I used to have a fear of schizophrenia theme with my OCD. Your channel and talking to others has made me realize it would be ok if I ever fell into psychosis and destigmatized psychotic disorders. I no longer have this theme now :)

The biggest issue with mental health programs is the need for a diagnosis. If I had money for six months of a therapist faffing around, I wouldn't need to chase other treatment options. Shoutout to this lady for using a symptom based model and treating her patients for longer than like, two weeks

I had no idea that there was a prodrome to psychosis. It makes sense because I have chronic migraine and I can catch them in the prodrome phase up to 8 hours before the pain starts. The brain is such a fascinating thing!

Yes it often lasts longer then the psychotic episode itself. Especially first episode. Some people basically live in the prodromal phase and cycle back and forth from that to what they call psychosis.

Hey Lauren, good to 👀see you again! I have the same diagnosis as you. I am finding it very hard to get up after sleep. Not always, though. I feel dark and depressed, very negative, mostly in my sleep, though my sleep is relaxing. I've experienced such major losses in myself! I have a powerful cognitive ability, but it burns out much quicker than normal. My prescriber thinks I'm just fine, and I could be one of her sickest patients, it's just I'm very intelligent and a superb actor. It's hard getting help when you sound good describing your psychosis. I talk to my therapist tomorrow. And I am honest.

One thing is the lack of treatment, IE people who are first experiancing symptoms will often have no connections and not have even the foggiest idea on where to go for help. I think this program is a step in the right direction towards helping those people, but there are two issues that I am not sure are being addressed. Please be advised that I am in the US so these may differ in Canada.
    1. Finding providers for treatment. Not only is insurance a big hurdle in the US, but I find that a lot of therapists offices and mental health treatment centers don't really advertize themselves. The first one I went to, didn't really even have a sign outside when I started. They were not some small or new office either. Eventually, A sign was put on the building and I think a smaller one in the parking lot, but both are still pretty easy to miss if you aren't looking for them. There are no billboards on the roads, no advertisements on TV, and vertually no social media advertizing of these specific offices either. I think more advertizing like this would help people who have basically no connection whatsoever to anyone who knows that these places even exist, and who may be experiancing symptoms find treatment much faster than hoping the person eventually finds your number and calls your office. Basically in my experiance a lot of providers rely on word of mouth for advertizing. If you don't already have some connection to or experiance with these places, that word of mouth isn't likely to reach you. You just aren't in the right circles, and you should not need to be.
    2. The second issue is that waiting list. Often, providers once found, are either not accepting any new patients at all or have serious wait lists for those needing a first appointment. Part of the reason for this is how overworked providers already are. There are a lot of people that need help, and no where near enough providers to help them. A therapist might not get to spend longer than an hour or even 30 min with a patient because they may need to see 14 other patients that same day. For psychiatrists its worse. A common negative steriotype is "pill pusher" basically. And thats because when you go into the psychiatrists office, you basically say high, yes if your meds have been helping, no if they have not, and then you walk out with either a renewal of the same perscription or a new one. Many offices have more therapists than psychiatrists and a few might even share psychiatrists with another office a little further away via ITV or zoom or the like. Not only that, but often times that first appointment isn't just an hour in length. There are histories that need to be taken and forms upon forms that need to be filled out by all parties involved, on top of the ooodles of questions that need to be asked, some with no real solid answer. These first appointments are called assesments for a reason and can last a few hours sometimes. That means the person doing that assessment can't see as many other patients that day. Some offices hire therapists more or less to mainly do the "intake assessments" because of this (although that therapist might also see a smaller number of "regular" patients outside of doing those assessments).
All of this leads to a very congested system where a person who is newly experiancing symptoms not only has trouble finding the help they need, but also has trouble actually getting it once they find it. These 2 issues are a big reason that the time between when a person first experiances, notices, or otherwise develops symptoms and the time they actually start recieving help and care for those symtoms is a YEAR AND A HALF. I had my fan running durring this video right in front of me, so maybe I just did not hear, but I don't feel like these two issues I stated above were really addressed all that much? I know there was talk about reducing that wait time in this video, but I feel like it was more along the lines of "we are going to reduce that wait time by treating these patients based on symptoms, streamlining their care a bit more, and giving them more control over their treatment plan" rather than "this is how we are going to help these people find us in the first place and get them the care they need faster." I think it helps that this person was running a program on a college campus, as that is where/when a lot of these symptoms can develop in a person, so a lot of her clientele might already have some connection and know that those services are available if needed since college campuses are much smaller and word of mouth tends to be much more effective, especially given that some professors may be involved and many students will have freinds that utilize those services, on top of fairs or other events where advertizing that these services exist might be done. But, what about those in the rest of the community? Those teens or 20 somethings not planning to attend college who develop symptoms? That may have been a bit beyond the scope of this interview, but still. I am not sure if this is going to be effectivew at reducing that year and a half for a lot of people who are "first timers."
I know from experiance too. I first started having symptoms in november of 2011, they first got serious in like March of 2012. I was kicked out of college in April 2012 because of them. I did not get help until October of that year. Mostly because I had no clue where to even look for said help, and neither did anyone else. My mom (whom I was living with at the time) was basically my champion, but she really had no clue where to look either. By the time we found and called a place that could help us, they had a 6 month wait list full of people who probvably needed help about as much as I did, Thats terrible. And I hope it gets fixed soon.

i'm having an intake for such a program thursday next week. due to having growing issues that could be related to a psychotic disorder. i go to a psychologist once per week (at the moment twice due to things getting worse) which was originally for different issues. but stuff started happening and now life is a real mess. at first i just thought stuff felt weird but that can happen sometimes, then a few months later i started seeing things, which i told my psychologist of course. but at that point the seeing things wasn't really at a convincing point, not like how it is now. about an hour ago i thought someone had knocked on my door, but everyone was downstairs. that kind of stuff is just getting more and more frequent and just feels more and more real. i hope they can prevent it whatever it would be specifically so i can do work and school again.
in my family all i know of running mental illness is depression (or maybe bipolar, but all i know what that they used antidepressants), which i know i've got too, but never really thought about my past depressions until recently. but the thing is how different they were, because while my depressions did sometimes make it hard to work, i never had hallucinations during them that i know of. and just recently i figured out that the things going on in my head (i don't know what to call them) aren't really intrusive thoughts because apparently intrusive thoughts cannot talk. so everything is getting more and more complicated.

Can you do a video about "sluggish schizophrenia". it is when the soviets diagnosed people that they thought were threatening the security of the country. i think its an important thing to talk about too because of how governments can just abuse people by misdiagnosing them with fake or real disorders and the consequences of it to society and to the field of psychology as a whole and plus i think its fun to discuss history anyway : )

A lot of talk to get people to be drug dependent as soon as possible. Then again, some people do need intervention as soon as possible, for sure. I just want people to know how to be free from the symptoms by addressing the cause of schizophrenia. Yes, I said it. I know what is causing schizophrenia because I had it and I no longer have any of the symptoms. The delusions themselves are the cause of schizophrenia as well as one of the symptoms. People didn’t suddenly begin believing strange things. They have been believing strange things for a while. The psychosis is the result of all the confusion from believing things that are not true. It’s an escalation of a sort of cognitive dissonance that may take advantage of short term memory loss where the person can’t remember if something is true or not and just believes things, anything that comes to mind. The person gets caught up in a circular line of reasoning and they can’t get out. Every stimulus takes them back into the same line of reasoning. They develop a one track mind so to speak. I had to change everything that I believed and I had to determine and hold onto what was absolutely true.
