Awesome!! I just looked them up and they scare me 😂🤣😂 Do they eat the string as well? Thanks so much for watching and telling me about the wax worms!! It is amazing how nature can clean up our messes!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost yes they eat strings. The things is wax worms normal live in bee hives. So you want a fully enclosed system like the soldier fly system for rapid composing of meat. Look 👀. This guy in Costa Rica explains the soldier fly system th-cam.com/video/87e7VdYSGLU/w-d-xo.html I believe the same thing can be done with plastics. But old bee wax has more nutrients than plain plastic. Mushrooms grow on cellulose and can also break down plastic. Am enclosed system would allow you to collect the wax worms for chicken feed. Like soldier fly. So that means we can compost everything. 1. Wax worms for plastic 2. Mushrooms for plastic and wood 3. Soldier flies for the stinky food waste like meat 4. Vinegar for the bones the soldier flies won’t eat, which can be feed back to plants 5. Vermipost for fresh greens and leaves 6. Macrobiotic heat based composting for all the above to finish it. As the compost pile normally heats to 160 degrees, you can run a water hose through it and use that heat to warm greenhouse in winter. I am studying these systems to save the world. 😊 Because we can redesign urban housing. From current over price Tiny apartments to expansive green energy towers like the one they built in Taipei. This condo high rise have balconies extending an acre out. The grow fruit trees and vegetables in these garden platforms. No run off water as thé balcon recollects it for later use. The building itself harvest rain 🌧 into water tanks at each level for household use. It’s an energy tower. It has wind 🌬 tunnels built into the building like chimney catching wind, with tiny wind turbines inside. Look 👀 it’s like this one in Chicago but better due to building height. The one in Chicago makes 15,000 kilowatt hours per year just on wind 🌬 👀 th-cam.com/video/chpkCDQ6s2Q/w-d-xo.html It has down pipe water turbines built into rain harvesting system. Similar to the ones in Portland Oregon that power half the city. 👀 th-cam.com/video/NO45Sj6hNB0/w-d-xo.html Every 50 feet of pipe produces 1,100 MEGA. WATTS. Not kilo but MEGAWATTS per year. The solar panels are built into the siding of the building as that is a much larger surface area than the roof, and less subject to weather. We know that produces a lot of energy that’s why solar companies are giving you panels in exchange for control of your surface area. Taipei also makes all the useful computer chips, specifically hydrogen plates for hydrogen fuel cell cars. Hydrogen generators are in the buildings garage to serve residents with on demand free fuel. The generator uses 2 volts of electric with water to separate hydrogen and oxygen. They have both combustible hydrogen engines, and the fuel cell engines. Both burn clean, release only water vapor; the later is more expensive because of the rare mineral used in the cell. I believe one of these building in every major city would save us from the fuel crisis. I also believe it makes ending homelessness profitable, as building produces excess energy and pay for h to themselves If we are to save the world we must end homelessness as that is the desperation that feeds the greed that raids our environment. The garden balconies are managed by an app. Like Siri. It runs the sprinklers or sprays organic pesticides and open close the windows. Composting is the last part to this puzzle and “ can’t wait to test out wax worms 🪱 “ Oh toilets are incinerator toilets with wet and dry filters on exhaust. New York spends billions cleaning toilet water so people can drink it safely. Let’s just say Taiwan save a crap 💩 ton of money by not creating sewer water; and people drink water filter by the sky and sun itself. Lovely 🥰 If I were Wonder Woman I would have fixed everything for you already. But it’s just my icon. 😞 I wish people would talk about these things more, that’s when we can think about changing things.
@@diversitylove5460 I love it!!! I believe nature is the answer to so many issues!! Thanks for all the information and youtube links!! Harvesting the vast amounts of energy available through the sun light that hits earth or the weather/rain/gravity or the energy of molecules and atoms in a way that is cheaper than our current ways of producing energy will be our greatest achievement in the last 300 years!! I get hopeful when I see the passion of people like you!!!
A great drinking game would be have a swig evertime you say "in moderation" I remember my early 20's, I'm amazed I survived, lol. I'd be interested to see the temps under that potato in a couple days !! Awsomeness Patrick Cheers J&C 🌱🪱🌱
😀 Everything in moderation...to include moderation sometimes!! It is one of my favorite words to use raising boys!! I was thinking about putting a temperature sensor in there...maybe I should have done it with this feeding!! If I feel some warmth, I'll put one in to monitor it!! Thanks for watching brother!!🤜🤛🪱🪱🪱
Hi Patrick, I mentioned that I don't get the tape with strings. Well, a couple days ago I did get a box that had tape w/strings. I always rip off the tape. I agree about moderation👍 You really are The Worm Whisperer🪱
Thanks Peggy!! I mostly have been ripping the tape off but occasionally, lazily, let one go thru until I saw Sandra's video!! I was even collecting some of the tape to give it a test myself, but she saved me and my worms doing all the work!! Everything in moderation...including moderation!! Thanks so much for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱
That cuc-juice-cicle formed when I took the ziplock bag it was slowly rotting in and threw it in the freezer...I was gonna let it thaw out again, but it looked too cool...and I didn't want a mess!! I love a good avocado worm ball!! We've got to train your worms to take advantage of those avocado shells!!😂 Thanks so much for stopping by to watch AV!!🪱🪱🪱
I'm not sure if it's something wrong with my worms, or perhaps something wrong with the avocados - but they certainly don't respond to the avocado shells the way I see in your systems :)
Very strange...kinda like sailors that don't like to eat fish 😂🤣😂 I'm guessing your bins are so well run that they don't have to hide out in avocado shells like mine do!!😀
Thanks Rick!! That potato is the big question mark for me!! I've put in cooked then frozen, but never raw then frozen and never this much!! A quick check on day two and no smell so far!! Fingers crossed!! Thanks so much for dropping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
Look at all those worms 🪱 Just amazing!!! Red spaghetti lol 😂 I need to get my worm farm set up soon, and I hope I can get it looking as nice and clean as yours! xx Cathi xx 😘
😀 Moving red spaghetti!! That will be great to get your worm farm up and running on your homestead!! They will gladly transform your food scraps for you!! Thanks so much for stopping by Cathi!!!🪱🪱🪱
I know this video is older but how you addressed the Amazon box tape was perfect timing. I was shredding cardboard today and removed as much of the tape as I could, but I know there were small pieces left. Amazon really needs to work on that! 😂
Not gonna lie: I know your channel is a worm channel, but for WHATEVER reason, I clicked on it today, thinking I was clicking on a food channel, and when you lifted the lid, I just about barfed. hahahahaha
@@Vermicompost A person's head space is so important in food perception, eh? I once bit into a mashed potato patty thinking it was meat. The fluffiness HORRIFIED me. I was like, "WTH part of the animal is this??"
@@Vermicompost Man, I YANKED that thing away from my face and STARED at it for like 5 solid seconds, before I realized what I was looking at! Then I said, "OH! It's POTATO!" and got laughed at by everyone at the table.
Goodness gracious great balls of worms! I think the tape string is nylon. So they don't eat the string. Hmm. A cucumber cube. lol I saved way too many cucumbers in the freezer. Maybe if I had four or five vermihuts at full strength. I suspect it's going to get tossed into the compost. Thanks for dispelling the myths.
😂🤣😂 That was a fun worm ball!! Nylon makes more sense! I always think I'm gonna eat way more cucumbers than I do...or at least I think I'm gonna have time to pickle them, but my son leaving it in his refrigerator until it looked like that takes the cake!! More for the worms!! I'm hoping with my Urban Worm Bag up and running that I'll be able to feed the worms all my, my mom's and my son's households worth of food scraps...right now some still go in the compost pile as well. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
Hiya wormie friend!!! 🪱🪱🪱 hahahah I had a chuckle that your son is learning the right amount of food to buy 🤣 that’s awesome, that new found adulting takes practice 🙌🏼 but on the positive, the wormies are benefitting! 🤣 I love these myth busters, especially the one about citrus, that has always been pummelled into people…… great video my friend, I enjoyed the massive worm ball ! Yeeeew!!! 🪱🙌🏼🙏🌻💓💐
Yes!! It is so fun to watch them grow up and take over the responsibilities they took for granted when we did them!! I think knowing how much to buy and make was the hardest for me to learn as well coming from a big family with big meals being made all the time!! And on the other hand my mom & dad are having to figure out the same thing as all 5 of their kids are gone and they have to figure out how to buy and cook less!! Either way my worms are enjoying the journey!! Myth Busters are fun to show especially when they can see it actually working in a real worm bin!! Thanks so much for your wonderful comments and for all your support with my videos!! I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week!!🪱🪱🪱
We just got a freeze dryer and our fruit cores/banana peels pile is getting pretty high. I will need to feed the outdoor composter soon. In the meantime the worms are eating well. I may slip a freeze dried banana chip under the paper to see if they attack it immediately or if they wait until it becomes rehydrated and mushy.
OOOOoooowwww!!!! I want one!! I only have a dehydrator and the fruit doesn't last too long when I make it...because we eat it all so fast!! That is a great question, will the worms snack on it before it rehydrates??!? I think I know the answers until I actually try things, then the worms always seem to surprise me!! Thanks so much for watching, please update us if you give it a try!!🪱🪱🪱
Yay! I made it as the first wurban legend! Your Amazon tape looks identical to what I get here in British Columbia. You would never see fragments of tape left over from your micro shredder, so it's good that you remove it all. As for food legends, I always do a mixture of food scraps depending on what we made for dinner, so nothing is ever in excess. The only exception is pumpkin season! ~ Sandra
That was a brilliant experiment and you did it for so long that there was no doubt!! I occasionally let some tape slip through in my shredder so I'm glad you taught us all the worms do not eat it!! Yes, pumpkin season, which I've manage to prolong, is always a fun time to ALMOST over feed my worms🤣😂🤣 They absolutely love it!! Thanks so much for all your support and for the awesome amazon tape/worm bin experiment!!🪱🪱🪱
@@clivesconundrumgarden H in you guys, I add lots of potato peelings to my worm bins, they seem to like it. I’ve never added a whole mushy potato tho, so we shall see. I did have lots of peelings in worm island and worms were thought out . I didn’t smell vodka, or patchine.👍🏻💪💗🥔
I agree with the feeding advice. I remember feeding a manderin that had started going bad in a lower tray of my 360....... forgot about it, and when I was mixing up the tray, noticed more worms than usual..... then saw a tiny piece of the skin. I have never fed a whole potatoe, it will be interesting to see how quickly they consume it.
Another great example of worms eating, even favoring citrus!! The whole potato is gonna be either a great success or a smelly failure!!! So far no smell when I checked on it!! Thanks so much for watching and for letting us know how citrus fared in your Worm Factory 360!!🪱🪱🪱
One thing I noticed in my first two month old worm bin from putting in half a juiced lemon is 1. the worms didn’t go for it quickly compared to the other things and 2. the fruit fly larvae seem to love it 😨 But it is disappearing for sure!
Thanks for sharing your experience here!! Citrus is definitely a slow food. You should see the worms eat citrus faster as your worm bin matures and the microbiota matures within it. Burying food scraps deep should help with the fruit flies but mosquito dunks solution is a good long term fix if you have problems. I just put one in my rain barrel every months and use that water when dampening my bedding. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
So great to hear that your worms love it!! Hopefully I didn't over do it with the whole potato!! Thanks for telling us about your experience with some of these W-urban Legends...it definitely helps to give people confidence that they can feed them to their worms when they see folks with experience telling them it works!! I appreciate you stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
I have a micro-cut shredder as well and it really chops up the cardboard. Expired grain, huh? Grains don't last long enough to get that expired that I cannot use it. Still the idea of the ground flour is sound. Maybe grind up the dry pasta and bread to add to your chow as well.
I love my micro cut shredder!! Oats are the big ones that go expired on us...we crave it then get sick of it! 😂🤣😂 Grinding up dried pasta, stale bread or toast is a fantastic idea for worm chow!! I'll have to add some to my next batch!! Thanks so much for watching & for your tips!!🪱🪱🪱
I was impressed by that worm video of the citrus fruit, I've found if you chop up a pile of banana peels finely they devour them in no time, it'll be interesting to see what happens with your potato and orange peel.
That was a pretty cool video!! I'll have to chop up a banana peel to give it a try...they are starting to pile up on me and I need to get rid of them faster!! I'm hoping the potato goes quick, the alternative is a smelly situation!! I should have cut it up but I didn't want to smell anymore of it before I froze it! Thanks for the banana peel tip and thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I did!! That was a good example of overfeeding and lack of oxygen through a bin. I was surprised at how quickly they went from being pretty active to dead. With smaller bins (this was a very tall thin container) the worms have nowhere to go when conditions are bad. This also shows why I aerate my bins, trying to prevent any pockets of overfeeding or fermenting conditions. I'm so glad they posted that video as well so we all can learn!!
👍 I'm glad they posted it...it does help us to understand how over feeding can be very bad for a bin and how aerating a bin, especially a smaller bin is helpful to get oxygen throughout! Thanks for the comment explaining it!! And thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Love your content. Do you think you guys can put date stamps on the vids so we have some sort of idea how far apart these video series are to track worm bin progression?
Thank you so much!! I wish YT would leave a time stamp on the videos other than 1 year, 2 year as they get older! The VermiHut was started 25 months ago with an average of 9 days between each feeding/video. The Outdoor Worm Bin was started 24 months a go with and average of about 10 days between each feeding and the Tiny Worm Bin is continually restarted about every 5 months with an average of about 8 days between each feeding. The video playlists are in reverse chronological order with the newest video being on top. A time stamp would be helpful...I just need to make sure it won't affect the algorithm for YT sharing my videos since the videos don't depend on time. Thanks so much for asking a great question and thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Good to get confirmation from a fellow VermiHut owner!! I’m not a fan of adding meat either…even though I know they would eat it as well in moderation🤮Thanks so much for stopping by to watch and let us know about citrus in your bin!!🪱🪱🪱
I have found the best thing to do to remove heat is to spread out the feeding and use less food and at the same time put frozen water bottles on the top surface to cool down the bin. Once you have it cool, then work on using more bedding and less food scraps and monitor the temperature to see if you may need to bring it inside your home where it is cooler if this is an outdoor bin. Here is a video that may help: th-cam.com/video/PHYQpEmKjnU/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
I think blending the food is a good idea in small quantities or spread out. Sometimes blended food put in a small area or in a pile can prevent worms from getting into the center of the pile and it may ferment or mat down with the bedding. If spread out and given in small quantities, kinda of how I spread my amendments, I think it is a great way to feed...As my populations have grown, I've become a more lazy worm farmer and just freeze the foods and chuck it in whole into my worm bins!! I hope this helps!! Thanks for asking a great question!! And thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Great question!! I think it is a little bit of both. I have lights close to the bins when I’m filming and they do look lighter with my 2 indoor bins compared to my outdoor bin which receives the same type bedding. But when I add the castings to my storage container all the castings look the same color and darker than they appear on video. I’ve used leaves & compost in my bins in the past and haven’t noticed too much difference if any but I bet the color of the bedding could have an affect! Great question!! Thanks for asking and thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
An update on the "Two Worm Bin": 02-18-23 No inventory was taken of the bin. About a teaspoon of juice pulp and an a small amount of water was added to the bin to provide food and to bring the contents of the bin up to 75 to 80% moisture level. I estimate it was around 70% moisture level before the addition of water. None of the last feeding was evident when checked. 02/25/23 Inventory of the bin was done. The results were: 16 Adult worms (increase of 6 since last counting) 61 non adult worms (there were 42 during last count, an increase of 19 or 1.35 worms per day crawled out of the mature cocoons in the last 14 days) 92 cocoons were observed (an increase of 47 so on average sightly more than 3.3 cocoons per day from the 10 adult worms and the worms [6] that became adults over the last 14 days. A feeding of about one tablespoon of juice pulp was provided. There was very little recognizable food left in the bin from the last feeding 7 days ago. The mite population was greatly reduced as there were no noticeable colonies of them anywhere in the bin. Maybe 9 or 10 were observed singly during the counting process. One wisp was in the process of emerging from a cocoon during the count it was not counted as a non adult worm as it had not completely emerged from the cocoon. A very light misting of water was added to the top of the contents of the bin when it was rebuilt to maintain about 75 to 80% moisture until the next check in and feeding.
Oh wow you caught a worm in the act of emerging from its cocoon!! That is a a great uptick in cocoon production!! I wonder how steep the population curve will get as they keep doubling in adult worm population??!? So far the 2 have doubled three time with 4x and 5x right around the corner if we are just counting adult worms!! Fascinating experiment, especially because of your documentation and data!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost thanks Patrick. Maybe someone who is thinking they lost their whole bin might be encouraged to keep worming on with the cocoons that are left and just adjust for whatever went wrong. Last week I started a one cocoon experiment. If two or more wiggglers crawl out of one of the two (in separate containers) I am going to use those two (or more) as a starting point for another bin.
@@cramersbackyard9634 That is very true!! If there are cocoons and the conditions are fixed, the bin should come back from the dead!! Your one cocoon experiment should be very interesting if 2 worms emerge!!
Oyster shells is a fantastic alternative for grit!! If I had access to some I'd add some to my bins. I have a lot of egg shells so I give them a lot of grit to get rid of it. If I had limited access I would give just a little bit. Thanks so much for watching and for the great question!!🪱🪱🪱
Another great question!! I fed my worms a little bit of pickled okra, but I rinsed it with water for a while to get rid of as much of the vinegar odor as possible. I would try it in very small quantities first and work your way up to more if the worms are consuming it with no issues. I hope this helps!!! Thanks for the great question & for stopping by to watch again!!🪱🪱🪱
Awesome!!! I'm so excited for you!! Be sure to keep the lid off (if you have one) and a light from a room on it while the lid is off even at night for about 48 hours. You can always look at the top of the bin 😀 But I would not dig into the bin until day 5 when you check to see if they have eaten any food. Remember that less food is better and more bedding is better for the first month. The hardest thing to do with a new bin is to leave it alone and not look at the worms 5 times a day 😂🤣😂 What we want now is for them to get used to their new home and know there is no danger!! Good luck!!🪱🪱🪱
I've always taken those amazon black tape things off because I didn't think they were compostable and they're not too hard to peel off 🤔Citrus and breads work great in the worm bins 👍
Awesome to hear about the citrus and bread in your bins!! It was a leap of faith the first time I tried it after reading all the other stuff about it, but it turned out well for us both!! My shredder obliterates cardboard so I occasionally took the lazy route and sent it though with the tape...until I saw Sandra's video!! I was even saving some to do a test because I wasn't completely sure!! Thanks so much for watching & for letting us know how well your bins take care of citrus and bread!!🪱🪱🪱
It is amazing!! There are 4 trays total on it right now with about 80% on the top feeding tray and another 20% spread between the bottom 3. Thanks so much for dropping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
I started my VermiHut with 2000 worms more than 2 years ago. It populated pretty quickly as I kept adding trays and probably got to its current population within 6-8 months. I wold say 500 worms or 1000 is sufficient but I like to start with more worms so it is easier to see if they are consuming all the food I feed them and it is easier to avoid over feeding. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for asking a great question and thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
@@Vermicompost I will be making a CFT from a large wheelie bin, but I'm awaiting the warmer weather before starting to set it up. After watching your vermi hut and the way you run it I have purchased one and going to get it up and running indoors and get a start before the weather warms up. 👍👍
That CFT is gonna be great!! The VermiHut has been a great experience in every way for me...and my wife lets me keep it indoors!! It has become a conveyor belt of worm castings for me!! I'm so glad you're getting an early start with one!!!
Excellent to hear!! Thanks so much for watching!!!🪱🪱🪱
A whole rotten potatoe does take some time to finish, after week when you check in you will definetaly know the potatoe is still there, or maybe as that worm hut has a good number of worms in there
Curious to see what happens with the potato. I fed 2 baked potatoes to my bin last night and I'm looking forward to see how the worms like them. They were just baked, not oiled and nothing else on them.
Your two baked potatoes and my one frozen non baked potato will make for a good experiment!! I’ll be sure to update the progress in my bin and I’d love to hear about the progress with yours as we go along!! Thanks so much for watching and letting us know about the potatoes in your bin!!🪱🪱🪱

Hi buddy I like your videos but do you know that there can be a wealth of chemicals present in cardboard Inc Diisobutyl Phthalate and plastering chemicals. If you put this compost into your veg garden you will have plants that have unwanted bio chemicals in them. Just a thought and reason why I never use newspapers or cardboard in composting. There is a factory here in the UK that I used to work for called Smurfit cappa that makes paper and cardboard, back then I was a gregories truck driver whilst studying at uni for my Science degree .. the leachate or worm juice will also contain chemical compounds too which I think people should become more aware of before putting onto their garden. Smurfit cappa has a website so I'm sure you could email them for info too. Kind regards buddy great videos too really enjoy watching :) and have subscribed 😊
Thanks for all the great information!! It seems like phthalates are everywhere in everything we touch! I'm not sure how it is in the UK, but here so much of our produce is shipped in cardboard boxes and containers...and it seems like recycled cardboard has the most presence of phthalates to include DIBP as they use it to "glue" the material back together...we're trying to save the earth by recycling and were getting more exposed to man made chemicals in the process!! I wonder if there has been studies specifically on phthalates and remediation with worms? I know earthworms have been used to decontaminate soils here in the US, but you definitely have me wondering more!! It seems the UK may be ahead of our Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as they have a general interest/warning with it but aren't willing to give any causal warnings about it. Thanks so much for all the great information, I Majored in Biology for my undergraduate degree so this is right up my ally to explore!! Welcome to my channel, I'm so glad you are enjoying my videos!!🪱🪱🪱
Fantastic to hear!! I'm hoping I didn't overfeed them with this whole potato!! I lifted the lid for my first check after a couple of days, and so far so good, no smell!!! Thanks so much for watching Whytedavy!!🪱🪱🪱
My worms (ANCs)love avocado peels and sweet potato peels. They also eat bits of boiled corn. I'm trying tomatoes now,I just put some agricultural lime on the tomatoes to neutralize things a bit. BTW I really like your approach, I like burrowing into the worm bin to check on my worms to see how they're going... I'm not a big fan of leaving them alone for weeks on end. If you have access to rice bran/rice hulls, they also make good bedding, they make the worm bin airy and fluffy.
Sounds like your ANCs are getting a great diet!! I think aerating the bin definitely helps things out by preventing noxious gasses from building up accidentally & helps us to evaluate how the worms and bin are doing!! Bins can really get matted down as well so air and fluff is the way for me!! Thanks so much for sharing how you run your bins with us!! If I can get my hands on some rice bran/rice hulls I'll give it a try!! Thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Wax worms will eat the tape. Especially if you have mushroom fungus mixed in the bin
Look 👀. This guy in Costa Rica explains the soldier fly system
th-cam.com/video/87e7VdYSGLU/w-d-xo.html
I believe the same thing can be done with plastics. But old bee wax has more nutrients than plain plastic. Mushrooms grow on cellulose and can also break down plastic.
Am enclosed system would allow you to collect the wax worms for chicken feed. Like soldier fly.
So that means we can compost everything.
1. Wax worms for plastic
2. Mushrooms for plastic and wood
3. Soldier flies for the stinky food waste like meat
4. Vinegar for the bones the soldier flies won’t eat, which can be feed back to plants
5. Vermipost for fresh greens and leaves
6. Macrobiotic heat based composting for all the above to finish it. As the compost pile normally heats to 160 degrees, you can run a water hose through it and use that heat to warm greenhouse in winter.
I am studying these systems to save the world. 😊
Because we can redesign urban housing.
The one in Chicago makes 15,000 kilowatt hours per year just on wind 🌬
👀 th-cam.com/video/chpkCDQ6s2Q/w-d-xo.html
It has down pipe water turbines built into rain harvesting system. Similar to the ones in Portland Oregon that power half the city.
👀 th-cam.com/video/NO45Sj6hNB0/w-d-xo.html
Every 50 feet of pipe produces 1,100 MEGA.
I also believe it makes ending homelessness profitable, as building produces excess energy and pay for h to themselves
If we are to save the world we must end homelessness as that is the desperation that feeds the greed that raids our environment.
The garden balconies are managed by an app. Like Siri. It runs the sprinklers or sprays organic pesticides and open close the windows.
Composting is the last part to this puzzle and “ can’t wait to test out wax worms 🪱 “
Oh toilets are incinerator toilets with wet and dry filters on exhaust. New York spends billions cleaning toilet water so people can drink it safely. Let’s just say Taiwan save a crap 💩 ton of money by not creating sewer water; and people drink water filter by the sky and sun itself. Lovely 🥰
If I were Wonder Woman I would have fixed everything for you already. But it’s just my icon. 😞
I wish people would talk about these things more, that’s when we can think about changing things.

That wad of worms from the inside of the avocado shell was so cool. The cuc-juice-cicle was pretty neat too!
That cuc-juice-cicle formed when I took the ziplock bag it was slowly rotting in and threw it in the freezer...I was gonna let it thaw out again, but it looked too cool...and I didn't want a mess!!

That was a brilliant experiment and you did it for so long that there was no doubt!! I occasionally let some tape slip through in my shredder so I'm glad you taught us all the worms do not eat it!! Hi Patrick great video as always. I think they will deal with the potato.👍🏻🤠💪💗🥔
Potato??? It's closer to Vodka 🤣

H in you guys, I add lots of potato peelings to my worm bins, they seem to like it.

One thing I noticed in my first two month old worm bin from putting in half a juiced lemon is 1. the worms didn’t go for it quickly compared to the other things and 2. the fruit fly larvae seem to love it 😨
But it is disappearing for sure!
I put bread, citrus and potatoes all the time in my bin and my worms love it
So great to hear that your worms love it!! Hopefully I didn't over do it with the whole potato!!
@@Vermicompost Did you watch the video where all her worms died?
@@graemedevine9651 that unfortunate die off occurred before the citrus test and it seemed to be due to overfeeding
I’m going to keep my eye on that potato.
So far, so good...no smell!! Thanks for stopping by Joe!!🪱🪱🪱
So true and I have fed a lot of citrus to my worms and they are fine the only thing I would not put in my bin is meat
Good to get confirmation from a fellow VermiHut owner!! I’m not a fan of adding meat either…even though I know they would eat it as well in moderation🤮Thanks so much for stopping by to watch and let us know about citrus in your bin!!🪱🪱🪱
What you do for heat remove from vermibed
I have found the best thing to do to remove heat is to spread out the feeding and use less food and at the same time put frozen water bottles on the top surface to cool down the bin. Once you have it cool, then work on using more bedding and less food scraps and monitor the temperature to see if you may need to bring it inside your home where it is cooler if this is an outdoor bin. Here is a video that may help: th-cam.com/video/PHYQpEmKjnU/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
What do you think about blending the worm food?
I think blending the food is a good idea in small quantities or spread out. Sometimes blended food put in a small area or in a pile can prevent worms from getting into the center of the pile and it may ferment or mat down with the bedding. If spread out and given in small quantities, kinda of how I spread my amendments, I think it is a great way to feed...As my populations have grown, I've become a more lazy worm farmer and just freeze the foods and chuck it in whole into my worm bins!! I hope this helps!! Thanks for asking a great question!! And thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
Your casting always seem so light in color. Is that from the light or from all the cardboard?
Great question!! I think it is a little bit of both. I have lights close to the bins when I’m filming and they do look lighter with my 2 indoor bins compared to my outdoor bin which receives the same type bedding. But when I add the castings to my storage container all the castings look the same color and darker than they appear on video. I’ve used leaves & compost in my bins in the past and haven’t noticed too much difference if any but I bet the color of the bedding could have an affect! Great question!! Thanks for asking and thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
An update on the "Two Worm Bin":
02-18-23
No inventory was taken of the bin. About a teaspoon of juice pulp and an a small amount of water was added to the bin to provide food and to bring the contents of the bin up to 75 to 80% moisture level. I estimate it was around 70% moisture level before the addition of water. None of the last feeding was evident when checked.
02/25/23
Inventory of the bin was done. The results were:
16 Adult worms (increase of 6 since last counting)
61 non adult worms (there were 42 during last count, an increase of 19 or 1.35 worms per day crawled out of the mature cocoons in the last 14 days)
92 cocoons were observed (an increase of 47 so on average sightly more than 3.3 cocoons per day from the 10 adult worms and the worms [6] that became adults over the last 14 days.
Can oyster shells be ground instead of egg shells?
Oyster shells is a fantastic alternative for grit!! If I had access to some I'd add some to my bins. I have a lot of egg shells so I give them a lot of grit to get rid of it. If I had limited access I would give just a little bit. Thanks so much for watching and for the great question!!🪱🪱🪱
I have a question, I made pickled vegetables and can I feed these leftovers to worms?
Another great question!! I fed my worms a little bit of pickled okra, but I rinsed it with water for a while to get rid of as much of the vinegar odor as possible. I would try it in very small quantities first and work your way up to more if the worms are consuming it with no issues. I hope this helps!!! Thanks for the great question & for stopping by to watch again!!🪱🪱🪱
The worms arrived today, I gave them food and when can I look at them?

When first starting your vermi hut with a single tray, how many worms did yo start with?
I started my VermiHut with 2000 worms more than 2 years ago. It populated pretty quickly as I kept adding trays and probably got to its current population within 6-8 months. I wold say 500 worms or 1000 is sufficient but I like to start with more worms so it is easier to see if they are consuming all the food I feed them and it is easier to avoid over feeding. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for asking a great question and thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Am I seeing things or is there something printed on the newspaper about “women’s worms”???!!!
😂🤣😂 I just opened the lid and checked it...It says Women's Work...But that would have been funny if it said Women's Worms!! So I guess the answer is yes, you are seeing things😁 Thanks for dropping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱
I fed my worms a rotten raw potato and the loved it. It was neat to see them burrow through it. 🪱
That is fantastic to hear!! This was raw as well, just frozen. I lifted the lid today and no smell!! I’m so glad to hear it worked out so well in your bin!! Thanks so much for watching!!!🪱🪱🪱
