It's been so fun in my own journey into Middle-earth's depths to see well beneath the happenings of the Third Age. Like, the movies started everything for me but, boy, are there depths! I'm starting to make videos myself on these depths - TBS, you're an inspiration!
Elrond's understanding of the emotional toll of his supernatural parents, his brother's decision, the loss of his wife, the duty of ensuring the legacy of Numenor though Aragorn and his ultimate separation from his daughter is what gives him the depth to be the wisest of the Elves. What a storyline for a character.
Of course Elrond ranks among one of the if not The Greatest Elf to ever exist He has seen his share of the 1st age, witnesed, learned and rised up during the 2nd, lived to tell the tales to the other heroes in the 3rd and witnesed newly established Kingdom of his brothers people and finally sailed to the Everlasting peace Maybe Im a litlle fanboy here but one of my favorite and key characters to the whole story, he should have been main protagonist in the Rings of Power, im not so sure about the same actor though, but we will see what he brings in season 2 Great video as always
@@TheBrokenSwordElrond is definitely in the top 5, the other top 4 for me are: Finrod Felegund, Fingolfin, Cirdan, and Galadriel. Cirdan and Galadriel for being two of the wisest and oldest elves in Middle Earth at the end of the 3rd Age. Finrod Felegund for sacrificing his life so that Beren could still live and go on with his quest for a Silmaril, and Fingolfin for just being a cool dude when Feanor was being an absolute d**k to him, and then going on to fighting Morgoth 1 on 1 - giving Morgoth a permanent limp before dying.
@@john-er6orReplace Galadriel with the almost Maia level power Glorfindel and we can shake hands 😊. Anyway the Elves who were the true power movers in the 1st age were the strongest by far, Feanor who succeeded in capturing a Valar made light in the Silmarils and survived though not for long an attack of multiple Balrogs, his sons etc.
@@HgHg-yp6ft That’s just my personal opinion list, and you’re right about the 1st Age having the most powerful elves, but I didn’t include Feanor in my list because because he made some really poor decisions (the oath, all of the kinslayings but especially the first one, burning the ships when he reached ME, etc.) I’d definitely put Glorfindel in the top 10.
I'll call Elrond one of the greatest Elves, and among them the one who served the most non-Elves as well as Elves, perhaps fulfilling Eru Ilúvatar's original design the most.
Someone once pointed out that elrond was the man behind the scenes making things happen. The fellowship was formed at the council of elrond, he forbade his daughter from marrying aragorn the ranger, had narsil reforged, told aragorn the men of the mountain will answer the King of Gondor, pushing aragorn to accept his true place as king and bolstering the army. And allowing his daughter to marry him after he became king and there was peace.
That was cool I enjoyed that thanks man, Elrond was one of the most fascinating characters for me. I been watching a lot of your videos lately and you happened to say that your Welsh, that’s interesting to know, subscriber from Bridgend here!
a fun story idea; in the new age, some human children find rivendell and explore it. not knowing what exactly they found and coming up with stories as children do to explain the location
Elrond being a half-elf makes him special but he can't hold a candle to Galadriel. She has seen the radience of the two trees in Aman the blessed realm, she survived the Helcarax crossing. The fact that they make her look so weak in the show really grinds my gears.
If I am not mistaken Elrond was not sad because Arwen would someday loose her husband, movies make this implication of her remaining immortal and fading away after Aragorn dies. Elrond was sad because Arwen had chosen to become mortal herself like his brother had since being half-elven they were granted that choice.
Yes I think that Elrond ranks among the greatest of the eleves. Also for the statement that everyone in the fellowship brought something special to table. What did Pippen bring 😂
How does Earendil's ship retain sufficient air for him to breathe up there in space? While we're at it: - What does Earendil eat? - What does Elwing do all day in her White Tower while Earendil is navigating the same path in the sky, day after day after day....? - Doesn't Earendil get bored also? -
Good questions,my theory is that the ship is surrounded by a invisible barrier that allows Ëarendil to breathe, likely he has a supply of Lembas that is replenished. Also he may eat more of a variety when he's with Elwing. Elwing most likely reads plenty of books, it's not like she's in prison. So she may spend time with Maiar and a few of the Valar.
In the final battle of Dagorlad, does anyone ever say who struck the killing blow onto Sauron? Gil-Galad was already dead, having been consumed by fire, right? So was it Elrond who struck the final blow? Elendil with a dying thrust, as he then fell on and broke his sword? (the movie says otherwise) Or did Cirdan himself, not known as a warrior, strike that blow? Or Isildur using his own sword? No one ever said, right?
According to The Silmarillion, Isildur did: "This I will have as weregild for my father's death, and my brother's. Was it not I that dealt the Enemy his death-blow?" (The Silmarillion, Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age)
Was Elrond’s fostering of Aragorn (and other dunidein heirs) a foresight of the general ascendancy of that line to the throne? Or did he see a specific call to Aragorn to unite the kingdoms? Also if he did see this call, did he foresee the potential for Arwen to unite with him?
Elrond foresaw everything you stated, that's why he was so cold to Aragorn in the movies. He foresaw her death. It's much deeper than that,he knows he will never see his brother and daughter also grandchildren after death. And he's missing Celebrian. That has to hurt. She's in Valinor waiting for him to come home, and will be devastated to know she will never see Arwen again. Ellidan and Elrohir most likely stayed in middle earth and faded away like Maglor.
1) Yes and no. According to The Silmarillion Elrond fostered the Heirs of Isildur due to their kinship and because he knew one of their line would have an important role to play. “In that house [Imladris] were harboured the Heirs of Isildur, in childhood and old age, because of the kinship of their blood with Elrond himself, and because he knew in his wisdom that one should come of their line to whom a great part was appointed in the last deeds of that Age.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion, Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age). 2) Yes. He had foreseen that if Aragorn succeeded, he would be equal to Elendil, the High King of Arnor and Gondor. “"Aragorn, Arathorn's son, Lord of the Dúnedain, listen to me! A great doom awaits you, either to rise above the height of all your fathers since the days of Elendil, or to fall into darkness with all that is left of your kin."” - Elrond (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, Appendix A, "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen") Also, when Aragorn came to Imladris, Elrond named him “Estel”, which means “hope” and is grounded in “trust” or “faith”. To the Elves, “estel” refers to the belief that despite of the evil in the world, Eru (the creator of everything) is good and that his designs are ultimately good as well. So Elrond gave Aragorn a name that reflected him being the hope for mankind to overcome the evil of Sauron. 3) I don’t think he realized Arwen’s fate was tied to Aragorn’s until they plighted their troth and Arwen made the choice to be counted among Men. “"My son, years come when hope will fade, and beyond them little is clear to me. And now a shadow lies between us. Maybe, it has been appointed so, that by my loss the kingship of Men may be restored. Therefore, though I love you, I say to you: Arwen Undómiel shall not diminish her life's grace for less cause. She shall not be the bride of any Man less than the King of both Gondor and Arnor. To me then even our victory can bring only sorrow and parting - but to you hope of joy for a while. For a while. Alas, my son! I fear that to Arwen the Doom of Men may seem hard at the ending."” - Elrond (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, Appendix A, "The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen")
I never pictured Rivendell at all like in the movies. Apart from the Hobbits, I imagined everything quite differently. Everything is different in my mind but it was interesting.

I understand why Elrond had the choice between a mortal life or an immortal one but I don't understand why he was able to stay in Middle Earth. Because Arwen had to decide between staying in middle earth and dying or leave and become immortal right? Why was Arwen obligated to leave middle earth to become immortal but her father being able to stay in M-E *and* being immortal? I hope you understand me 😅 my English might be bad/confusing 🥲😂😭
It was his choice to stay after he made his decision to be counted as an elf. he could have went to Valinor at any given time if he so chosed to do so. Same goes for Arwen had she chosen to be counted as an elf she wouldn’t have to necessarily have to leave middle earth because of the choice it’s more so because Middle earth would be eventually become unbearable for elves to remain there.
This is what is so special about Elrond. He is the grandson of a Noldorin elf, a man of the Houses of the Edain, the most powerful elf that never went to the Undying Lands and a Maiar. Clear enough?
Given that Middle-earth is supposed to be our world in a mythical past era, I would have to say that Elrond and the Elves leaving didn't really turn out well in the long-term, because Men certainly haven't done well with the world or each other.

As a thought, Tolkien’s Elves have a very low birthrate, which prevents overpopulation despite their immortality. Valinor itself is huge and has unique properties that accommodate its inhabitants. Also, not all Elves live in Valinor; many remain in Middle-earth, and those who die go to the Halls of Mandos, where they may choose to be re-embodied or stay.
