I mostly remember how good the roman state was at fucking over citizen-soldiers. You get to campaign in Corsica for years on end, while your farm gets repossessed at home and you can't even find work because cheap slave labour is doing it instead. The state starts to give you grain handouts just so you won't starve or rebell.

@@Janibek35 For them, it can just be the way life works. It's natural that informal patron-client ties run through society, it's what keeps things together. Antiquity, the early modern period or the napoleonic times can have what we'd consider blatant corruption that people of that time considered normal.
The bit that doesn't work for them is when the army starts to grow into this system. Soldiers aren't loyal to the state itself at times, they are loyal to their officer-patron who rewards them.

Considerably less neofascists in these comments.
The things I remember most of Rome is the institutionalised nepotism and superstition.

@@DISTurbedwaffle918 You must observe the holy days and the signs. The world is a place where the gods show favor and disfavor and you can divine which by reading chicken intestines or something. All the way up to state level.
Patronage is normal, a force that binds society together across class. I support you and you consider me your patron. There's nothing wrong when you give me support back. It's stuff we'd consider blatant corruption, and these folks just see it as normal operations.

@@SusCalvin no one intelligent models their ideals on the Roman Republic, we model off the Roman Empire, which bamned pretty much everything you just criticized

@@DISTurbedwaffle918 Like when corrupt guards units swap out the emperor because they want better pay?

@@SusCalvin no, more like when elite trained soldiers remove every corrupt Emperor without fail
