GAGGIA CLASSIC DESCALING. How I descale my espresso machine

  • In this video I share the steps I use to descale my machine on a regular basis. Always refer to your coffee machine manufacturers instructions, your particular machine may differ and require alternate processes to mine, therefore hold no responsibility to damaged caused if you refrain from following such information. If you live in a hard water area and use tap water in your machine, you may find you need to carry out this process more frequently. I recommend filtered or bottled water to increase the life of your unit.
    Thanks.

    Tip; If you descale regularly this is probably not an issue but;
    Always empty the boiler (containing descale solution) through the steamer wand, otherwhise "chunks" loosened within the boiler might block the solenoid valve on the way out (if going throgh the grouphead). Only run the descale solution through the grouphead when the boiler (supposedly) are free of any larger "chuncks".

    Thanks for the demonstration. You can use citric acid and that does an equally good job of descaling as those products.

    A note to those who have models with aluminum boilers: we are advised to not use Puly or other citric acid based descalers on aluminum boilers. Citric acid is fine if you have stainless steel, copper, or brass boilers.

      That's true, thanks for the reminder. Unfortunately, I'm a complete infant when it comes to metals, so how do I identify what metal my boiler is made of? The manufacturer's information doesn't say and I can't get ahold of them.

      The OEM Gaggia Decalcifier Descaler solution is primarily citric acid and the Gaggia classic boiler is definitely aluminum. Using only filtered water to prevent most scale in the first place in your machine is probably best Idea. Understand that different aluminums have different corrosion properties, so just because Gaggia uses citric acid on their Gaggia Classic aluminum boiler, does not mean that it will be ok for other aluminum boilers. The standard formula is 2 Tablespoons Citric Acid Powder to 1 quart (or litre) warm water. Durgol swiss esspereo descaler has a version specifically for aluminum boilers. I live in the Seattle area, so descaling for us is fairly infrequent because of our water quality.

      @@joeschafer1 True. The OEM Gaggia decalcifer is a general use product. Classic Pro is not the only machine made by Gaggia. Other of their machines have different boiler materials. In fact, other Classic models have different boiler materials. Not trying to change your mind, just passing on info for those who might wonder. You do you, Boo...
