I understand that some people might find it repetitive, but there's also a cultural explanation for that: Galician folk songs were repetitive because they weren't written, they were played and sung by ear, and having many different verses wouldn't have made it easy to remember. Also the form, the structure of the song, has many obvious similarities to the medieval Galician-Portuguese lyric, which was very much appreciated back in 15th century. I'm absolutely and irrevocably in love with Tanxugueiras #Galiciacalidade

I love Tanxugueiras. It is one of the most powerful songs of the contest. It's not a tradicional Spanish song as could be flamenco, it's just representing the galician comunity, culture and language being a clear exemple of diversity. Spain has a lot of cultures and it also has different languages which are reflected perfectly in this song. It includes the sentence of "There are no borders" in all the cooficial languages of the country such as catalan, bask, galician, asturian and also Spanish.

The type of song is based on a traditional style from Galicia, where “cantareiras” an undetermined number of girls sing together like a chorus, while playing tambourine. The dance of the boys on skirts is also a Galician type of dance called “muiñeira” that can be roughly translated as the one of the millers.

From the beginning it was between those two. Tanxu and Rigoberta. Chanel managed to create a whole euro-myth around her name, whether she wins or not. She was mind-blowing. But let’s be honest, the best song in this selection is Terra. Ay Mama is an anthem of course, the last chorus climaxes so well, brings tears. However, Tanxugueiras are the most dynamic entry that we’ve seen in ESC in so many years now. They are pure fire, bringing goosebumps even with a “confused” staging and many direction faults. If they’re to get better in all aspects and make it even more wholesome (don’t forget Olaia had covid up until Thursday), I really believe they could turn the table on Saturday night. At least I hope so. Ay Mama is the clear favourite though, Spanish people love it.

Galician culture (including language) is very similar to irish, actually Galicia and Ireland share a lot of history. We are both descedent from celts, we were both individual kingdoms once absorbed by alliances and fights with other kingdoms. We were both despised about this by central governments and both created nationalist feelings about our costumes. We are both fishers, farmers and emigrant people. We both left middle age social and land distribution very late in history due to a revolt of farmers and peasants against the nobles who possessed all the lands. Land is the soul of irish and galician people alike. We like making our life by working the land and the sea. Our language has the same ancestor than portugueese (the galician-portugueese) and it's older than spanish itself. It was used 1 thousand years ago specially for official documents in Spain. Alphonse X (the Wise) of Castilla even wrote poetry in galician-portugueese language in the 13th century, but after that it was forbidden by the kings of Castilla and Aragon when they united most of the actual territory of Spain, including Galicia. In the 40 years that dictator Franco was alive it was banned too and not recognized as official (despite Franco itself was galician), but the truth is my grandparents didn't know to speak spanish properly and they spoke galician natively, as their parents before them, and that was the case for the 99% of Galicia population. The same happens with the music you hear in that song and the dances as well. The most popular music and dancing in Galicia is the "muiñeira" (the miller) and it has that name because it was actually performed in the mills. Those mills, until not long ago, were the point of reunion of farmers. They spent hours waiting in turns to mill the grain, so they took food, wine, pipes and tambourines, and they played and danced for many hours even in the night. People invented lyrics and tunes, most of them with light erotic double meanings, because they were joyful songs, for laughing and enjoying. There are other styles, some more dramatic, some more nostalgic, but most of the contents in the lyrics talk about Galician idiosyncrasy. That music is so familiar to me, it's the music my grand grandparents danced, played and sang with pipes, tambourines and drums. The song Terra is a typical alalá for voices and tambourines alone. It is losing interest in most young people, but it is still well known by around 2 million gallician people.

Tanxugueiras is a trio formed by Aida Tarrío, and the twins Olaia and Sabela Maneiro.
They are from Galicia, northwestern Spain. They almost always sing in Galician, Galicia's own language, although they have sung in Spanish in some performances. They also play the tambourine in many of their performances.
The name of the group comes from the toponymy: it is the name given to farms where badgers (teixugos in galician language) usually roam and that in the area of Fumaces, municipality of Riós (province of Ourense) is called tanxugo instead of from teixugo (which would be the correct form) and hence "tanxugueira".
Until 2021 this group was known in the field of traditional Galician music but throughout 2021 thanks to the videos of the songs MIDAS and FIGA, in which they mix traditional and modern elements, they became famous outside that field.
In the fall of 2021, RTVE, (RadioTelevisión Española) decides to organize a music festival, the Benidorm Fest, to choose the artist and the song that will represent Spain in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest
The Eurovision-Spain portal carried out a consultation among its members and readers about possible candidates. The Tanxugueiras prevailed in the vote. This prompted them to appear at the Benidorm Fest with the song “Terra” that combines Galician folklore with electronic percussion. In December 2021, the video of the song was released and can be seen on TH-cam:Tanxugueiras - TERRA (Official Lyric Video). In this video the lyrics of the song are in Galician with subtitles in Spanish and if they do not appear they can be activated in the settings. English subtitles can also be activated.
In January 2022 the Tanxugueiras perform in the Benidorm Fest Final and come in third place. The performance can be seen on TH-cam in the video: Tanxugueiras - "Terra" Benidorm Fest 2022 The Grand Final.
The song and the staging are a tribute to an aspect of the tradition and culture of Galicia, the figure of the cantareiras, women who sing, and the pandereteiras, who play the tambourine, which enlivened the “foliada” or nocturnal meeting. of people to have fun, sing and dance.
The phrase "there are no borders" is said in several languages spoken in Spain:
    Galician: Non hai fronteiras
    Basque (Euskera): Ez dago mugarik
    Catalan: No hi ha fronteres
    Asturian (Bable): Nun hai fronteres
Castellano (often named Spanish: No hay fronteras
Sign language, in the last scene of the performance.
In the background images of the stage are scenes of women singing and playing the tambourine and of people dancing.
The song has the structure of a muñeira, (muiñeira in Galician), a traditional Galician melody in which “ailalala” and “ailalelo” abound. Olaia's “aturuxo” almost at the end of the performance is a high-pitched, loud and prolonged cry that is emitted as a sign of joy at festivals and “foliadas” or while doing some agricultural work.
The costumes of the Tanxugueiras are inspired by the traditional Galician gala dress, black with lace and jet decorations and with jet or gold jewels. The makeup simulates the drawings of the lace and the gold leaf on the hair is reminiscent of the gold of the jewels.
Aida is the one wearing the braid, Olaia is the one who throws the “aturuxo” at the end of the performance and Sabela is the one wearing the golden ornament on the left side of her hair.
I suggest you watch the official video in TH-cam:Tanxugueiras - TERRA (Official Lyric Video), in what you can activate subtitles in English, to understand the lyrics, listen to it several times, even while doing something everyday, and then watch the Benidorm Fest final performance. TH-cam: Tanxugueiras - "Terra" Benidorm Fest 2022 The Grand Final.
I list you some videos of this group published on TH-cam in which you will observe an evolution.

I want this to win because it’s something different and memorable, and it grabbed me from first listen. My absolute favourite in the competition is Blanca Paloma, but that doesn’t seem as popular with jurors or public.
It’s impossible to tell at this point what will do well with jurors at Eurovision, but I feel like Terra may do better than others for sheer being different and memorable.

Tanxugueiras (pronounced tan-shoo-ge-ee-ras) created a mix of electronic and traditional Galician music. Galicia is in NW Spain and her culture and language are not that well known even inside Spain. This type of traditional song is called an "Alalá", like the part of the chorus you sang along to 😜
It's not shown up close, and it's hard to hear, but there's also a kind of traditional scream in there too (when one of the singers goes back to the platform on the back) which is called "aturuxo".
The lyrics are a mix of traditional song and modern verses composed by them.

The music is a traditional galician rythm called Muiñeira. It's a 6/8 compass, like the irish and scottish Jig and could be performed with singing (with tambourines) or with galician bagpipes and drums. It's a dance rythm which the dancers perform in a modern version.
The golden makeup is based on the galician traditional jewelery (which they wear as well). The costumes are modern versions (with trousers instead of skirts) of traditional galician costumes.

They are from Galicia, a northern part of Spain. Galicians used to be the celts of Spain, maybe that’s why you felt the song was “tribal”. For me, this show was very special because for first time they speak in the cooficial languages of the country (gallego, euskera and Catalan). Very emocional 💔

  •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi!!! They are great!!! In the presentation you can see a lot of our Galician roots. The song has unique resources of our language (Galician), besides including parts in other languages and dialects of our country. As for the clothes they wear, they are inspired by our traditional Galician costume, the jewelry is equally traditional and even the braid. The dance step you see (the two boys dancing with the girl), is a step that is done in our traditional dance, which is called, Muñeira, we can even claim the use of the tambourine, which is closely linked to our culture. As you can see, they have a strong message that they not only transmit with the lyrics of the song, but also with their appearance and staging. It's a shame they didn't win, few songs say and represent as much as this one. I'm glad you liked it!

*Without a doubt it was the best song but in Spain the powerful institutions would never allow a song to be sung in Galician, Basque or Catalan because for the Spanish to do that is like usurping their identity when it is the opposite, it is expanding knowledge and show the world that you can speak other minority languages and be proud of them in a state where Spanish is spoken. Sad reality but true that this happens in the 21st century*

The folks, músic, dance un north of Spain are directly related with Celtics (bagpipes,mithology...etc) tanxugueiras song IS one project inclusive, showing Europe that spaniards are not only "toros, paella y playa". Tanxugueiras have released three albums; "TANXUGUEIRAS" (2018), "CONTRAPUNTO" (2019) and "DILUVIO" (2022) and have performed in Spain and abroad.
In the first two albums, "TANXUGUEIRAS" and "CONTRAPUNTO" the songs are exclusively traditional like "O Querer" or "Albedrío" in which the power and coordination of their voices and their mastery of the tambourine can be clearly appreciated.
In their latest album "DILUVIO" (deluge) released on 07/29/2022 they mix Galician folklore with other more modern styles. Of almost all the songs you can find official videos on TH-cam where you can set the subtitles in Castilian (Spanish) and in other languages such as Terra, Figa, Midas, Averno, Pano Corado, Desidia, Seghadoras and Fame de odio. For other songs there is only the official audio, such as Arica and Sorora and the instrumentals Treboada and Acougo.
As they point out in their official website, in the album "DILUVIO", the "cantareiras" (galician word that means women who sing) question alleged faults or capital sins installed in society. To the seven "original": envy (Figa), greed (Midas), anger (Averno), lust (Pano Corado), laziness (Desidia), gluttony (Fame de odio), pride (Arica) they add three more: homogeneity (Terra), hostility (Seghadoras) and patriarchy (Sorora). Beliefs that after the storm (Treboada) they have decided to turn into transforming lessons for life: a deluge of self-acceptance, diversity, free love, empowerment and recovery of traditions in modern times.
In these and upcoming dates they are giving concerts throughout Spain solo or in festivals with other artists presenting their "Midas" tour. On their official website, which can be configured in Galician or Spanish languages, there is information about the band, their albums and concerts of the current tour.
On TH-cam there are many videos of the tour, some of them quite good like their concert in Cadiz, To see it type in TH-cam: Concierto Tanxugueiras (Plaza de San Antonio - Jueves de Carnaval 2022)
