I actually got this advice in my sword fighting classes. I was trying to get techniques perfect in my sparring and it was causing me to slow down. The instructor was just like "better to do it wrong and actually hit the guy than wait to try for perfection and miss."

I feel torn about social media. It seems like a blessing to have the opportunity to reach so many people from home and make a business take off easily, but at the same time is overwhelming and time consuming.

And we need to hear it again tomorrow and every day that these platforms try to leech our ideas and time from us in exchange for pointless vanity metrics. Thanks for saying this so bluntly.
I had a canvas haunting me for 10 years because I couldn't come up with a good enough technical solution to painting a texture. The painting was literally mocking me on a daily basis. It wasn't soul crushing, I moved on to other things, but I have this desire to own that bitch.
I have to ask, what was this terrorizing texture?!
@@sugar-swans It was a knitted blanket. A very simple and basic pattern, but the blanket in the painting wasn't flat, it had pleats. That meant that each individual stitch had to be rendered in perspective to some extent. In my mind, this knitted pattern had to be excuted realistically because the blanket had a meaning as the stitching represented the bonds of family and was important to the composition. I still never went back into that painting, but now I feel as though I will hopefully have the skills to tackle it if I keep progressing. If you're ever really super bored, grab a knitted blanket, put a few pleats into it and try to draw just an 8x10 inch section of it.
I know what you mean, i have that with (way to many) other paintings as well, might as well paint a big middle finger on them because that's what it feels like they are telling me haha but something i tried recently that helped, is painting or drawing the thing that i've built up in my head as this "big end boss" in different styles or mediums where i feel more comfortable with, just so the now irrational fear of that thing goes away abit. Something i try to do sometimes is just making an intentionally "crappy" version of it, but maybe in a fun color scheme that i wouldn't use in the other "scary" painting. The point being, trying to get rid of the anxiety i've built up over the years with the other painting, while also improving the skills i need to get the other painting to look like i want it to. Hope you'll one day be able to finish it and be happy with it 😊 (Sorry for bad grammar, i'm swiss)

"... is just a form of procrastination." Oh wow, did that call me out! It can be so true! I'm a brand new baby artist (just started painting November 2023 after decades of saying "I wish") who is constantly surprising myself by making art that not only do I like, other people seem to like too, but once I actually got ahold of some watercolors I spent a MONTH binging painting videos before I even took up the brush because I was afraid to start hahaha. This is an excellent video, thank you. The title drew me in, because I am absolutely an introvert without an audience haha. I was unaware of you before, but now I'm going down the rabbit hole! It's not procrastinating if I paint while I listen and learn! 😁

wow, this is me.. lol i just laid paint to paper about 72 hours ago for the first time. after weeks of watchin videos and havin everything i needed already. im still very very hesitant to actually do it, id rather watch everything and learn everything first 🤣 but i wanna also Do It, so bad i cant stand it. lol

Hey Dries, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your videos and that you are really there fur us. So many times I've watched a video on other channels giving advice and at the end there is a book you have to buy, or a seminar you have to sign up for to get the real info. You just tell us how it is and help us learn from your personal experiences. I'm at the end of my "career" and just starting as an artist and I'm also a massive introvert, so your message is absolute gold for me. By the way I am jealous of the hair, I'm bald as a babies bottom.

I did also many exhibitions and Art fairs around the world but my biggest problem was that I felt uncomfortable to sell a Artwork which is a part of my soul♥️

I've been looking for advice on an art career for several years and this is easily the best advice I've come across yet. You didn't just give me a pep talk, you gave me a roadmap.
You are speaking to the part of me that hasn't been acknowledged even by myself because I thought I was being too sensitive and not tough enough. Stuck in the learning spiral, not sure where to start, wearing too many hats and haven't actually created my art in a few years. I am not a traditional artist by any means, I am a pattern maker in the fashion and costume industry trying to express myself online, but too afraid to do so. I've made art for others, but doing so for my own personal brand is debilitatingly overwhelming. 90:10 is something i'm definitely going to be implementing in my goals. Thank you, I just stumbled across your channel, but you are wildly brilliant, and YT algorithm needs to start putting your content out to more people.

Realised that I've been doing ALL or Nothing, all this while; though not a full-time artist yet but I'm on my journey to move away from corporate and pursue illustration as a freelancer. Great video! The issue of spending so much time learning that you fail to produce art is so spot on. I'd never really associated it with procrastination, but that's exactly what it is. Also appreciated your take on producing for social media - its something I've always struggled with precisely because "they" tell you its the only way to sell your art. And just in case anyone happens to read this - I've sold close to 1,000 prints and custom artworks and have only had two people want their money back. So you're right not to worry about it Dries.
I'm disabled and neurodivergent, so just finding energy to complete work is very difficult. And on top of that, having to take good pictures and make a decent post of my work really mess with my executive dysfunction! I'm trying my best to get better at it, I've made some changes in my lifestyle to have more freedom for my art. But as soon as I have enough funds, I'll need to hire an assistant even if it's just someone to post online for me. There's just to much to think about in the art business when I just want to create and connect through my art
I honestly don't know what's wrong with me (I'm beginning to wonder if I have adhd) but I struggle SO much. I keep just putting making stuff off, until I feel better until I'm in a better head space until I feel like I have the energy to do it, and I just watch videos on youtube. I try to find people doing polymer clay (that's become my recent hobby, I basically have a hobby collecting hobbies, like crochet, knitting, I used to paint /a lot/, nail art, it just keeps going and I keep spending money on new shit without even really doing much with the shit I already have) I thought maybe my problem is having the area I do most of my work being in another room out of site out of mind, so I bought this kinda lap desk and set up my pasta machine and have all my clay on it and y'know what? Day in and day out it just stares at me while my fat ass lays in bed. And then I hate and despise myself for letting me get to this point. It's awful. Anyway SORRY! All of this was just to say I completely understand, my heart goes out to you it's got to be difficult having to create art while working around your disability. I really struggle with whenever I make stuff it never looks as, I can never think of the exact word I want, but its like polish? Like other people's art looks so like official and like ... I don't know, I have such a hard time losing words I want to say ugh.. I feel like my stuff looks so uneven and not perfect. I try so hard to make stuff that looks polished I basically worked myself up to a meltdown yesterday trying. I don't understand why I have such a hard time! Anyway, I see your comment was made a month ago. I hope you're doing better! I hope in this last month you've been able to have fun creating your art. (also I'm really sorry for my huge ass paragraph :\ )

I have a waterdamage on my house & would need to get at least $ 50 000 for repaires. It stinks mold & I got headache...🤷 I am also looking trough all vid's & how to start with business with low money input, since I got fooled by 2 persons fixing 2 other waterleaks that were on my home, & they were charging me overprice...I am being very cautious of /aware not to do anything wrong by starting business online, that can cause more costs!🤷
I am retired, 65+, & with many other things happening on private level, as being let down by a near relative, who was moral support, to be able to declutter & sell things I do not need ( ☝️I helped that person many times when needed!!!) ...& There is also a near relative that has health issues, that worries me & I have it constantly in the back of my mind...it all contributes to going out less, do less at home, though I am doing my best as I can, & have 22 internet auctions with things for sale, though sales, were fewer & fewer for last 3 months...🤷
I have seen some vid's about people getting help with a m a n i t a _ m u s c a r i a, that they got a lot done in one go!👍...& The best part of it, it is not in any way connected to addiction as in micro dose, so it would be the way to give it a go...check out vid's about it..👍 as I understood, it helps our brain to connect lost connections again..🤔
But I understand You & Your situation...🙏please kindly do not apologize for You being You, since noone got hurt..🤷 & I also thought of this selfsabotage system...could it be a programmed pattern since upbringing? That One does it "unconsciously"?
As for having assistans: is there any church that has volounteers to help people out? Maybe someone visiting & coming to talk to & exchange ideas as well as get a little bit of help with Your work & ideas?

Talking so genuinely from passion and experience. The last couple of videos I've watched. You've said some things that have shed new light on my approach to art. One is really truly accepting being an artist is just how I want to make a living simply living and being myself, of which art is a part. Hopefully, managing to inspire someone one else to follow their heart too.

Hey Dries, this is one of your best videos yet, I think. Love how you come real here. What spoke most to me was when you discussed the strategies that artists often over-obsess about to not get scammed or screwed. In my young career, I spent way too much time studying art law to protect myself, and I wrote outrageously stiff contracts. I lost a lot of sales because of my ridiculous contracts. I was proud of my self-protective research, but didn’t see how I was losing my connections to prospective buyers because I was afraid. You are right, its not a big deal if some of these things happen to you. Live and learn, but make the sale today! Oh, but a quick google search about a scam scenario that you might be experiencing never hurts either, only takes a few minutes.
I know the feeling and I'm very happy that you shared your story. I'm sure that there is someone out there that will read this and find great support in it, you've helped someone overcome some struggles today Keith! (Is it Keith Garubba or is that your artists/youtube name?)
Something that I've noticed is that whenever I took a long break from being productive in art, I always came back improved. And I haven't been doing anything art related during my break, and what I learn from that is that stepping back for a while and taking breaks help my brain to implement what I've learned into my art.
I would sometimes stuck with the same process and not really improving, unless I took along break and came back.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve been an artist all my life but recently started my art business (c. 2021) and I’ve started and stopped so many times. I took breaks from the burnout and also studied and tried to perfect my techniques and rarely posted. I thought I was investing in myself by learning but after watching this video, it seems I was procrastinating and afraid! Keeping posting schedules and getting lost in the sea of likes and followers, was overwhelming to say the least. Last year I got scammed, and it was my first commission (outside of my family & friends). It was disheartening but it did teach me to make sure I’m doing my art for myself. I’ve just got to believe and trust that there’s still an opportunity to make a living out here. Thank you so much for this video! & I wish all of us much success. ⭐️
Getting scammed, having your art stolen online and in person, and having a bad commission where someone talks you down in price and then is never satisfied - these are all things that have happened to me that stopped me from doing art after a while. I’m now getting back into it and only in person. Finished work that people can buy at my booth.

Wow I've been thinking about all these topics for years in the back of my mind while trying to be creative in various ways and you really put into words everything I'd kinda already been feeling while also breaking it all down into a simpler, more conclusive and more actionable whole.
I'm fairly comfortable with art, but I was completely new to writing until I decided to start learning it from basically nothing. The research rabbit holes, the seeking of the most correct or efficient path to follow, the setting of draconian and overly demanding habit goals which drained me of all will to keep going, these are all things I've done while trying to learn to write. Good advice transcends its own bounds, it seems.

Your comments on social media are spot on. I have had zero luck on Instagram simply because I don't truly understand how to make it work for me. I don't like social media--I think that comes through in every post. *SIGH* I never figured out how to get my images viewed by the general public; I generally only got views by other artists, not possible art collectors.
It's because you need to know who your target audience is, and then hashtag "their" choice of words. Like flowers - flowergarden.... Mental health - overcoming, depression and so on.

I really appreciate this video and it got my hopes higher to maybe get myself to change in a necessary way. It's openly honest about the daily meaning of life requirements. Then i realized that procrastination, perfectionism and fear of failure are not my actual underlying problems; they're terms from the productivity mill. They're real but i dare to claim it's surface level when it's a case of autistic introverts with adhd. After decades of trying to figure myself and communities out, i always hated the lack of transparency and honesty, while everyone successful and unsuccessful felt it was a taboo to admit the actual amount of time they spent on not making the art and on not growing intellectuallyand conceptually. Hearing this video, spending 70% of the 90% of "doing" on the business side, opens that up more honestly. But then confronts me with my inability to pursue and endure a daily or weekly life in which only 10 % of my time can be about researching and only 27% of my time can be about expressing, feeling, regulating emotions, creating worlds. And 63% is about the business side that doesnt only scare me the most, but also is an artifical hill i can't climb; i live on fascination. I dont get payoffs via tasks. My soul gets crushed very easily. I have zero abilith to park stimuli; i cant do something creatively if ive had to fill my mindspace with something that anti-fascinates and overstimulates me. Living the majority of my time as a tactical promoting entrepreneur, is an environment i cannot durably sustain. I bet artistst centuries ago also had to spend half of their life on networking and boring assignments and other admin. I fear im not cut out for any ancient or modern capitalist neurotypical productivity based mold. It does make me realise i dont need a workplace, i need an office, a place to go to maybe 10-20% of my time to focus on the business sides exclusively, which i can then leave behind me to focus the other other days on fascination to keep me going and on mental health care; to care for and lay to rest the inner trauma demons that come up whenever i connect with feelings and imagination, besides the almost daily overstimulation and coping with normal everyday world sensescapes. I think health care takes 70- 90% ofmy art making time, which is already enough discouragement to bare.

Not even 5 minutes in and this video already scalped me. I've been on and off learning to draw since 2017 and have made essentially no progress for exactly the fear-procrastination reasons laid out. I over-consumed art content and now my eye is leagues ahead of my hand, so I hate everything I draw because I know it's wrong but my hands don't know how to do it right.
I have a lot of potential (according to feedback from my wife, who is a talented artist), but I choke myself out with the fear that I will hate everything I draw...so I don't draw. And then there's the regret of knowing if I'd dedicated myself over the last 7 years instead of being afraid to start, I'd be an incredible artist by now. It's a big mental trap.

This is the heart of the greatest struggle for me. Now I understand I have adhd , and an issue with perfectionism. It explains why I’ve made decisions and had reactions to my decisions in life.
I have a huge impulse to just jump towards engaging ideas. I’ve been thwarted from that instinct my whole life, mostly from good intentioned , loving people. So I listen, and I research, learn, make calculated decisions. As a result I talk myself out of stuff or lose the desire.
When I get excited by an idea I want to jump. It’s my instinct. It keeps me motivated, I learn at a rapid rate, and I hyper focus. When I allow myself to do this I am successful- every time. Every time .
Yet I struggle to remind myself that my gut instincts aren’t wrong. It may drive others crazy, but when I succeed then all will be forgotten.

Anxiety can be so crippling! I used to feel almost crazy trying to explain to my family why I didn't want to post anymore (art theft, fear of someone still stalking me from years ago, fear I'll be "cancelled" even though I have nothing to be cancelled over). I've never heard anyone else speak about it like you have.
Now that I've become a mother I've finally found the idea of failing to put my work out there more frightening than the potential consequences of success. But of course now I'm so busy with the baby I hardly have any time! Life has its ironies.... Wonderful video. ♡

I am definitely procrastinating and afraid to even try. But somehow watching this video made me realize, "Oh so it's not just me?" Because it feels very lonely as an artist who is afraid of people. I want to have or just be part of a community. Fear is a terrible voice that convinces you that only the worst things happen, but they rarely do.

This holds true even more so going into the future. it is the traditional artists that will be sought after even more by those seeking hand crafted products and tangible items made by real people. Especially in a world being flooded with AI, which is fine for those who just want a pretty picture. But that was never the audience that would buy a real painting.
But also, traditional art will always be around as long as people with money need to protect their investments by insuring artwork. That has been a long held symbiotic system that works really well. But that is a whole other topic.
