  • Welcome to the Miss Universe 2023 recap! What an incredible class of titleholders. I feel like the overall swimsuit competition was the best we've seen since 2018! I enjoyed all of the performances and really hope I can attend the show next year! Congratulations to Miss Nicaragua for taking home the Miss Unvierse title for the first time for her country!

She had that overall impact. Breaking it down, she did not have the best body, or best gown, or even the prettiest face. But she had the best overall “package”.

As a Nicaraguan I really appreciate your support to Sheyniss from the very beggining. We are so proud of her performance and achievements, for us winning Miss Universe is a dream that came true. Sheyniss and her family worked so hard to be where she is right now.
I hope to see in the next Miss Universe competitions more opportunities for non- sash countries. Hugs and kisses from Nicaragua 💙🤍💙

Thank you for your recap. I was so bummed when India, South Africa and USA didn't make it to the top 10. Your explanation cleared it up. When I saw Puerto Rico and Phillipines in gown, my jaw dropped. They were stunning. I still don't understand why Michelle didn't advance. All the women were amazing, it was just a really strong group this year. Thank you for breaking down Miss Nicaragua's answers the crowd was screaming and I could barely hear.

I felt really happy that Nicaragua has won the title this year. Every time she was on the stage, she was stunning. I personally like Puerto Rico, she reminded me of the younger Penelope Cruz! I really couldn't understand how Australia reached the top 3. It would have been better if it was either Colombia or Puerto Rico.
I have been watching your channel for the last two years and it gives me great joy that your channel is growing fast. Hope to see you from Mexico next year. Finally, this year's show was so phenomenal. The stage and the production were just outstanding!

Puerto Rico was top 3 material but when it was time to do the talk, she got nervous and almost stuttered through her response. Colombia made it all about being a mother (yes we get it!!!!) so Australia snuck into the top 3 under radar. But she couldn’t get past Thailand and Nicaragua.

Nicaragua chose Mary Wollstonecraft (one of the OG feminist writers, wrote "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman," contemporary of Rousseau and mother of Mary Shelley, who wrote "Frankenstein"), she and the translator just stumbled over the surname. When I heard the question I knew Nicaragua was going to nail it, she had Mary W in her Miss Universe bio and everything. The stars really aligned for her and she just had the winner's glow about her ever since prelims.

Dear Dani. Thanks for your feedback. I'd like to add up a few details on your summary.
      - Despite El Salvador did well with the stage production & hosting the event successfully, I still feel the finals lack El Salvadoran cultural presentation in it. I'd love to see a similar event to the 2011 MU pageant in Brazil where they had Samba and bossanova performers during swimsuit and EG competitions. This year I expect to see at least a Salvadoran band to accompany the swimsuit portion & John Legend in other sessions.
      - I was hoping that Namibia or S.Africa would move forward, at least one african contestant in top 10.
      - Mary Wollstonecraft was a philosopher and authoress known for her advocacy for women's rights. In her book "the vindication of the rights of women, 1792, she encouraged for equal opportunity for men and women, specially with education and career. Twas awesome for Nicaragua for choosing Mary W and highlights the history of women's achievement dance 18th century.
Meanwhile, Thailand chose Malala, who was born before her. For this type of question, it'd be more wise for choosing someone in the past and having him/her as role model

It’s a given fact that everyone always thinks & wants ones country to be on top or #1. However, in reality it’s just more than the physical looks/appearance/beautiful face or having millions of followers. The panel of judges was quite diverse in ages, ethnic backgrounds, careers, & public notorieties. I think they all came up with the right choice…Miss Nicaragua 🇳🇮 was impeccably amazing on coronation: aside from her statuesque beauty, she exuded confidence, poise, charisma separated from the rest…her final Q&A was exceptional with depth and meaningfulness!
I didn’t follow any of these candidates like most hardcore fans. Just from the prelim, I predicted Nicaragua-Thailand-Columbia would be top 3, but on coronation off the bat I knew 🇳🇮 would win!

Best in Swimwear was Nicaragua . Best in evening gown was Thailand. Best Top 5 answer was Thailand. Puerto Rico should have advanced but she got nervous , made worse when she chose to not use the translator . Best answer in Top 3 was a toss between Thailand and Nicaragua. But it was clear the crowd was cheering on Nicaragua and Anntonia was pressured and could not deliver a stronger answer. You could tell she skipped a beat. Its really tragic because she was the overall best girl for the crown . Australia was beautiful and consistent that's why she went so far . Philippines performance at prelims was stronger than finals night. Her gown was stunning but she was fading behind the front runners like Thailand, Nicaragua , Colombia and Puerto Rico. You could tell she was under too much pressure to deliver. Unpopular opinion : I prefer her prelim gown more . The Filipinos are emotional about it but It was clear that She was a solid Top 6, but not Top 5.

If anyone could notice when Nicaragua appeared during evening gown her blue cape perfectly blended with the flowing waterfall in the background...that moment the judges must have already been convinced shes the winner
I also have been telling from the start Australia will be in top 3 when none of the beauty pageant experts included her in top ten or worse many even ignored her...had her answer been the best she would have been the winner...i almost thought she win the moment the map in the background is of Australia right before the final results were to be announced ....this apart from the fact that the last time an Aussie was crowned the pageant was held in a non sash latin american country (Ecuador)
Another observation is MU is favouring faces which were typical in Trump era more and more ...although there was a transgender, plus size and fully covered contestant like Pakistan in top twenty MU is slowly reviving many of the erstwhile glam aspects like having John Legend and the classiest evening gown in IMG era and prefering more glamouorous faces like Australia Colombia reminiscent of trump era

They are so used to see their delegates moving forward in the competition that they cannot accept the fact that this year, they got bested by a non sash delegate from out of the blue. Hoping this is what is going to continue to happen moving on. Seeing the people of Nicaragua celebrating was the best thing I have seen in years… apparently seeing other people being happy for a win angers them.

Hi Dani. Raylene from western Canada. Sending you an early Happy American Thanksgiving for Thursday. I hope your travels home via planes will go smoothly and I often say this to friends and family who are flying …. “I wish you a very boring flight there and back”. With so many delays and weather issues and overbooked flights. I think a boring flight means all went smoothly and without any issues. 😊😊😊. So that’s my prayer for you as you travel home for Thanksgiving. Now about the pageant. Sooooooooo wow!!!!!!!! What a fabulous show. And the top 20. Incredible. Your recap is always the highlight for me following any pageant especially miss universe. When I watched the preliminary competition. And miss Nicaragua came out in her swimsuit. I knew right then she was the one to beat. She seems so down to earth and her personality invites you in. So genuine. Much like yourself!!! You are so humble, down to earth and your personality invites one in too. I wish I spoke Spanish. The media week has started and I haven’t found much in English. The whole competition was tremendous and that speaks to me of the calibre of all the women and especially the top 20. Down to the top 3. What a competitive year. I could say so much more. But I will leave it at this. I’m grateful to have been able to see the competition. And even more grateful for you and your channel. With pageants in Canada not very popular. I love that you give a place for individuals like myself to feel a sense of community so that there is a place for me to share in the excitement of miss universe. Thank you for all you do for us pageant fans and contestants alike. Cheers Raylene 🎉🎉 🎉

I feel like besides Thai people, not a lot of people realized that. It was a nice surprise, but somehow the final night dress didn’t not impress me. I feel like she could’ve done something more iconic to secure that crown. Also I love the production and styling in MUT, something that MU didn’t give to Anntonia!! She would’ve shined in finals! Dani! SO appreciate your support and defense of Colombia’s EG performance. I feel like it’s been super easy and, dare I say, “trendy” to attack what seems to be the same color/design of the gowns in recent years. When in reality, each dress and design has been inspired & unique to the girl wearing it. They’re all pieces of art that should be celebrated and have clearly helped our delegates advance. At the end of the day, as we know, it’s not the dress that wins but the actual candidate and what she has to say and do in the gown that counts. PS also thought that Camila had done enough to make it to the top 3 like you did, but alas. Thanks again for your amazing analysis! ❤
Also - additional MU content - would love to see you list candidates you’ve seen the last year at other grand slams that you think have the goods and should try for their country’s National MU competitions. 🤓

Now I have a question for you, Dani, there seems to be a bit of controversy swirling around attached to this year's pageant which I'm not going to get into. Just wanted to add that Nicaragua used in top 3 Q&A name: Mary Wollstonecraft. She was the author of "Vindication of the Rights of woman" in 1972 which is considered by many the cornerstone of advocating equality for women. She was considered the first feminist and was very vocal about her point that society is keeping women in the role of “convenient domestic slaves”. She advocated for women to be able to have any professional career they dream about (just like a men) Above being a writer and historian she also opened a school for kids.
FUN FACT: She was the mother of Mary Shelley, - the author of "Frankenstein"
    .
