This live action was terrific and full of energy and amazing colors. I love how Disney didn’t have Jasmine wear her iconic teal-colored dress the entire time. She looks stunning in it here, but the pink and yellow outfits she wore throughout the film were gorgeous as well. The costume design was remarkable ❤

Hi everyone! I study Kathak (Indian classical dance). The reason why people potentially perceive this choreography as Indian is possibly due to some cultural markers. They frequently use the Anjali Mudra (Namaste pose) throughout the choreography. Moreover, they also greet each other with an Adab pose (e.g. 0:50) which is an Indian muslim greeting.
The belly dancing (raqs sharqi) on the other hand is mostly associated with Arab/Middle Eastern culture. Apart from this, the choreography is mostly culturally ambiguous and therefore Orientalist (i.e. western construct of the East).

This is my take. Agrabah was supposed to have its own culture that mixed Asian and Middle Eastern cultures into one. So it has elements of both Indian and Arabic dance choreography in the dance as well. You've also got to remember that you have actors in this who are of Egyptian, Arabic, Iranian, Tusinian and Indian descent. They're multicultural, therefore it's best to reflect that in the film as well.

Years ago, Iraq was considered to be from South Asia, so they were influenced by India and the culture of Andalusia. In one of the stories of the Thousand and One Nights, the Princess of India is the same Princess of Baghdad. Today, Iraq is considered an Arab Middle Eastern, so we can consider that Jasmine is a brown (Arab, Indian) princess.

Why the Critics pan it? The cinema is SO EXPENSIVE - I would have loved this moment in the cinema with my Mum, My Apologies to you - Guy Ritchie - it is a beautiful mesmerising film, in the best way that I cant forget - another beautiful possible world X

South Asia has been influenced by Persian culture since history. Of course it looks similar.

I love how Aladdin was just having a time of his life while dancing after some minutes he got use to it. And I love how Jasmine fits in well with the instrumental.
Aladdin was supposedly to be a Chinese story about a lazy boy in China who was at home most of the time but I love how Disney made Aladdin a much more productive and more inclusivity to other cultures as well.
