Based on the story of the same name by L.N. Tolstoy. Despite his young years, the rich Moscow gentleman Dmitry Olenin had already made many mistakes, became disillusioned with life and decided to leave as a cadet for the Caucasus. Arriving at his place of service in the Cossack village, Olenin begins to greedily absorb new impressions. He is captivated by the majestic Caucasian nature, he is attracted by the integral, strong characters of the Cossacks, their free life. The film shows a painful search for a moral ideal through an attempt to become familiar with the simple life of the people, with nature.
