      Great video . When your lighter runs out of gas ,the spark can ignite dry tinder

      Hey Lilly, you can put some of these old Gas oven lighters in your fire kit in the shop. Search on Amaz*n for "Bügelgasanzünder", they also work with fire stones and are great.

    One little tip on the magnesium. It’s a pain to collect the scrapings in windy conditions. It’s possible to collect some in advance and you can add it to some Vaseline/cotton balls so that you don’t have your shavings scattered in the wind.

      Another tip, bring duct/gorilla tape (wrap thin portion around ferro rod as handle) and scrape magnesium onto sticky side. Duct tape is flammable, and will keep magnesium from moving in wind.

    What a great video...There's a quick to dry your wet lighter...roll the rollers on a dry cloth few times until it sparks again (make sure to roll it the correct way or you'll damage the shape of the flint and it may not work again)...it took less than 2 minutes to get the lighter sparks again by using this method...

    Good video.
    Here's a tip - I paint all of my fire steels (ferro rods) with brightly coloured nail varnish. This does 2 things, firstly it stops them corroding which they will do very quickly, secondly it makes them much easier to spot if you drop them anywhere.

    • @MartiniDave02
      @MartiniDave02 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Aramis3737 They will corrode quite quickly if you leave them somewhere damp, then they will just crumble away. More Kochanski has an excellent video about Ferro rods - he calls it a metal match, in which he goes over the use of the rod and various tinders. It's quite a long video, but you'll know more after watching it than before.

    A possible emergency supply for magnesium during a SHTF scenario, or a TEOTWOAWKI event, is those burning red flare lights that are used for emergency road flares used on the highway. Often called "fuzees" in America. The magnesium is in the center of the paper tube. I think they would be available everywhere.

    If all you can find is wet wood after its been raining, then, you need a road flare. One twenty minute flare will start soaked wood in less than 15 minutes. However, a flare is useless when wet.

    If you can hold down the tab on your wet lighter, you can light the gas with your fire steel. Use a string to hold the valve open. Two people could do that very easily.

  • @stevesmith3556
    @stevesmith3556 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tip for the wet lighter. Blow out excess water. Press the flint roller tight against your jeans. Give it a good push down the length of your thigh. Repeat until it starts to spark again. The friction dries the flint and roller. Back to working in seconds. 👍🤠

  • @negolfman
    @negolfman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The bic lighter can be attached to a small zip tie to prevent fuel leakage. Then it can be connected vertically to a chapstick roll with about a foot of paracord wrapped in duct, gorilla or gaffers tape. A spare cotton ball soaked in petroleum jelly, can be placed in the cap. The empty bic can be useful even when empty, the plastic can be shaven for tinder, the wheel when rolled but not sparked can make a firestarter for the shaved plastic, when used that child safety device can then be removed with leatherman pliers can also be made into a improvised fishing hook and sharpened. If carefully removed, the two springs underneath the sparking wheel and the fuel cable button, can be bent into fishing hooks and a snare.

  • @jonathanstaley3883
    @jonathanstaley3883 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If your BIC lighter gets wet you can just run it very fast with long strokes down your jeans rolling the flint wheel in the right direction. The friction will cause the flint to dry and it’ll be working again in seconds.
