It's nice coming from the IF Drift review to this one to see how really good Iron Factory can be. The figure is awesome in both modes. It's so nice to have something more than a toon Grimlock or even an IDW or FoC one... just a fresh design that looks wicked.
Agreed I really want the rest. I wish they started with another one since grimlock can be a stand along character. If we got a different one first we would know if they were doing them all.
The tiny little dino hands also rotate too😁 Actually surprised you liked Grimlock given how you wasn't into their Lockdown but this guy takes the whole samurai/eastern aesthetic to a whole new level.
Oh man the way they separate head to displace some of the mass from the back to the legs might be one of my favorite innovations on a grimlock figure. Looks dope!
Grimlock's head storing in his tail for the transformation has in fact happened before. Classics grimlock has that exact concept. Tbh a few transformation elements are borrowed if not inspired by classics grimlock. I will say that this figure definitely executed all of those elements better than the classics mold.
I would love to hear the argument FOR light piping. I think every single reviewer I watch all say that painting eyes and visors is the way to go, which I 100% agree with. I would just like to hear a good argument FOR light piping, as I can’t think of any myself.
Light piping is good if done correctly. But it will be very ugly, if someone does it poorly. No middle ground. I prefer the light piping in this figure, because it matches the clear part in the chest. Its yellow color also makes it look like burning with energy. The yellow part behind the head also small enough to blend in. Not all figures have this kind good light piping. One of the better one is Generation Springer/Sandstorm mold. And this Daishogun (this figure I believe it is worth that title) maybe one of the best in light piping department
Light piping is at its best when its combined with the eyes being translucently painted so light can still bleed through. Hasbro has done good light piping but it can really make the eyes feel incomplete without good lighting to aid it.
I was really hoping this review was gonna be this positive. Looks like I'm putting in my order for D Zef and this guy today. They've both looked like figure of the year material from what I've seen.
To your question - at least two other Grimlock figures stowed the head in the tail - the Pretender Classic from '89 and the one from the OG '06 Classic line (which took definitely took aesthetic inspiration from the Pretender ver)
I really like the look of most of the Iron Factory figures, but this really stands out. Figures like this always tempt me towards wanting some Legends.
Honestly, the kibble management on this figure looks good because realistically, Samurai were packing a lot of shit sometimes that isn't so unlike what this Grimlock is packing. Samurai are busy-looking warriors and to be honest, Grimlock has the perfect silhouette of kibble to match it if they flip the design properly--and they did. Works much better for him than, say, streamlined characters like Drift and Lockdown.
Yeah he looks great. I was worried about the size but seeing him next to tarn buts me at ease. Looks like the size is great. My only concern now is Grimlock can be a stand along character so I'm hoping they do the other dinobots in the samurai theme. If they do I'm totally making a samurai shrine diorama for them. I hope they give swoop one of those Japanese kite looking alt mode for his pterodactyl mode. But great review as always the samurai line has been a little hit and miss so I'm glad this one is done well. Since I feel like the two drifts were really bad.
I like the bot mode but I don't like the dino mode, it's not like I hate it but I don't like it. This time IF did an overall good job but usually one mode is substantially weaker then the other, there's always something that feels unfinished and suggestive in one of the two modes. I don't like the feet showing up in the dino's back, I don't like the dino mode arms placement and it's underbelly seems a bit unfinished. Thanks for the review Mr. Skullface.
@@JasonSawyer I have the Planet X Grimlock and love it! A samurai inspired Grimlock in MP scale would display nicely together (yes, I’m a Grimlock fan 😁)

Agreed I thought the drift ones might be the new standard and was going to crush the samurai line. Just hope we get the rest of the dinobots.
The samurai look really works for Grimock, I think my favorite design. I hope they do the rest of the dinos like this.
I hope to Unicron they do. I would buy ALL of them!

@@roonis418 yeah can only hope they do the rest. Wouldn’t mind a samurai optimus as well
@@Nickedup44 theres the samurai leo prime tho
That one works really well. Still not for me, but I can appreciate what they've done here. Thanks man.
I'm not late this time... I saw the bell thingy and BAM!!!! I'm definitely on point this morning!!! 💯😊😊

I bought this figure after this review, and I have to agree with you that this is a great figure, thanks for providing objective and useful review!

The arms /body hide that back kibble making it not that obvious so the silhouette is still clean that's why it works
The two flag/cleaver weapon pieces form a giant saber when connected. I have this figure, love the samurai line from IF.
That is one wicked Grimlock! 😳

I like the IDW and Bayverse inspirations.
reminds me of that time grimlock wanted to be trained by drift

Motif? Between his helmet, his bot mode, and his dino mode, he's got at least 3 sets of teef. Don't need no mo

Longer sword = katana
Shorter sword = wakasashi
Good one.

G1 pretender Grimlock has a gun tail that goes on his head. . . It is actually a pretty similar transformation with the dino head on an armature too.
I want ironfactory to do all the bayverse dinobots like this.
I really hope this tells Iron Factory that going all in on the samurai motif is better than a half-assed attempt like there is on Drift
C'mon, stop sitting on the fence about this figure...
Do you like it or not?

Ugh. If only this was available in MP scale. Can you imagine the presence it would have?
lol who knows maybe chug scale, since another 3rd party did just did jetfire also overlord and sixshot from Iron factory in the past.
It reminds me of the newer Planet X Grimlock, just with the samurai styling. So, maybe that one is close enough?
