Beautiful performance overall!! Constructive Criticism: But hopefully, next time, all of the dancers will be Ethiopian & represent Ethiopians (only 2 of the dancers were Ethiopian). And the drum part at the beginning didn't reflect the type of instrument that is used in Ethiopian music,
Mel Having a person of another country dance with us is not a shortcoming, rather it is an honor and embellishment to our performance. Beauty is in diversity coming together as one.
+Heran Tebeka I definitely understand where you're coming from, but first timers and non-Ethiopians (which made up the majority, as seen in the video) to the Ethiopian culture may not understand this and having people from a different background perform a dance that is native to Ethiopia is almost misrepresentative of the Ethiopian people, dance, and overall culture. There is a time and setting for diverstiy in dance performers & teaching people of other culture our dances, but there is also a time and setting for people of Ethiopian background to use that stage and represent themselves.
Mel May I ask when and where is this right time and place? Because this is a college event performance. If this isn't when it should be inclusive I don't know of any right setting. I don't deny that representation is important. However, I simply don't see how the presence of two non-Ethiopians, who might I add did a brilliant job learning the moves, of only four performers , is a misrepresentation. The way I see it, it depicts our openness to share the joy that our culture brings to us.
Mel with all due respect, I would like to invite you to ask yourself what our story is? Could we have had other Ethiopians represented? Why didn't we? Where is our school and what does this night mean to us? As you yourself have pointed out there is a context and setting for everthing. This made perfect sense in our context and our world and I'm sure your opinion makes sense in your context. But let's not make assumptions about what each other's stories without knowing the full story. I would like to praise our girls for their passion, dedication and willingness to learn about Ethiopian culture!
