***No stabilization or rolling shutter correction was applied to the footage, only a simple color grade.
The Flying Squirrel is finally finished! This design was conceived of in April 2023 and it's taken hundreds of hours of design, prototyping, and field testing to create the best performing naked BMPCC4K FPV drone in existence.
The components used in this flight demonstration are:
- 2X Auline 3300mah 4S in series (8S)
- Xing 3110 900kV Motors
- Gemfan 8060 carbon fiber props
- iFlight Succex 80A 8S ESC
- Foxeer F722 V2 FC (with 100uF cap soldered to 5V circuit for noise reduction)
- TBS crossfire
- DJI/caddx air unit with nebula pro (This frame is 100% compatible with DJI O3)
Camera settings used in flight:
- Laowa 7.5mm ultra light lens (150g) at f/22
- 4 stop ND filter
- Silicon Pro 128GB Cfast
- 24 fps
- 144 deg shutter speed
- BRAW 12:1
The sensor noise indicated in the flight footage is caused by a worn out/not fully seated sensor ribbon plug. This was a prototype with mismatched carbon plates from previous models which put extra strain on the sensor ribbon cable so it wasn't able to seat properly sometimes. This is a non-issue with the production version. In addition, this camera PCB board has been swapped dozens of times so the mating cycles on the ribbon socket is probably over 20 cycles by now due to the development process.

A Cinelifter you can Hand Launch!? I'm In!
Haha, it's not quite "pocket sized" anymore though, but neither was the original camera.
Oh cool it's Potato Jet! Lol can't wait to see him having fun with one of these on his channel next 😂
@@tjthedogtrainer Totally thought the same, not surprised to see Gene here :D
was now gonna mention you
I get the puckered O-ring flying my Gopro onboard... You got the stones to put a BlackMagic camera on yours! I bow to your testicular fortitude!
I was gonna say, you gotta have a fair bit of extra cash lying around to just throw a BMPCC around like that and over water. I don't even want to lose my analog only camera drone, lol.
😂😂😂
#facts
There’s no way to buy it already built?
@@yusiffranklin1754 I think this system is moderately DIY. Look at the website and it shows at what level you get the kit.
You're flying this cine rig like most people would fly their acro beater quads. That speed is unreal! You're making that huge outdoor space feel like a small backyard. And the quad is taking all that!
Amazing.
He's done some time based speed changes in post, for the creative element of it.
Thanks! 8S really changes the landscape and you can eat it up in very little time. The vertical arms give better control at high speed due to aerofoil effect which provides lateral movements without having to tilt the entire drone as much.
@@PiDsPagePrototypes Actually the only editing to the footage is color grade. It makes me happy that you think I did speed changes to the flight footage haha! It's very fast and no speed ramping was applied to any of the footage, it's all raw.
@@strawhatsam wow! Try to film something thats going REALLY FAST then. It's will be easier for the viewer to understand how crazy this rig are.
I thought that footage is sped up by 300%! Very cool
@@strawhatsam and a little bit of gyrostab is necessary. But anyway this is a very cool project
Oh man that arm structure is a 15/10. This is awesome! Fantastic work! Looks incredible
i've never been that excited over a frame design. It looks like there is every little thing that we can dream of; except for weatherproofing. But I guess for winter/snow I could tape the helll out of that thing.
Thanks Kabab! Yeah truss arms are certainly stiff. The only disadvantages of them though are less durability and more susceptible to secondary harmonics so dynamic notch filters are important to keep enabled for this frame.
@@strawhatsam yeah unfortunately I'm well aware of the challenges of this sort of arm structure. I would test 1mm thicker carbon for the spars...may not make any difference.
It's the 3D element of the arms in the Z plane that I'm specifically referring to when I say the structure looks good. It'll never be close to perfect unfortunately. Overall weight distribution is not ideal on the craft but you're very limited by the desire to have as small of a footprint as possible. Overall for what you're trying to accomplish I think this design looks wonderful
The lack of stabilization is rough, but that image quality is breathtaking. Can't wait to see more flights on this rig.
the whole point is to showcase its flying capabilities...
@@PRZFPV That's kind of what I meant. Seeing that image quality while performing like a 5 inch freestyle quad is mind-blowing. Sorry for lacking clarity.
You can easily stabilize it in post. Every flightcontroller has a gyro in it.
You will obviously loose some quality but thats no diffrent on a action camera.
@@r00kiet80 BMPCC4K has gyro data recorded with the latest firmware. That should do the trick, shouldnt it?
@@r00kiet80 If you plan to stabilize in post, just make sure to record with a fast shutter speed/angle to get rid of any motion blur. Then you can always add pixel motion blur back in post as well. Otherwise your footage will be technically stable but it will become blurry at (seemingly) random moments.
Excuse me sir, you are not supposed to fullsend a camera like that! This is totally bad ass and I love it. Well done 👍
As someone that used to design and sell racing drones, you have designed some seriously nice solutions into this frame, Nice work!
the design looks amazing, though i must say there was some significant wobbles and shake. i wonder if it is a frame resonance issue or a COG issue. in my testing the top heavy drones carrying a BMPCC4K always have this wobble but you dont see it in the x8 because of the bottom elements evening it out. or course frame resonance is a big part of it.
How did I know I would find a comment from DrX here? Hahaha
@@Carguyforlife I love straw hat sam's designs. Which is why I also am so critical
I can attribute the low throttle wobbles to the lack of thorough tuning on my part. The bateery setup I was using was dual Auline 3300mah 4S (600g) which is quite a hefty load and makes though low throttle snap maneuvers quite challenging. I really wanted to push the drone to its limits for this video to give it that raw feel. I am sure that with a smaller 2600mah 8S GNB batteries and spending a day to tune, you can get even better results.
The best flying setup for acro performance is actually 6S 2806.5 1700kV and 6" props. This has absolute control, but doesn't have the flight time like 8 inch. Best setup for 8inch for acro is Xnova 2812 1100kV 6S 8060 props, this one feels like a simulator.
@@strawhatsam what's your go to for tuning out low throttle wobbles? I've always found it difficult to tune it out and mostly just try to design it out. So it would be a great tool in my belt if I could approach this problem from multiple angles
Wow thans insane man. It makes my monday after work. You did a great job!
Thanks a bunch, I'm glad you enjoyed!
In all my life of FPV, I've never felt the chills like you just brought me now.
I'm glad I was able to inspire!
Could this take a crash? For some reason the camera looks so durable with that carbon body!
It should be illegal to casually drop vids like this man... Amazing
Damn she flys like a freestyle drone props to u for designing such a dope design. Bet damn good center of gravitiy everything packed into the middle.
Cineboner❤
Absolutely
I think this could really benefit from a grommet isolation camera mount. You can see a fair bit of shakiness in the abrubt stops/turns. Looks like a great cinelifter though!
Thanks! The bobbles and shakes from abrupt maneuvers are actually from the tune. Because it is hard mounted, the camera will do exactly what the drone does. Any viscoelestic damping would actually worsen any bounceback.
@@strawhatsam yea i forgot to mention the pids. Tuning would definitely help but it looks good already! From my understanding an isolation mount would help with electronic stabilization, but im no expert so i could very likely be wrong.
Absolutely sent it! that's wild
Thank you I am glad you enjoyed!
When the dust settles, how much does that rig cost all in?
It really depends on how you spec it out! 8S vs 6S, 6inch vs 8inch and all that.
One Word---------------------EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool! But next gen has to be with O3, let's be honest! haha
Hi Luke, this frame is 100% compatible with the DJI O3 air unit of course with the VTx mounting plate that comes with the kit. the 20mm spacing vertical plates fit the O3 camera perfectly too. So it's actually designed for the most up to date hardware. I use the OG air unit because I am cheap!
Very well thought and pragmatic design! Loved the integration of carbon fiber and 3D printed parts!
insane drone.
insane footage.
insane editing.
video 15/10
Wow, I really like this!👍🏻👍🏻
Seriously badass flying bro!
I can see myself flying it and barely clipping a leaf and getting stuck a mile away from me 60 ft up in a tree 😂
I'd need some Military StarLink GPS system, sonar, radar & OnStar!
Lmao 🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely breathe taking design.
Really awesome flying, really cool product, really impressive all around. Must have required a lot of work to put this out.
but...
I don't know exactly why, I just don't like the look of the video. Something about it just seems really off to me, I don't know what it is about it. I guess if I had to nitpick one thing it is that there's too much camera movement? but at the same time that must have been the goal? I guess I wanted to see the scenery better or something and it bothered me that I couldn't take a minute to enjoy the surroundings? and something about the video quality seems unnatural, maybe it's because I am too used to what go pro footage looks like in this situation haha.
is the footage interpolated by chance?
Wicked edit💯👊👊😎🔥💪🔥💪🔥🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Love the damn song. And the flight is super rad
Just ordered five new black magic flying squirrels 🐿️ ‼️👌🏾🔥📸 #FreshTasteGroup
Do you use the gyro data from the BMPCC to stabilize the footage?
There is no stabilization on any of these clips. But this drone is compatible with gyroflow without getting artificial jello.
Coulda given us nice smooth cinema shots and we all woulda been fine. My man goes balls to the fucking wall ripping thousands of $$ like it’s nothing. A straw hats off to you sir 🫡
only one wee thing is that if you fuck up the landing you better disarm with the props in that configuration.
but wat a fucking RIPPER! nice work.
That design is super well thought through. So cool integrating the camera into the frame!
Wow!
Release a BNF O3 version with Naked BMPCC.
Take my Money!!🤣🤣🤣
I will certainly do O3 for a BNF version if I do that. Crossfire too?
@@strawhatsam Now you are singing my song!
Great engineering, but BMPCC just got too much jello. Need something with digital stabe and higher framerate.
If someone comes up with an arm design that is not made from flat plate carbon, I'd be happy to make a mold for the arm design and produce prototype arms so they can be tested.
There is couple of nice shots, but the pilot capabilities doing multiple fast flips in short time are not interesting for this kind of "cinematic" video. Those can be done with any camera.
Thats amazing! Not sure if you're open to it, but id love to try color grading/stabikizing your footage and see how it looks - i shoot on a BMPCC4k and 6k normally, and would love to see what a workflow like this would look like if i incorporated footage like this.
bro cut your fingernails dude be clean omg
i would never buy such overpriced DIY drone.
but i WOULD built it myself.
can you do a tutorial for the software? or overall build?
carbon is nice, but 3d printed should do it too.
made me dizzy AF... couldn't watch !! whew !!! but cool none the less !!
That may be the best footage I've ever seen from a compact drone. Finally, a cinematic sensor on a small drone. This is how it should be. Well done.
Incredible looking thing but there’s a lot going on with the body/frame like you could simplify 100 grams out of it.
what the the weight dude? and whens this gonna be on the market fella? QUALITY DRONE..
"hundreds of hours of design, prototyping" oh man, wait until you learn about the _hundreds of thousands of hours_ that have been put into the all the fpv / fc software that powers your design...
Looks like a very bad tune... The image quality is pure porn, but the stability after rolls and such is realy jerky!
❤ at first sight🎉 what a frame and flight🎉. Will this take a normal stack? Interesting build ❤ from South Africa 🌍
Solar Panel Drone, a day! Bye, bye 34 minutes...!!
QUad looks great but im not convinced by the footage or flying
3:33 uht, scratch the take, saw a shadow; lol. Beautiful everything
Super FPV CHILLZ! Somebody give me a glass of water to thrown in the face.
Talk to me about top speed (20 second bursts)... I need an aviation chase rig that can hold 100-120 mpg for at least ten seconds.
Doable with that setup including that camera rig?
I did some thinking about this question and here's what I got for you. The most important factor will be wind direction to acheive this. Despite the vertical arms, the center body still creates a lot of drag, so planning will be needed to execute this shot. As long as there is not a head wind it should be possible. For the best chance, I would look into 70-80g weight motors with a touch higher kV then I am running in this video (3110 900kV) on 8S. The Axis Flying 3010 1050kV seems to fit the bill spec-wise. And for props the Gemfan 8060 is sure to be smooth and fast, but if even more speed is required then consider getting APC 8X6E biblades and balancing them.
The lipo packs I used probably could handle the amps for 10 seconds, but the auline batteries you can only get from them directly. Maybe there are some better 4S or even 8S packs out there with more punch.

Hey Straw Hat Sam - I'm making a video about the history of modifying Blackmagic cameras. Do you mind if I cover your drone as part of the video and use some images of it?
Thanks!
Hey, that's no problem! Go ahead.
I'm not a huge fan of this color balance and I swear the frame rate is weird too, but this is a sweet build
It's going to be great when you get your PIDS and Rates locked in. (music is fire tho)
Is that the new AirHogs drone they sell at Toys-R-Us?
The Price is right ✅️ 👌 on cue. Compared to other bnf this is going to be a hit.
My 7.5mm is 100g more but I don't fly MFT 👀
This thing flys like a simulator 5 inch amazing stuff. What camera is this the colors are incredible.
The flying is horrible, what a waste of proper camera quality if it's to fly like this...
So cool I really like the design and the capabilities fpv has gone to. I never knew we would get to the point where fpv can carry movie cameras and pull of sick stunts. 😮
I don't know anything about this.. global shutter?
Очень плохо. Этот дрон используется не по назначению. Такое ощущение как будто это тяжёлый, неповоротливый, неуправляемый бетонный блок, и для динамичности видео ускорено.
Insane, the absolute materialization of the term "fly it like you stole it". Definitely interested..
Should be a perfect way to capture images for importing into Unreal Engine.
looks amazing although the sudden jerky movements are not very cinematic😅
I don't like the image that this camera produces.
This is NOT a flying Squirrel configuration and actually resembles a true x. Flying Squirrel is actually a drone that has longer front arms than the back. Similar to a deadcat design but the front arms are at the same angle as the rear. Example of this is a quad with 6" arms on the front and 5" arms on the back.
Correct! It's a true X layout, perfect square and this provided the best handling performance for this particular drone. The Flying Squirrel name was a carry-over from a previous design version that was exactly what you described and looked hilariously like a squirrel. I like the name so much I kept it.
Omfg I need one, like actually lmao am almost at the level of pro where I need to start looking at this
did you know that place were your flying ? how many takes dude? thanks
absolutly insane !
either the camera sucks, or this is all fake 2k, 4k upload. way washed out
There’s no way to buy it fully assembled?
that music was soooo annoying wrecked the entire video
Omg a black magic on a drone? What's the battery life tho? Lol
Damn sick baby . What’s the price?
No data on weight - what was this rig at?
This rig for this video was 1600g mostly because of the giant 8S 4S series Lipo setup. AUW ranges from 1400 to 1600g depending on prop size and batteries and lenses.
There’s no way so buy it fully assembled?
Holy smokes. That's some fantastic gear and skills!
next please build the cinelifter for hardcore sbang freestyle :D
This is the craziest freestyle drone I've ever seen
vibration of the motors do not interfere with the camera sensor? i see a lot vibration going on.
Is it me or is the image looking a bit soft?
Could be! I can say it's not due to any kind of vibrations as I spend countless hours optimizing that. Probably my color grading skills at work lol. Also the biggest factor perhaps is that the camera is moving around like crazy with all the acro causing the motion blur, combined with the densely details background of the foliage, it's a challenging image to render for many cameras.
@@strawhatsam very good stuff though man, take my wallet😆😆
Besides the owners possible explanations, notice lots of mist hitting the lens and drying on it.
Juicy flicking a $3000 camera… I want your life
Incredible flying but I’d like to see what you see live
so if i want to buy this what else do i need to buy with it? (to fly it and have fun only)
After fail of having kits and frames, this does not make sense anymore
Loved it!
Nice video and music. Where did you get the music from?
Hello, I heard somewhere that after updating the bmpcc firmware to the latest one, the camera does not record without a screen connected. Is this true? Is there any way around this? Your design is amazing and I want to have it :D
problème résolu
that price is really good. I was honestly expecting it costing like 5k but its below 1.
I genuinely might buy it in the future for car and nature shoots.
Oh camera is not included, I see. Either way account the camera price itself it's not that horrible for the wallet.
Absolut epic 💯👌🏻😎👍🏻👍🏻
IT LOOKS AWESOME! Any naked camera set-up scares me, due to the reduced durability. Will you guys be making anything to carry a full BM?
Straw, Like~ you made pro ! talk to you soon~😉
that was an unxcplained insane flight
it's kind of wild how small good camera can be nowadays
So do you disassemble the camera and then mount the sensor/pcb into the frame? Can you buy the camera hardware by itself or do you have to get the whole thing?
Great question! You buy the BMPCC4K camera itself and then you buy the Flying Squirrel kit ($669 USD). Once you have those two things you can decase the blackmagic camera and put the motherboard and sensor into the drone frame along with all your FPV components.
I will be posting a Rotorbuilds page which will include all the recommended drone components for best flights.
Not bad for a beginner. (lol, sarcasm)
also perfect spot to show off this new rig ✨
Unbelievably epic!! Great storytelling as usual.
Wow! I started the hobby like a year ago and constantly wonder why everything is so rudimentary and nothing fits together. On/off switch yay! And that battery solution is very elegant.
I been thinking of building a quad with a similat solution to the arms. Didn’t know what to do with the engine mounts. Got some ideas now, thanks.
Great stuff!
Thanks! I hope you can have a few take aways from this frame design!
