It must be a vacuum port for some models. In theory it wont come off because its sucking against it. I've just ordered a new weber so I'll check to see if it has one as well.
The new one is It’s probably made to fit other models with that extra piece, I’d just cap it off with something that can’t be pushed out and keep doing what you’re doing
