Just to let everybody know: the fuel systems on these are fine (N57 engine this). The only reason they fail so often (or atleast it seems that they do) is because people that drive BMWs are too cheap and put 10£ of fuel each time and sometimes even let it run dry. This is how you introduce a bunch of air and heat into the fuel system and destroy the high pressure fuel pump. Then it sends shavings throughout the whole system. You then need to replace: high pressure fuel pump, all injectors, clean all the lines, clean the fuel tank. It's a massive job.
So please, DO NOT LET IT RUN DRY. Same applies to 2 litre N47 engines too. Just fill it with fuel when it's on 1/5 of the tank. Don't wait.

I don’t think a premium car with low mileage and under 10 years old should have serious problems with fuel system. Also this car was well maintained so this it’s another reason to stay away from BMW’s reliability. 😅

Agreed on the blind, love a good pano roof. I only close mine when it’s legitimately hot and it’s being left parked outside for a decent length of time, in a vain attempt to make the car slightly less of an oven when I get back in, but that’s hardly a frequent occurrence here in the UK. Otherwise I’d much rather have more light in the cabin.

Watching Matts videos you notice a strange relationship between people and cars. The newer more expensive cars seem to be looked after whereas the cheap slightly older ones are run into the ground. Then when both of these types become really old everyone loves them and no expense will be spared to keep it at its best like Matts SL.

I used to hate the BMW GT range (3er, 5er and 6er) but have recently come to like them. They do offer a brilliant amount of versatile for the money, even if the early versions are quite visually challenging; although by the LCI 3 GT and 6 GT they do like quite cool in my opinion! Also, they offered such strange engine/ gearbox combos; you could have a 550i (V8) GT, and a 335i Manual GT. You've got to wonder what the market for such cars was!

    • @chetanrajanwal

335i gt manual? Maybe for a towing market? 550gt for the long distance cruiser who wants the power to tow/have fun when needed😅 we just recently got a 620dgt which is absolutely lovely. Perfect for grown adult/elder years road trips with the grandchild and economical around town when used everyday.
We considered x3/x5s however when trying to get in, it was too high for my mum who is the primary driver and her knees are not what they used to be.
This was also offered with a lot of spec, so all in all, win win win😊

I still don't get the point of the GT series other than parting muppets from their money. Each model is:
      1. No bigger on the inside that it's non-GT counterpart
      2. Has less headroom in the rear because of the rear roofline than it's non-GT counterpart
      3. It's more expensive to purchase and slower/less efficient than it's non-GT counterpart
      4. Worse to drive (like an SUV) i.e. it might be trying to look sporty but you can't cheat physics compared to a saloon
      5. Can't go offroad
      5. My eyes.............................just look at it 🤮🤮
(the 3 GT was a bit better for space in the back but the 5 GT is a joke in this respect)

7 series chassis advantages without having to drive an actual limo. When new they didn't quite cut it in the looks department but when bought in the used market you don't care about looks and it's all about comfort and the drive.

I don't know exactly what the price actually was in pounds when new! But I can assure you it was in between the 5 and the 7 series! So, basically, expensive! Although the exterior is awkward (matter of fact it's kind of a marmite car; you either hate it or love it) it's a clever car because with less money than a 7 series, you have an unconventional car which gives you a bigger interior space than a 5 series F10/11, a better practicality, the same amount of legroom in the back as in the 7 series and the same headroom as in the X5! All of this, on the second hand market........ At a WAAAAAAAAAY lower price than an X5, X6 or SUVs in general

After all, trying to fold your mirrors at say, 30 mph, would be a safety issue surely? Scrolling down through the comments afterwards it seems I was right and that if you had Goggled it, you'd have found the info you needed. A lesson for the future, no doubt. Also, if your mechanic watches your videos, which he possibly does, perhaps he is feeling suitably embarrassed at his charge for 'fixing' the mirrors?

    Great video as always.
One thing that annoys me as I can't work it out is why so many car reviewers use the phrase "pillarless doors" when it isn't the pillar that is missing (presumably so the doors don't fall off!...) and it isn't the door but rather the window that is missing the frame. Frameless doors might just work but they are literally frameless windows no?........just me then.

I walked out sold it cash to a trader for £9,500. Shows what a bunch of thieves Marshals are. It was gold with oyster leather had all the extras loved that car. Now have a 3GT.

All very well having these direct-injection diesels with good performance and high fuel economy but that £1800 bill for a new HP fuel pump offsets a lot of the savings, if not all of them.
BMW doing in 2010 what Rover did in 1976 with the SD1... minus the good styling.

I agree with the removal of said blind. Every car that has a panoramic roof, and that I have sat in, has always had it open, pretty much useless. The next person who owns it can simply deal with the expense of paying for a new blind, or tinting it if preffered. Definitely not cutting corners in the slightest Matt! 🙂plus a nice change from the cheap that gives nothing but headaches 😂

I have a 530GT 2012 model. Amazing comfortable car and with sports button it’s quick. But Heavy. No major issues to date and and rear airbags were replaced. Fully loaded with kids and gear it flows beautifully and handles sublime. Used to have m3 and the like. But with family those days are shelves for now. On a b road it’s great fun.

The 5 Series GT is a very nice car, it deserves a good home; in reference to the roof blind, you made the right call, I would have opted like you to tint the roof glass, just for some shade one those long summer days in 2024.....lets not talk about the washout of 2023.

not fixing the blind is a good idea. maybe put some mid level tint on that above glass so the future passengers don't get there eye balls seared out by the blazing sun from above, but other than that it's a good fix

I used to own a 530d GT. It's a fantastically versatile car - drop the seats and you have a massive load floor and a big tailgate, with seats up and the parcel shelf in place it's a luxurious saloon in a way that my current 5-series Touring never quite manages. The most important of the extras on this car are the reverse cameras. Rear visibility is very restricted, and it's a big barge. Even with parking sensors I kept reversing into things.

Great to see a 5 series GT. I loved mine. Mine was white as well. It really stood out from the crowd. Its timeless if you can say that about any car nowadays. Loved it so much I upgraded to a 630d GT Msport. Why have an SUV when you can drive around in luxury for half the price.

I actually envy you! I have a 3 series G20 (the latest model) and I'm replacing it in a few months for a 5 GT because I can't afford to purchase a 630d GT M Sport at the moment 😅 also, I'm 34 years old! Which means the GT although it's a sort of practical and sporty 7 series...... Without being a 7 series....... It's not necessarily an old man's car!!!

I wanted to buy one of these as I don’t mind the styling and it was just a little unique but it’s a very heavy car with a standard 3ltr diesel so fuel economy isn’t that good tax is higher so didn’t really work well enough for me.
Also with the timing chain I think these are just as susceptible for failures like the N47 engines, if I were buying one of these used first thing I would do is the timing chain if it hasn’t been done already.
