    So, at least in Legends, the way shields work is a dual system. Ships have both energy shields and particle shields. Energy shields protect against harmful radiation and energy blasts such as from a laser or turbolaser. Particle shields protect against solid objects (solid as in their physical state). Energy shields are pretty much always set to full strength because the majority of weapon systems are energy based. Particle shields on the other hand are usually set to low in order to protect against micro asteroids and small debris. The only way to stop a larger object (such as a proton torpedo or an out of control A-wing) is to turn up the particle shields to full or almost full strength. However, this prevents a ship from being able to fire back at the enemy or launch/retrieve any spacecraft.
    Ions are charged particles; charged being the key word. The damage they inflict comes not from their impact but from the transfer of energy from particle to particle. Ion weapons essentially overcharge the systems of an enemy ship, causing them to fail and shut down. This makes them great for disabling shields and then possibly the ship.

    • @maxpower19711
      @maxpower19711 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nukes cause EMPs , and the effects of Ion cannons is star wars mirrors that of and EMP (electromagnetic pulse). Since an EMP is electromagnetic radiation, if ray shields could stop it, then they would block all light and make it impossible to see out of the ship. The EMP and the immense blast caused by nukes would therefore make them extremely effective against ships in star wars

    The thing is, the Empire could afford to lose a few ISD's after all they had - what - 25,000? The Rebellion didn't have that kind of Firepower. But yeah, they didn't put to much thought into it regarding fleet to fleet action. However that wasn't really their primary task. They were really mobile bases for enforcing Imperial authority on world.
    If only they hadn't built those bloody Death Star folly's. The Rebels would never had such great victories. Prior to this, Fleet to Fleet actions would be for the Rebels a even greater disaster due to a lack of numbers.

      AS he said, the mission changed from war to peace keeping. Look at the police and look at the mil. who has the more firepower (raw) and who has the (more refined) firepower)? The venator was a war ship (but still cinematic in nature and had the same faults). But, it had fighters. It was easy to build and did serve as an assault ship. The empire now had an empire to run/protect/peace keep. Yes, the Empire should have kept the Venator and done something to it. But, (as we see with Hitler) dictators rarely see above their own meglamania and rarely allow any one else to challenge their meglomania.

    • @DIEGhostfish
      @DIEGhostfish 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's "Visible" but that bulge is almost all armor, and by sheer heat and electricity emissions there's no way to hide a reactor's general location. MOST of the reactor's dead center of the ship but that's just not quite enough space so having a piece of it that runs close to the surface covered in extra armor is a safer bet.

    • @flare9757
      @flare9757 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Empire's mistake was quantity over quality(in regards to fighters).

    • @lancer737
      @lancer737 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only thing lacking is defensive capabilities overall. Overall they have better maneuverability, better speed and acceleration, the best targeting computers, best ecm and ECM. Firepower, overall, also goes to the TIES. Individually the A-Wing had the best speed, acceleration, and ECM. The TIE Interceptor had the best maneuverability, super coustomability that allowed it have better engines and shields, and a hyper drive, and projectile launchers, and multiple beam weapons and advanced tactical jammers. TIE Interceptors also had the most advanced targeting computers and possibly ECCM.
      Because of its capabilities after being nodded the TIE Interceptor is the best tied with the Defender. MOdding might feel cheap but most other fighters, including Wing Fighters, don't appear to be anywhere near as easy to moderate nor are shown be as dramatically molded, possibly because of weight or energy requirements and so on.

    • @Appletank8
      @Appletank8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they wanted more quantity, maybe they shouldn't have made the hangers smaller.

    • @wildside316
      @wildside316 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lancer737 The TIEs that *have* shields are great. But it seems(and Star Wars: Empire at War can confirm this, iirc), the Empire puts more into sheer volume of fighters. They flood the field with glass cannons(typical, *basic* fighters). Reminds me of Matrix Revolutions, the swarming machines. Yeah, you'll have the occasional modified interceptor or few, but it's most often the un-shielded(or weak-shielded by comparison to X-Wings, again, iirc).
      But, I could be wrong☺.

    • @lancer737
      @lancer737 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wildside316 That's a game mechanic though. Most engagements in the stories and movies, have TIE Fighters fighting in equal or outnumbered conflicts. In ep 4 it was 9 TIEs vs over 30 wing fighters. In Return of the Jedi the Rebels had around 6 mon cal cruisers, each carries 120 wing fighters. Being unfinished, I doubt the Death Star 2 had anywhere near a full compliment, they had less than 2,400 TIEs at the battle with lots being assigned to protect all the SD which were not fighting till they were forced into point blank range.

  • @18videowatcher41
    @18videowatcher41 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Haven't finished watching the video yet, but I already agree with you regarding the bridge and the shield generators. I can actually think of a relatively easy way to destroy an Imperial Class Star Destroyer. Exploit their lack of point-defense and the inferiority of the TIE fighter to the X-Wing and A-Wing. Attack with a fleet of fighter and bombers. Have the fighters engage the TIE fighters, and have the bombers target the reactor bulge on the ventral surface of the ship with heir proton torpedoes and concussion missiles.
    Edit: Finished watching the video. I enjoyed it, and think you made valid points. I now have some ideas regarding how to improve the Imperial Class Star Destroyer. In no particular order:
    -Remove the entire tower structure on which the bridge is located.
    -Relocate the bridge to a more well protected central area within the ship.
    -Eliminate the ventral reactor bulge, increasing the overall size of the ship if necessary.
    -Add a number of redundant shield generators in multiple locations.
    -Add a comprehensive point defense network.
    -Shield the ship against Ion weapons.
    -If at all possible, have the same armament on the ventral surface of the ship, as on the dorsal surface. If nothing else, have the point defenses extend to the ventral surface.
    -And last but not least, improve the godawful TIE fighters!
    Even after all these potential improvements, I also believe that the Imperial Star Destroyer should be deployed with an escort fleet, for maximum flexibility.

    2:25 the Tarkin Doctrine was really bad, as loads of excellently designed clone wars republic vehicles eg: ARC 170s or LAAT Gunships, were replaced by less capable vehicles eg: TIE Fighters or Imperial Shuttles. Also why does no capital ship designer never learn to change the position of the bridge as almost each era in both Canon and Legends has an example of a capital ship having its bridge shot out or crashed into, most recent in The Last Jedi which resulted the entire Resistance fleet being commanded (and destroyed) by Vice Admiral Purple Hair Holdo

Shock and awe, might makes right, etc. Sure 70 fighters isn't much but against two (maximum) squadrons of Alliance fighters not to mention the heavy city devastating turbo lasers, the demoralizing power of the ISD alone makes up for its flaws in a way.

    You are only referring to the canon sources. In the legends sources, books, graphic novels, and video games, and not forgetting the Imperial Source Book for West End Games, naval deployments and fleets were listed in exact detail. The Imperial Navy has hundreds of thousands of star-ships, with about half being front-line combat vessels.
    There were many support ships, including fleet carriers, resupply and reinforcement ships, and then there were the escorts, like the Carrack-class cruiser, or the Lancer-class frigate, or the interdictor cruisers!
    Star destroyers also carried large troop transports, that could hold 500 men each, as well as massive transport barges for deploying walkers and ground attack speeders.
    In many of these other sources, star destroyers were designed to take punishment, while essentially duelling it out in a 'broadside' style engagement. To this end, they had powerful tractor beams that would hold a target in place, allowing the heavy turbolasers and ion cannons to batter it until it surrendured, or was outright destroyed.
    The ISD also has multiple back-up generators for the shields, weapons and deflectors. Mentioned a few times is the life support and propulsion systems, which are priority systems and always protected.

    After playing Star Wars: Squadrons, I now understand the reasoning behind the exposed bridge on Star Destroyers. When attacking a Star Destroyer as a small fighter, you want to fly underneath the shields to do damage to the hull directly. This is extremely easy to do to the main hull because it’s completely flat, apart from the cannons. If the bridge was on the main lower hull, it would be easy to shoot because all you have to do is fly in a straight line whilst firing your lasers at the giant metal pizza right underneath you. However, when the hull is placed in the way it is on the Imperial Star Destroyer, it’s extremely difficult to fly underneath the shields protecting it. Once the shields go down is when the exposed bridge becomes an issue.

    First off Imperial Star Destroyer has one shield Dome, the Dome on the right is Communications dome. Second depending on what class of Star Destroyer it have anywhere from 64 to 108 Point defense weapons, placed across that entire side Ridge. The weapons you mentioned are all for shipt to ship combat. The underside Hangar Bay is shielded if its own personal Shield, with 8 Defence Blaster cannons in three front and back tractor beams. With six more tractor beams up front. Third eye on weapons are made to bypass Shields, armor really can't do much against ion weapons, which are designed to disable, scramble the circuits, and shut down mechanical systems, including droids. A Jawa shut R2 what the ion blaster in New Hope on tanooine.

    Now that you mention it imperial Star Destroyers do have more in common with WW1 battleships than WW2 battleships.
    Both ISDs and WW1 BBs had lots of massive cannons, were slow, had large crews, built to only fight other capital ships, everybody wanted one, had huge weaknesses that could be seen from miles away, and neither had large numbers of AA cannons.

    Considering it is suppose to lack point defense options, that is the VERY thing that would always kick my butt in games like Rebel Strike or Rogue Squadron, heck, even the 2005 Battlefront 2. Like excuse me Mr. The Star Destroyer could you not?
    Great video. Would love to see one on the Venator and/or Accalamator since they are of the same line of ship.

  • @177SCmaro
    @177SCmaro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another flaw the ISD has is the lack of superfireing positioning of its main guns i.e. it would have to tip its bow down quite a bit to focus all its guns on either side of the superstructure forward which would render all of its ventral and most of its side guns usless.
    A better design would be to place all the main guns in a central row along the dorsal and ventral hull in superfiring positions so the could fire on either side, all forward, and some "over the shoulder", basically design it more like an actual battleship.
    Then put all you smaller guns and point defense on either "wing" of the triangle to protect the ship from smaller threats.
    Combine this with escorts and fighters and you've got one hell of a defensive screen for your capital ships.
    A flawed but fixable ship design.

    I agree with the point of lack of short-range weaponry, but there's an important note to be made: while the Imperial Navy's mission was peacekeeping, the ISD's purpose was force projection. A significant portion of its design favoured raw intimidation over tactical efficiency, so carrying enough firepower to level a city from high orbit is a natural extension of that.
