  • In this video I go through polar aligning an equitorial mount using the QHYCCD polemaster.
Getting perfect polar alignment is essential for long exposure astrophotography.

That looks so easy . Unfortunately i had mayor problems with freezing Polemaster Software and had to return the Device. Do you use windows 10 ? Cheers 🍻

Hello. Yes its Windows 10. I have the occasional freeze when using the PM software... not very often though and a reboot usually fixed it

I tried everything to fix it . Usb speed setting, tested all driver - software combinations, played a video in the background when using the software etc . Unfortunately nothing worked for me .

Please help...what is the solution when your computer does not recognize the device?? I have tried everything... It seems to work..sort of... on a mac as the mac does not require drivers??

Unfortunatly, I'm not a MAC user, the QHY website does state
The MAC version is currently an informal version and works fine on most MAC models. For high-resolution retina screens, if the display is not normal, select “OPEN IN LOW RESOLUTION” when starting the program.
where it says 'most MAC models' would suggest its not compatiable with all MACs

What advice for Polar Alignment when we can't see Polaris?
    - My view of the North is totally obstructed by houses and trees.
-- Those trees are nice except for polar alignment.

If you've not got a clear sight of Polaris or close to it, Drift alignment maybe your only option

It blows my mind how complex this is compared to using Sharpcap.

Yeah, I’ve actually switched to Sharpcap as of about 10-12 months ago now.

Rotate star, rotate nice and good, in other words, those stars are a double wide surprise. With Astronomy anything is possible.

Not sure what that all means TBH

@@HogarthsAstrophotography It means that we have reached maximum SPEED. Time to hop down the ol' bunny trail to give those stars some freshly squeezed lemon juice right in the eyes.

Does the arrow indicate which direction the stars should move on the screen or the OTA? In other words, which button on a hand controller do you press - left or right?
    Thank you!

I'm curious how you initially set up your mount. Did you just get it close to polar alignment?

    • @HogarthsAstrophotography

Dave Vachon yes I use a compass to point roughly True North (not magnetic north) and I also use visual markers I’ve left in my garden. As long as Polaris is in view near the middle or even off , you can align , even if only one of the reference stars is visible, as long as it’s still visible when you rotate RA.

Can we use a phone (are there phone apps?) with the Pole master to do auto polar align or does it have to be a laptop?

I have tried to use Polemaster with my new laptop. It always freezes. There does not seem to be a fix. It works ok with my desk top but not my new state of the art Acer laptop. I have tried all the usual corrections but it still does not work. There is no fix for this. Buyer beware!

I have no doubt that this is great device. Unfortunately I can't justify paying £290 for something I can have for £10. Sharpcap pro subscription is fracture of the price of PoleMaster. Also, this is not controversial statement if I say that main imaging camera will be way better in terms of quality than small polar alignment dedicated unit hence precision and accuracy of alignment is likely to be at least as good if not better than this delivered by highly overpriced device.
