    Was driving along a local Street one Sunday.. group of people gathered around an elderly lady laying on the sidewalk.. apparently she fell.. I grabbed. A mylar blanket I kept in my trunk and put it over the lady to keep her warm.. one of the local residents had a pillow they put under her head.. until the ambulance arrived. I keep a mylar blanket and all my ifak kits

    IMHO, this is one of the better kit configs I’ve seen, I’d carry it (I’m an EMT-b and woofer FWIW). Great job.
    *One small suggestion (take it or leave it): store the kit in a tyvek envelope (I cut down / modify Fedx and USPS shipping envelopes). They make for a great protection layer and gloves won’t get pierced accidentally in your pack if stored in tyvek. The envelopes take a ton of abuse, also make for great tinder collecting, are super light weight, and compress down. --> 2 cents.
    Ps- I agree with the Corpsmen regarding the PPE and needle.

  • @ryewhiskeyfan5946

    An observation from a Navy Corpsman, Paramedic, and now an ED RN. Everything to be used on someone else should be inside the kit. The gloves are inside the kit and it is presumed that PPE will be used first. You would not want to expose the injury without gloves, nor apply a tourniquet. For personal use it's different. You cannot be infected by your own blood. It's a great kit. I think it would be better if the shears and space blanket where inside already. Thanks for including the flat pack tape. Maybe a second version with a decompression needle for those with advanced skills. Thank you for your service and for your great content.
    P.S. The Covrt 18 is still the best get home bag. Loved your video on it.

      I agree blanket and scissors should be included with or in the kit but they’re cheap and easy to find. I would also add blue gloves rather than black so it’s easier to see blood on them during examination...or any colour rather than black but avoiding latex of course

    Solid kit without the fluff. Kudos on including full-size Hyfin chest seals instead of the small compact ones usually pushed in other kits. The real 4-inch trauma dressing (ETD) included here is often not more expensive, but thicker, stronger and longer (tail) than the usual "mini-4-inch" ones that are too often included in trauma kits. Good to see real medical tape instead of high-speed duct tape, even though this particular product is a pain to use with gloves compared with a roll of 3M Durapore tape. You can use tape with the gauze to secure eye injuries and other minor-medium injuries without the need for pressure. I thought that clothing and sleeping bags would make it optional to include a mylar blanket. The mini mylar blankets included in most kits is absolutely useless and barely covers and wraps around the upper body anyway.

    • @GrayBeardedGreenBeret
      @GrayBeardedGreenBeret  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use it to supplement my clothing and shelter, that's really it. I can drape this inside a lean-to and take advantage of the reflection from the fire, but I never use these as my main form of shelter. Too flimsy.

    Mine just arrived on Monday 8/3 out here in SoCal. You did a great job on this kit Josh! I already have a few kits that I put together myself plus or minus a few items. I thought this one was very well put together IMHO. (Critics can take that with a grain of salt, I'm not a medical professional). Anyone just looking for a great IFAK that doesn't want to try and piece one out themselves will not be disappointed in this. The price point was very reasonable and honestly if you're out there playing with sharp pointy objects, you're crazy not to have this equipment and some training to go with it. This along with your training videos are just awesome! Keep up the great work and stay safe!

    I'm a staff nurse with some trauma experience.
    I remember reading a research article a few years ago that said that space blankets were not just for hypothermia. This article stated that applying a space blanket to a casualty, regardless of the weather, resulted in decreased mortality rates.
    So, if your treating a gunshot victim in the middle of June, after you've stabilised the casualty, the next thing you should do is cover the casualty in the space blanket.
    I can't find the article now unfortunately and I don't know whether this is protocol among EMS anyway, so obviously anyone would have to research this more to ensure this is safe.

    • @dougww1ectebow
      @dougww1ectebow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In EMS we carried space blankets. They're great to keep a casualty from losing heat until you can get them to a heated environment, ambulance, whatever.

    • @RubleInnawoods
      @RubleInnawoods 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hypothermia relates more to injury in medicine than to temperature outdoors. Remember the Lethal Triad

    • @DontGoToChurchDrunk
      @DontGoToChurchDrunk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my area it is appropriate to cover the patient when they're exhibiting signs of shock. Conservation of body heat is so important, it can actually save lives.
      In the prehospital setting, treatment for shock includes: high flow oxygen, cover the patient with a blanket, have them laying in a supine position, and rapid transport to a hospital that meets the needs of the emergency.
      Hope this helps anyone that stumbles upon my comment.

    I am so happy Cpl Kelly gave you a shout out. I watched a couple videos and immediately subbed. As an older woman, are there supplies I should have that may be different than the average say, get home bags. I do keep trekking poles because my balance is not what it was when younger. My longest journey in a shtf would be about 50 miles. For me, that is minimum a week.

  • @RubleInnawoods
    @RubleInnawoods 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    As an EMS personnel + avid preparedness and medical preparedness endorser, you did a great think by getting this kit together for people. You’ve got MARCHE covered, minus hypothermia. I would put Mylar blankets in there. Remember that the Lethal Triad (Hypothermia, coagulopathy, and Metabolis Acidosis) strike in any weather conditions. Warm weather won’t keep them alive alone.

    I will add, DO NOT I repeat DO NOT use non vented chest seals on a sucking wound unless you have a decompression needle. You can use vented seals anywhere. Non-vented seals or improvised seals do not or do not adequately release air and pressure from a sucking chest wound, therefore with lung leak you’re creating Tension Pneumothorax.
    Only seal sucking wounds with vented seals, or do entry (chest) vented and exit (back) occlusive.
    A sucking and blowing chest wound can be left unsealed or sealed with vented seals. Again, do not use non-vented anything.

    GUESS WHY you should NEVER use black gloves for First Aid? Because it DOES NOT show blood, ie if there are smaller, more traumatic wounds that need treatment.
    ALL items should be unwrapped & prepped for immediate use. EXCEPT gauze and anything sterile.
    Stage your tourniquets ready for application, ie: unwrapped & fully extended.
    Finally, trauma shears: IF you buy a $5 pair online, cut a piece of denim BEFORE you need them. Chances are they won't. POINT: buy a decent pair of name brand shears.
