat shrink tubing over those solder connections and heat up the shrink tubing so it makes a tight water/rust proof connection. Also at the end that connects to the battery, solder a good connector, remove that postive battery cable nut, slide the connector on the stud, then tighten the nut. Good Luck

    Gm starters have the solenoid on the starter. They run close to the exhaust and it gets heat soak. It will usually start once the starter cools of. You can try tapping the solenoid with a hammer while someone tries to start it. Or you can use a screwdriver or thick piece of wire to jump the terminals on the starter. If you have headers buy a starter heat shield

    • @Maximusprimeatyahoo
      @Maximusprimeatyahoo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what i told him, I've looked at other videos with the hood up and he dose have headers, and if he don't put a heat shield on it he will continue to burn up starters.
