I mostly remember how good the roman state was at fucking over citizen-soldiers. You get to campaign in Corsica for years on end, while your farm gets repossessed at home and you can't even find work because cheap slave labour is doing it instead. The state starts to give you grain handouts just so you won't starve or rebell.

Antiquity, the early modern period or the napoleonic times can have what we'd consider blatant corruption that people of that time considered normal. The bit that doesn't work for them is when the army starts to grow into this system. Soldiers aren't loyal to the state itself at times, they are loyal to their officer-patron who rewards them.
