Being and American living in Minnesota, I have little affinity for titles. I have to say, though, there are few people who actually deserve a knighthood and Mr. Harding is definitely one of them.

There's an episode of time team where one of their trailers got stolen in the night... it was the trailer that had all their digging equipment. So nobody had a shovel to dig with except for Phil, who happened to have a shovel stashed under his bed.
"I'm never far from me shovel!"
    Now THATS an archeologist.

I love watching his joy when he gets into a good trench and starts down to see the bottom of a ditch, or a floor surface, or any other thing he's digging at. He's been such a fount of knowledge about how to look at different types of ground and soils. If I were 20 years younger I'd be looking at schooling to become like him. How I miss Phil Harding! Fascinating interview, thank you - I was SO heartened to hear him say how archeology CAN begin at home - in your back garden, in your village or town, it doesn't have to be at a presumed site already known & explored (although that would be fun to end up at) but I always thought from an educational stand point starting at where you are would be a great beginning - asking the Questions: Why? How? When - Are we sure? How do we know? Where's the evidence... On a wider palette, I'd say History - I'd like schools to teach history like this, so kids can trace their journey back through time in the place they live, so it's relevant and brings those unknown & dusty stories to life. Enjoy your 'retirement' Phil - lovely to hear you being kind about Time Team, too... Such a generous soul

I just love him! His passion, dedication and just putting himself to the task at hand with his 100% is so refreshing and stimulating! I also am just loving the whole series, having to find positive things to watch in this time. I think we all really do learn so much from him and the whole crew. I have ancestors, lots of them from England, Ireland and Scotland, as well as other countries, so seeing the country, the castles, the stories and more make me wonder if some of my ancestors had lived or been there in those places. I am too old too, to go out
digging but do the research on ancestry and explore my arm chair archeology though that. Thank you for posting this interview and to Phil especially, along with the whole Time Team. :-) They help put more pieces of our past together like a puzzle.

I love watching your show Time Team, I'm 61 and live in the province of Newfoundland, Canada. Growing up on New Brunswick I loved National Geographic magazines we got every month reading from cover to cover. I most especially loved the articles on archaeology and also anytime they covered the finding of Spanish Galleons or any old ship under water (although I swim not fond of becoming a scuba diver) Yes I was fascinated by what old stuff they found all over the world. I became a nurse and had to leave work early as my old bones couldn't handle it. Well my bones I guess wouldn't be good for an archaeology now either. There are a couple of local dig sites here I visit every so often to se how far they have come with an old settlement. Really enjoy your show I hope they don't cancel.

What a coincidence. I used to be obsessed with archeology as a kid, but then I got more into natural sciences and I discovered that biochemistry fits me like a glove. I'd love to join an amateur archeology group, but there aren't any in my area. (Maybe it's better this way because the whole area is littered with old WW2 bombs) But I totally get you, because for the most time most people though I wouldn't be good enough, and when I put in the work to be good enough, suddenly I shouldn't be wasting my time with biochemistry and study medicine. Even now, the second year into my Masters degree there are still relatives trying to persuade me to switch to medicine. But I'm a stubborn bastard and I'm not going anywhere.

What had he eaten, where did his DNA come from and where are people with it now, and on and on. So much in the way of bits and pieces of Archeology have been done all over, with the information and evidence is packed away in basements, crumbling notebooks! They are still finding information about King Tut from items that were just excavated then tossed into a rubbish room and sealed up in the Egyptian Museum as though it were re-buried! Archeology requires more people than just those who hop into trenches and scrape at the dirt! (Although it starts with them in most cases! ). Phil Harding is a brilliant example of the “Never Surrender! Never Give Up!” Philosophy. If being a get your hands dirty Archeology degree find how your next love can contribute!

I would love to see Phil as the head of the new Time Team they're trying to revive. The series needs an archaeologist as the head, someone who knows what's going on and has been on many field digs.

As a person from the far left coast of one the Queens colonies.
Unfortunately I found this man Twenty years too late.
The knowledge this man has is immense.
I for ever will be grateful to have found this man and his passion for his craft.
I wish I could find lectures of his.
@BBC Ever thought of getting some lectures from Mr. Harding ?
Worth it in my humble opinion.

I don't drink & never really have, could never cultivate a taste for Beer Wine or Alcohol (except when used as a mind altering drug to control self pity) though i worked in Restraunt/ Bar business all my working life-50 years in the Kitchen as Chief bottle washer & Chef BoY, with free booze being a job perk for those who could handle their liquor and not get sloppy stupid, But Phil is a man of special interest, i could sit and have a few pints for a few hours in conversation with, and likely get shit faced with Phil his self deprecating humor is top shelf. I share his passionate obsession for ancient Flint and Chert tools, the older the better. Genuine character Phil is, the real deal.

Mr Harding is a great fellow, and in such a short time he managed to say a lot. I hope he will get to dig soon, and go out for his pint. Also, this has made me think hard on the possibility of a career change, I've always wanted to be an archaeologist. Knapping, yep, done it too, also making stone tools when I was a kid/youngster. The touch is there,(shovel and the trowel!) all I need now is the books!

There’s talk of bringing Time Team back. Hope they do - as I loved it. But Phil always made it for me - and it wouldn’t be Time Team without him. Good to see he is in good form!

My word the Host was a bit of a 'dog with a bone ' about getting Phil to go where she is in Malmesbury. He politely said don't hold your breath a number of times.
