Recent classifications might regard Phasianus colchicus as paraphyletic to the Green Pheasant (Phasianus versicolor), with a division into different species based on plumage differences, with all ring-necked subspecies lumped together under Phasianus torquatus, with Phasianus colchicus now being restricted to only black-necked subspecies, with other subspecies with similar plumage color to each other than to other subspecies forming other different species, with one of these possibly being the closest to the green pheasant.
