  • Few weeks ago I was lucky to get my hands on this antique hand cranked drill press. As I am currently preparing to move my workshop to a new offgrid location, hand tools are more important to me than ever before.
The drill was very rusty and all the moving parts were more or less stuck. First I had to disassemble the whole thing. Than I cleaned everything, using steel and brass brushes, sandpaper and lot of WD40. I also polished the axles, corrected any bends. Fortunately, no parts were missing and the drill works great again. I used clamps to hold the drill down when drilling, becouse I am going to move the drill elsewhere. It is supposed to be fastened to a bench using bolts.
Using drill press (even hand cranked one) has some advatages over hand drills (both electric and hand cranked ones). Using drill press it is easier to drill at 90°. You can use more force thanks to the press screw, allowing you to drill through mild steel without having acces to electricity.

Awesome find. Maybe it could be hooked to a bicycle crank, for power.

Nice restoration, thanks for sharing. My wife's going to curse you lol because you've given me the inspiration to dig out my old hand cranked and have a play too , though it's in a bit worse condition than yours( well ok its rough lol )so it may take a while.

Thank you! Well unless you are missing some major parts, the restoration should be ok. Can´t speak for the wife though :)
