I’m from Birmingham, and I’ve never had any problems in these neighborhoods. I’m not saying crime doesn’t exist, it surely does, but to say they are extremely dangerous and make it sound like you could definitely be robbed is not accurate. Avondale has actually become a pricey, gentrified neighborhood, and it shouldn’t be on the list. Many houses in Avondale sell for 300k to 600 k. Avondale now has craft breweries and lots of nice restaurants. Birmingham itself has award winning restaurants (Beard awards) like “The Highlands” and “Hot and Hot Fish Club.” We also have Thai, Indian, Vietnamese, Mexican restaurants, etc. I’ve lived here all my life, for 67 years. We also have a Symphony Orchestra, a Civil Rights Museum, and many other attractions. I invite you to come stay a while longer, and you might see that Birmingham is just like any other city, yes, with crime and poverty, but so much to offer as well. And most of the heart of the city is clean and well kept, much more so than San Francisco when I visited there.

Dude, there's NO reason for anyone coming from the airport that's just visiting the city to venture off into these places you're speaking of! None at all. You're over-exaggerating. There's ONE road out of the airport and in 2 minutes, if you don't turn right or left, you'll come to the interstate going east or west. You'll have even more people scared to come here for no valid reason! Yes, the areas around the airport are bad (I would advise NOT stopping at the gas stations PAST the INTERSTATE unless absolutely necessary), but there's no reason for a visitor to have to even stop before they get on the interstate going to their destination or better parts of town! This part of the video and others should be amended.

@@FLORIDAHOODVLOGS Of course you have every right to say what you want. Not saying that! Overall you're spot on about what you're saying on the city. I agree people need to know it's a violent city. Again, I was just pointing out the airport isn't as dangerous if you do what you're supposed to do and get on the interstate away from there which 99% of people who come from the airport would do. I've lived here all my life, I've never known there to be a high rate of robberies or whatever of people coming from the airport. Can it happen? Yes. But, it shouldn't.

Grew up in Grasselli Heights, went to Huffman High School in the 80’s. East Lake, Centerpoint etc was wonderful back then. West End used to be a beautiful neighborhood, same for Ensley and Fairfield. Smithfield had good and bad. It’s heartbreaking to see the great erosion of properties and communities. Places where African American families just one or two generations ago, worked hard to purchase homes and keep communities going.

I can say too that I love Birmingham for my childhood memories! We made world 🌎 wide history there when we needed to fight against the evils that held us back. It just amazes me how we came together as a whole to fight the evils from other people in Birmingham, and now we are still in a fight ducking bullets from the evils of our own people…I know it’s another subject, but it does make you wonder, 🤔🫣🥺😔

The East lake comunity is turning around , housing values have doubled and tripled in just the last decade . Amazon just built a huge warehouse facility nearby. $18/hr jobs. Flippers have moved in and are making a fortune. Same wth the Northside, lots of activity, new football stadium, tons of investment money , housing prices skyrocketing. New construction projects in the Downtown area are everywhere. Birmingham is booming, . Yes there are pockets that still very bad, but it is not as you say.

I stopped in Birmingham in 1999 at the bus station at 6th and 18th on my way to Florida. I had a 4 hour wait for the next bus to come so after a while I got bored. Being a young and naive white guy from Canada, I thought I would just go for a walk. I walked through downtown and saw that it looked deserted. Businesses had boards over the windows and the park nearby was full of tents and homeless people. I kept walking and then a car pulled up beside me and drove slowly. There was a older African American gentleman driving and asked me how I was doing. I said I was fine. He then asked me if I wanted to go for a drink. I said I couldn't as I have a bus to catch. He asked multiple times insisting that he was lonely and looking for someone to talk to. I said I couldn't and that I really had to get going. He looked pissed off and drove away. I realized at that point that I was likely in the wrong place and that it was obvious to everyone but me. I spent the rest of my wait at the bus station. I wonder sometimes what would have happened if I got in that guy's car.

I was born and grew up in Birmingham. The area where I lived was called Englenook and some called the area Hudson City which is located directly next to the airport. During the time I lived in Birmingham you could leave your door open all day and no one would take anything. Groups from different neighborhoods would get together and play baseball or football games against each other with no violence. I remember during the 60s and 70s the Birmingham Police always rode two officers to a car. The cars trunk would always be loaded with hundreds of phone books making the rear end of the vehicle ride low. The reason why the police had the phone books was because they used them to lay across a Black person's body who they arrested and beat them with their baton leaving no bruises before taking them to jail. During the beatings they would destroy the phone books and that is why they carried so many in the trunk of their cars. It was done so often that it became routine. Anyone that has read a history book are familiar with the name Bull Connor. He was the Chief of Police for Birmingham and also the Grand Wizard of the local area KKK at the time.

If you really want to know about the downfall of Birmingham you need to go back to when Mayor Arrington was elected. There was a conscious effort to move all of the businesses out of the city. The “white flight” was staggering. The election of a black mayor terrified the citizens and the fact that he stayed in office for 20 years was also an issue (entirely too long). But, what you are left with is a skeleton of the “Magic City”. Some of the areas are trying to make a comeback (like Avondale), but the largest industry right now is healthcare.

One night I’ll never ever forget , a car drove to a stop right beside our house, it was a lil hill . A woman was screaming for help and trying to run away . Guy got out of car chases her down . I was maybe 8 and I’ve wondered so often what happened to that poor woman . It was a very scary place and has only continually declined.

I live in a town not far from Birmingham--less than 30 miles away. and you are correct. It is crime ridden. But I think that you are wrong about it being because of gun laws. These criminals do not get their guns the legal way. Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country and still their murder rate has always been high. I have also lived there ! The problem is the poverty rate. And the drugs that are facilitated into these places by important hidden people. And more than likely, the skimming off the top of any $$$ that comes into the City to help. And I believe that this is true for many big cities. I don't go to Birmingham anymore ! It is sad that anyone in the city would support this video. We have our issues but we are making progress. There are underlying issues that need to be addressed first. The erosion of the communities come from our city officials decisions. I guess you have to be a resident to understand how politics play a a pivot role in the city’s decline…

Nah, that liberal bias is hard at work. The World Games, which to be honest, I never heard about before my moving back here in August, should be interesting a time for us to show as we did in '96 for the Olympics, just how great our city/state is.
