I finally got a boat a couple weeks ago and I'm so glad you made this video. I've been reading tons of websites but they all talk about fancy boats that have console controls and power trim. My boat is a 1969 fiberglass jon boat so I needed a guide for a tiller steer outboard. Watching this super simple explanation makes me feel very confident for taking it out for the first time. Thanks!
Wow!!! Just by putting my pin to the second hole, my boat was able to go to 26 km/h instead of 10 km/h (16 mph instead of 6 mph). Thanks for that great advice! You are right, the motor was pointing towards the boat, pushing the front in the water. I love your videos!
I have Been looking EVERYwhere for info on that pin ting for my outboard. It’s been rite out “like in shallow water” so kept catching air with motor out at sea. Therefore unable to plane... now tho... “no.2” thanks so much dude!!!
I was not able to see which one is number two from the motor downwards or from the transom upwards…which way you count??? Lots to learn Erick thanks!!!!
Is this doable while you're out on the water? Seems it would be safer to be able to have the motor in neutral vs in gear while working so close to the propeller (or maybe this is only done when motor is off?) but then how would you put in shallow water on the fly?? Jeez I got alot to learn! Ha
Great question, to put it in the shallow drive, you leave in forward gear, idle, pull the motor towards you and then let it go. I should probably make a video on how it works. I'll do that soon.
On your setup (similar to mine), do you trim the motor before you launch? When I took mine I out, I was too nervous to trim on the water and drop that bolt. I see so many videos where people use auto trimming while driving, but hardly any for trimming small outboards.
@@ErickMartinSucre That's the default setting the motor came in and I tested. Though it felt real sluggish. I'm using a 10.8ft Bris dinghy with a Hangkai 6.5hp motor. Motor manual references Tohatsu motor. So I think mine is a generic Tohatsu. So my thought was I need to trim the boat to bring the nose down or move some more weight to the front. Maybe both?
Depends on the transom of the boat. For example my Saturn BB290's transom sits on a slight angle inward and if I leave the motor in slot one well the motor also sits on and slight inward angle. When I put it on slot 2 then the motor sits straight. This will in turn make the nose of my boat stay up less and get into plane faster
Unfortunately that's something we have to deal with. The best way I can handle that is I lower my speed and I try to tackle the wake in an angle to minimize the bounce effect.
@@andrewlee1321 Oh that's what you mean. Ok, the transom bracket on the outboard has a long bolt and a nut in one end. You need to tighten the nut to a point where you can lift it, but you still can feel some tension. I can make you a quick video of how that goes if you like.
Traveling with Rick you’re welcome!! If you notice, the transom is on a inward angle making the outboard sit in an angle as well. Putting it on 2 makes the outboard in-line with the boat helping it get into plane faster
Make sure the half moon shaft holder comes along with the motor - sometimes they get stuck and allow you to place the pin directly against the shaft, that's a no-no.
Look up the manual online. On page 11, you'll see the trim tabs displayed as #14. If you cant find it, find me on Facebook if you can, send a message and I'll send you the pictures

@@ErickMartinSucre it's in one, i tried 2 on the river and it acted like they prop was sucking air. I'm wondering if the fin that was on it when i bought it is too much
Informative video! I have 9.9 Suzuki on a 1436 and have the pin at #2 I've been curious about trying it at #1. Max speed I get is 18mph with gear and 1 person, with 2 people it's about 14mph. Thought maybe putting it at #1 might achieve a more speed out of it.
Hey there thanks for wacthing! It is possible yes that it may give you more speed. I looked at the angle where the propeller and the bottom of the boat would be parallel to each other and the # 2 slot was perfect. If you the the 1436 on the trailer you could look at the angle and see if it matches the bottom
Can you do a video on how to properly set your small motor on your boat I see so many people have a long shaft motor on a small transom and wondering why I can’t go on plane I place my hydrofoil with the bottom of my hull I see some people have there motor 5 inches lower and it’s embarrassing because they don’t know how to build up there transom
Most of the time I have to move my weight forward to get into plane with the 6hp. I also changed the propeller to 7.8x7. The original propeller was 7.8x8
Erick Martin Sucre I have gotten 24 mph max no wind out of a 10 ft jon on a 1972 evinrude with just me an 3 gallons of gas and I was scared way too fast with the hydrofoil 14 mph without the foils and I had the motor just 2 inches lower then the bottom of the hull
Erick Martin Sucre I also got the old 1972 6hp with a black new style prop on it I’m new to boats but I’m sure it made the difference the older ones had a 2 blade white one
I tried this on my 270+6hp . I moved trim pin from 1st hole to 2nd. Top speed dropped from 24-25kmph to 22-23kmph , with only 1 person onboard. I'll later check what happens with 2 people onboard.
We finally could plane 2 persons & 6hp & trim pin at second hole 😊 We had to put the full 12lt (3gallon) external tank under the front seat, didn't install back seat , had 20 pound extra stuff, and the two people weighed 400pounds. By the way, boat didn't plane with pin in 1st hole...
@@ErickMartinSucre finally, thanks to your video. Now that I know the maximum weight I can get into plane with, now I can reduce some more weight if I have heavier passengers. Half full gas tank, removing transom wheels after launching the boat, less extra stuff...
I found out that when you add more than one person on the boat with gear you cannot get into plane. This is not necessarily an issue with the trimming but the prop. The original prop is a 7.8x8 prop that allows you to get the max speed out of the motor but not the max torque. I purchased a 7.8x7 prop and even though this lowered my max speed from 17mph to 14mph I was able to get the max power out of the engine allowing me to get into plane with a person and gear. You will notice that when you're in the water with your gf and you try to give it full throttle it won't rev to its maximum power. It kinda stays at half way revving.
