  • COCKER SPANIEL Pros And Cons.
When it comes to the Pros And Cons of Cocker Spaniels, it can simply come down to personal preference.
Cocker Spaniels are very friendly dogs but you may have heard of Cocker Rage Syndrome. While I have never experienced this rage myself with any of my Cockers, it does exist so keep it in mind.
Of course, a Cocker Spaniel's temperament will vary from dog to dog and the environment in which they are raised.
Many people report problems with their Cocker Spaniel biting but again, this can be a problem with any breed of dog, not just a Cocker.
Cockers are prone to some health problems, especially with their ears. This is down to the sheer size of them and unfortunately can't be helped but can be kept under control with regular cleaning and care.
Some Cocker Spaniel Problems won't even be a problem to some people while others may find they can't stand the smell of their ears for example.

If I'm crying in my room with the door closed, he'll come and whine outside for me to open it (he just knows that I'm going through something) and he'll come and jump up and down until I let him lick my tears. @Leetye We are living in the End times as prophesied in the book of Revelation in the Word of God. This world is passing away quickly towards the New World Order, One World Government and One World Religion - The Anti Christ Beast system. The world is dying.. There is an urgency.. *No man, institution or government can save us from what is coming.* . PLEASE do not be deceived! Death and destruction are upon us! ♡ There is good news, and that is what I want to share! There is a Blessed hope in Jesus Christ, Who will come down and meet and rescue all those who have put their faith and trust in Him in what is called the Rapture event. They will be saved from the judgement of God upon evil which will pour down on this earth very shortly. Those that have not put their trust and faith in Him will be here for the Great Tribulation of death and horrific destruction. You don't want to be here.. ♡
Without Jesus the penalty of sin is death - eternal condemnation in hell. Mark 10:18 says "No one is good--except God alone.". However, John 3:16 says, For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting. " ♡♡♡ God's LOVE for us is beyond human comprehension. He wants you to come to Him and be saved! ♡♡♡

*The Gospel of Jesus Christ* ♡♡♡
Today is the day of Salvation: Why would anyone put off the most important decision they could ever make in their lives concerning eternal life? If you die today are you going to heaven? 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 - The apostle Paul tells us what the gospel is: "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.
Gospel means "good news." Your debt has been paid, the death penalty has been paid, you are free. Here's the Gospel of Jesus Christ: That Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. Jesus brought in a little child as a living object lesson to show who enters the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3 - Jesus said: "Unless you become like this little child you will not enter the kingdom of heaven." This is how to be saved, it is simply child like, as simple as
      *ABC's of Salvation*

*A* - Admit that you are a sinner. This is where that godly sorrow leads to genuine repentance for sinning against a righteous God and there is a change of heart, we change our mind and God changes our hearts and regenerates us from the inside out. Romans 3:10 - As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one." Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (We are all born sinners which is why we must be born spiritually in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven). Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The bad news is that the wages of sin is death, in other words our sin means that we have been given a death sentence, we have the death penalty hanging over our heads, that's the bad news. But here's the good news: The good news is that the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Ephesians 2:8-9 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast.
*B* - Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and that God raised Jesus from the dead. This is trusting with all of your heart that Jesus Christ is who he said he was. Romans 10:9-10 - That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
*C* - Call upon the name of the Lord. Every single person who ever lived since Adam will bend their knee and confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Lord of lords and the King of kings. Romans 14:11 - For it is written: "As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God." Don't wait until later - do this now. -- we are not guaranteed tomorrow. Romans 10:13 - For "whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me." John 3:16 ~ For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting.
♡ *SALVATION PRAYER* ~ ♡♡♡ "Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner, and I know I deserve the consequences of my sin. I repent and turn from my unbelief to belief in You. I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins, shed your blood, was buried, and rose from the dead. I have decided to place my faith in You, trusting only in Your shed blood as sufficient to save my soul and take me to Heaven. Thank you, Jesus for saving me! Amen. ♡♡♡

Being gun dogs that flush and retrieve birds, Cockers are very smart and focused on their humans, very eager to please.
I've noticed my Cockers tend to be very polite compared to my other dogs. They wait their turn for treats and petting patiently. They just act more polite compared to my Pugs and Chihuahuas. Only dogs that out do their politeness are my Great Danes.
I always have a pack of dogs and I say my Cockers aren't just the beauty of the gang, they are also the brains of the operation.

I have to agree with the food aspect, they have all been greedy. The only Cocker I have ever had that wouldn't pinch food was when I was younger and lived with my parents. I came home one night after a night out drinking and had a takeaway pizza. I woke up in the morning, the pizza box was on the bedroom floor with the lid open, 3 or 4 slices left in the box and my poor Cocker Spaniel was sat there crying and drooling but hadn't touched it. I've had several Cockers of various, colours, all English. I've never experienced the rage syndrome you spoke of. Most I've had, and those other people I've known have, have been Tealeafs. Our Fudge should have been named Fagan, as he's a hoarder, a quick, sly thief who will be off with your tea towels, knickers, socks, tea shirts, cardboard, paper, anything that he can get. He's easy to take stuff from him, even though he grumbles, it's a game for him. Every Cocker I've owned has had a tendency to be extremely territorial, this can lead to fits of barking if not taken in hand.(like most dogs) The pro of this is, for a smallish breed, they have a large powerful bark, and will guard the car, pram, child or you to the death. Their love and loyalty goes that deep.
They sulk, every Cocker I've had has sulked, hating to be left behind, or out of the family fun. I've never had a greedy one, but, I've had many a fussy eater. Most I've had lived up to 10 to 13 years, loss to Cancer or Stroke being the main culprit to them heading for the Rainbow Bridge.
They're good with other pets, we have several rescue cats, and he loves his Feline friends, especially Boots who follows him around the house, and sleeps with him.
Fudge is my Assistance Dog, He is Rambunctious, Gregarious, Funny, lLoveable, Naughty and Brave. However, as soon as his harness is on, or he's told he's 'working', he becomes all business. Even if I have to forgive him for the odd sock, that makes its way from the washing machine to his bed once in a while! Lol!

I'm 55 and not only grew up with Cockers but have had several through the years. I found the list of pros and cons to be fair. I've heard of rage, but as the commentator stated, have never seen it, nor do I know of anyone who has. My dogs have been with me through the ups and downs and have made some situations easier to take. I have a wall of photos of those that have passed, the memories always bring a smile.
If you're thinking of getting one for the first time, be prepared for a handful, a loving handful, but a handful none the less.

I lost my black cocker spaniel to cancer 14 years ago and I still find myself crying sometimes thinking about his sweet face. He had the cocker rage syndrome, it is exactly like you described. I would stay for example on my PC and he would sleep by my legs under the table, if anyone would approach (no matter if it was a member of the family or not) he would start growling agressively and jump to attack. Talking to him would not do anything, it was like a fog cloud was on his brain. We would normally just leave him be for about a minute and the rage would suddenly stop, his eyes would clear and it was like he didn't even remember he did anything. Very energetic and athletic dog, he would carry wood logs heavier than him. Also, very smart. I managed to count over 100 words that he would recognize.

I'm a cat person, but I did have one dog in my life, and it was an English Cocker Spaniel. I can say that all said in this video is true. As for my dog specifically, she hated kids and would hide from them all the time, but she would try to be as nice as possible. As in she wouldn't go to bite them if they didn't pester her A LOT. Same goes for any puppies or small dogs. My dog was chique and loved herself a tall gentleman dog.
She was really smart, learned commands, and we groomed her at home as much as we could and we did well, I think.
Other cons specific to my dog were that she absolutely couldn't be left alone. She wailed and cried and whined. And she also cried and wailed and whined when we came home. Also, please, don't feed cocker spaniels from the table. They are perpetually hungry, and you won't do them any good while stuffing them constantly.
Other than that, it's a good breed, really friendly and cute and smart. Just don't spoil them!

  • @sarahmac27
    @sarahmac27 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Mine has a con where she reacts very aggressively to the cats, but other times couldn’t care less about them so I’m always (as are the cats!) on watch for that and have given them their own safe areas. A pro though, she is a giver. If you come home or sometimes just enter the room she has to find a gift and bring it to you. We call it her tribute.😂 It’s the most adorable thing when she excitedly squeaks and wags her whole back end as she brings you a manky old sock.

I’ve been lucky to have many cockers, both as personal pets and as fosters. Venus, (my first) was the best dog in the world, blind at two and not a hesitation to anything in life. Her companion, Mr. Zippy, was a rescue from an abuse situation and was a beautiful pure black cocker that became the most fun to ride with. Both lived to 14, and passed in my arms…tragic…then came Buzzby…had him 10 years (he was a rescue at 4), and we travelled all over the country and he helped train many rescues. He was in an accident at 14 and his passing affected me greatly…now, my best friend Bailey is my constant companion and is a perfect example of the breed. I love all dogs but cocker spaniels are the ones that have made my life so great….RIP Venus, Mr. Zippy, and the monster spaniel that was Buzzby!!

I have a cocker and she's mental, she's always ready to go, you could go for a 15 mile walk and she will be still ready to go. Also greedy, the cons on this video are spot on. They're extremely loyal and very affectionate. But if you're not careful they can become quite aggressive. If you get a cocker make sure you socialise them as much as possible when young. But with the right upbringing they're a fab dog.

It comes out of nowhere and when it's over he acts like he has no idea what happened. I have learned to live with it as it only happens with me, his owner. And I love him so much. I got him at 8 weeks from a very well established, (32 years), breeder. I wish there was something I could do, but I haven't found anything yet. We got a Cocker from people whose baby started to have allergic reactions to dogs ...
So my mom took her in last year, at less than a year old. Very very energetic, and also very stubborn. But i soon realized that when i put my foot down, as in laying down the law, she became more pliable, but only some ... With some training i know she will be very obedient.
One thing of her that i realized, was that of all the dogs that we have owned, she was the only one that will actually look up and bark at the birds sitting on tree
    branches or telephone wires.
But she loves to play very much.
I never thought in a million years, that i will a take like in a Cocker Spaniel.
    They are very very intelligent.

Had a small buff decades ago as a youth.
Smartest dog ever. Super agile. She would "piddle" we very excited. Mostly when I hadn't seen her in a few days, but others in the family too. 3 kids, 3 dogs to raise.
Of course, mine could climb. I mean ladders, trees, chain link fence. Ya She would smack our lever style doorknobs in the house to let herself out. Had to change a few doors handles to solve that.
While I was a good shot, I didn't take to bird hunting like my stepdad and brother.
I did go out pheasant (my favorite hunt) and should natural sway smelling and stop before a bush. Turn her head and look at me...that look.."hey I want to flush!" and "GO!" Bird flushed and in the bag. She never had a problem with loudness. Many a Saturday morning I would wake up and my dog had been stole to go birding. I had to put my foot down on Goose. My argument was she would try to get the goose out of the water, and at 15" and just 23 lbs it was too dangerous. I won that battle at least lol.
Dang it. I loved that dog.
RiP : A touch of HEATHER.

Based on my 5 1/2-year-old cocker, they will bark at any animal that enters the yard. They are surprisingly fast and will track, catch and kill rabbits. Mine has killed 3 of them. They will eat everything in sight so be careful not to overfeed them. They are the sweetest most loveable dogs ever and absolutely love people but they hate being alone. In my family we used to have a cocker Spaniel.
The third one, who arrived when I was at the hardest stage of my life, came as a gift from my mother and brother. The guy in question was a black and tan cocker (a mixture of brown and red) with a mask on his face and chest. I called him Argos and with time we became inseparable. Argos lived 13 happy years and unfortunately my mother had to put him down, as he was suffering a lot from various illnesses due to his age. Several years have passed since then, but even so, Argos will always be a part of me, his memory is still alive and beating in my heart.
It is true that cockers have temperament and more strength than one would think, but in return, they have an unlimited capacity to give love, loyalty and fun.

years ago I got to look after a retired stud male cocker called Glenlionel Copperglow. He was a bit fat, but had the classic cocker temperament. The reason I got him was that his owners were getting new kennels built so they aggisted all their dogs. The first day I tried to take him for a walk he struggled to walk 200 metres so I carried him back home. I worked on his fitness gradually and within two months he would accompany me on on my 5 kilometre non-stop run along the hard sand at the beach in front of our house. When his owners came to collect him they couldn't believe his condition so they let start breeding again. He lived for another three happy years.

I had a cocker-yorkie mix for 16 years. She was SOOOOO cute. Basically a mini cocker spaniel and all black up till she got very old. Even at like 10 years old people thought she was a puppy still. She was sassy and ruled the house, that’s for sure. she was definitely a people dog. Didn’t like other dogs at all but did like cats and loved people. (Most of the time lol) I miss her so much. 💔 if/when I get another dog hopefully it will either be a weenie or a cocker. 😂

Cockers are a very special breed, very different than any other I've ever encountered. I've found I can't live without one in my life. Short story.
I've been raising, training and just plain loving the hell out of Cockers for the last 40 years. During those 40 years my and my parent's house had multiple Cockers and I groomed the entire pack, up to 10 of them at one point.. Eventually my parents passed, their Cockers passed, so did mine until I was down to 1 cocker.
I started adopting short hair breed cuz groom was getting too hard on my aging, beaten up body.
But I still had my pretty chocolate Cocker, Sadie... Until one day I didn't. I swore, no more long hair dog breeds, have to save money on grooming.
Yeah, right.... I lasted one month and flipped out not having that special energy and personality that is unique to Cockers. There were none in the shelters or local rescues or breeders so ended up on AKC breeders page and fell in love with a little female chocolate in OK.
I packed up my Chihuahua and we traveled from Vegas to some hick town in OK, not far from where my family was from, another hick town in TX.
Zoey, my gorgeous baby was perfect. She looked almost like a statue or painting of a Cocker puppy. Her first Nick name was Baby Doll. Smart as a whip, wicked sense of humor, always happy and up beat with tail that never stops wagging.
Yep, no doubt about it, it is impossible for me to live in a house with out having a Cocker Spaniel there to fill it with there special brand of love.

There are now 2 types of cockers. Workers and show types. Workers are the extreme high energy type ( I am disabled and have walking problems, and show types are much lower energy and better for working families.
Rage was notorious-- especially with nervous ones-- a long time ago but good quality breeders have got rid of that along with a raft of genetic issues, the constant DNA checks of puppies being the reason for their high price.
Last being disabled and utilising their original breed traits they make fantastic assistance dogs. Especially in modern smaller homes with smaller gardens. They are fabulous as a breed. A great all rounder ( the show type, unless you really want an outdoor life! Check the kennel club breed standard for this and other onfo).

Hi Alex. Thanks for the reply. We talk about working and show Cockers on our blog. Our Guinness was a show Cocker Spaniel but sadly passed away last month, bless him.

I also have trouble walking for more than a block now. I've hired a couple of teenagers to come and walk them They don't care who does it...the more people coming to the house for them is much better in their eyes.

I’ve been wanting to get a cocker spaniel, I think they’re cute 🥰 , 🤗 cuddly and they’re sweethearts. I’ve wanted one ever since I watched lady and the tramp in my childhood. I would make sure they get lots of excerise, like I would do if I ever get a big dog and my bichon can tag along so Max doesn’t feel left out.

I grew up w/a Cocker. I ❤ him. We had an American Cocker. Since he was American, he was considered bracacephalic since American Cockers have Pugs in their blood line. It makes them adorable because their snout is shorter & they look like stuffed animals. 😻
But because of this, they can have respiratory problems as well as snoring.
Coffee (our Cocker) was buff w/a white star blaze on his forehead.
Sadly, Cocker Rage is a real thing. It is mostly seen in Cockers that have too much in-line breeding & in backyard breeders. Make certain that you get their papers!! If the Cockers are from a rescue, ask about their history. It’s not common, but it’s crucial to know this: they can hurt small children, cats & dogs/ puppies that are smaller than them. We didn’t have this issue: he became friends w/my half lop rabbit after he got over from being jealous. Cocker Rage is treated with anti-seizure meds.
Cockers are NOT for people who are busy & away from home all the time. Even being with a bonded mate & other pets they get along with, they still need their humans. If that’s the case, you’ll have 2 cockers and/or King Charles, an Ocicat & Bengal all waiting for you at the door, waiting & whining for you outside the bathroom. They are very needy & are velcro dogs (King Charles Cavalier, Bengal cats & Ocicats are also velcro pets). Along w/ being social, they can suffer from separation anxiety.
Another thing to keep in mind is that they can have small dog syndrome. This is a nonissue if they live or have play dates with other small dogs & toy breeds. However, if they are around medium sized (Pit Bull and some other terrier breeds) and esp. large breeds (Labs and German Shepards, etc), there can be an altercation unless the bigger dog is mellow, well trained & ignores the Cocker.
Play dates, dog parks & staying in boarding for vacations, they will put them in a small-dog category.
Like other small dogs, it takes a lot of patience for house training & controlling bladder.
They can have an excessive need of chewing.
Most Cockers who are given to shelters are because of chewing; incontinence; and people who don’t do their research & end up being surprised how needy Cockers are & say that they can’t give them the attention they need.
All of the Cons, including the ones I mentioned, have easy solutions & patience to work with your Cocker. Practice, practice, practice. Crate train when not at home if they cannot be trusted - a room in the house is another alternative.
If I end up adopting a dog, I would adopt either a Cocker, Cockapoo, King Charles Cavalier, Papillon, or Brittany.
    They’re the best.😻🫶🏽🐕❣️💞💖
