Tugs, dredgers continue work to refloat ship blocking Suez Canal

  • Suez Canal salvage teams were alternating between dredging and tugging on Sunday to dislodge a massive container ship blocking the busy waterway, but two sources said efforts had been complicated by rock under the ship’s bow.
    Dredgers working to dislodge the stranded vessel have so far shifted 27,000 cubic metres (954,000 cubic feet) of sand, to a depth of 18 metres (59 feet), and efforts would continue around the clock, wind conditions and tides permitting, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said in a statement.
    Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered preparations for the possible removal of some of the ship’s cargo to help refloat it, SCA Chairman Osama Rabie told Egypt’s Extra News.
    Any operation to lighten the ship’s load would not start before Monday, an SCA source said.
    Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reports.

    My husband wants to contribute. He says to use directional drills to attach airbags (flotation devices) under the front of the bow halfway under the water level. Remove the load off the bow. Use the container ships waiting on the North and South of the ship to connect to the ship, stern and bow, with cable. Tie off. At least twelve container ships back-to-back and hooked together with 100 feet of cable between each ship. Then have a tug-of-war, pulling the opposite direction. That should straighten it out and pull it free.

    • @mabutton7208

      Get an aircraft carrier in there with one of those giant Navy ships hook the lines up to a Navy ship and aircraft carrier

    • @EulerJr_
      @EulerJr_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. Of course it’s heavy and all (220,000 Metric tones+) but since it’s on water you don’t need to pull a close to that weight. And it’s not like half the ship is stuck on land either.
      As you say, some big machinery and cables could fix it. OR build some type of improvised winch. some construction/mining type winches can pull 1000’s of tonnes. But there are probably winches that can pull way more, theoretically you can build any motor/winch with infinite torque.
      They should easily be able to fix this. And they don’t seem to want to fix it soon either, in the live streams and photos/videos hardly anything is done.

    MY VISION - Need about 10 tugboats positioned on both ends of ship on either sides, to dislodge this mammoth and right it up. This can be achieved by simultaneously pushing the tail part of it in one direction and the front in the other direction towards the middle of the waterway.
    How much sand has accumulated in the canal?, they would need reconnaissance divers to verify that the bottom is clear.

    • @medicbabe2ID
      @medicbabe2ID 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bow is buried at least 15 meters deep in the sand. "Your vision" needs several thousand cubic meters of sand moved before it is feasible.

      That's what they are trying to do, basically. They need more pulling power, I think they are waiting now for more strong tugboats to arrive. If more than 10% of the weight is sitting on sand/mud, it's hopeless. That's why they were dredging and excavating all they could reach.

    I heard a Dutch salvage expert explaining that unloading the ship while the bow and stern are aground and the center afloat could seriously flex or crack the hull. This mess is a political disaster for the president of Egypt who just wants it done. Let’s hope they don’t make it worse in the rush.

      depends on in what order you take the weight off; if you unload the middle too the Weight distribution does not change but the total weight does.

      Dutch are not interested in politics, results count, no nonsense. Laws Of Physics versus Laws Of Politics: Laws Of Physics act the same in known Universe, good boy / bad boy: if jump from a cliff both drop. Politics deals great deal with illusions, but physical laws do not bend to political correctness.

      @@JimmyTownmouse its how the weight is devided. the ship (like any other) is designed to be supported by water,(lifted up over the full lenkt) not to to be suspended at the ends only If they only take weight off at the ends the weight in the middle could bend the ship

    I read that no ship in the line is towable which made me wonder why that is important. Then I found that if a ship is towable it can be a anchor point to assist in pulling the Evergreen off the sand. Maybe I don't understand but would the anchors sever the same purpose, but modern ships are so automated that old fashions strength isn't important. They pulling is a few feet at every high tide only now.
