Ronnie did say in an interview with Stephen Hendry, which is online, that if he came across Selby, he was going to play his own way, and not be dragged into a Selby battle, as that's how he feels he lost to Selby in the 2014 world championship, which would have been 3 on the spin for Ronnie, having won the previous 2. He said he let himself be drawn into Selby's safety style battle, which isn't Ronnie's natural game. Selby eventually won 18-14, so this tournament, he wasn't going to let Selby dictate play, and it worked for him. If he had done similar in 2014, maybe Ronnie may have won, and would have 7 world titles, but no matter, he has 6 world's, 7 masters, 7 UK'S, that's 20 triple crown titles and 37 ranking titles, more than any other player, more centuries, more 147s, faster 147. You have to say he's the greatest ever. I know Hendry has 7 world titles, just 1 more, but as great as Hendry was, the majors, Ronnie has 20 more than Hendry, 37 ranking titles, more than Hendry, more tons, more than Hendry and more 147's. I don't believe 1 more world title makes Hendry better. He will tell you himself, that Ronnie is the greatest ever. Hendry is definitely second, and it's very close, but the statistics speak for themselves.

Ronnie had 2 choices.. Play the game 'properly' like Selby wanted him to or gamble. If he plays Selby's game he has very little chance of winning imo. I think that Ronnie lashing the balls around like he did sent a clear message to Selby 'here's a chance..take it, when you miss I'll take it' Selby then had a few opportunities that he played with trepidation, he was afraid to miss because he was unsure what the madman was gonna do next. He ended up winning that frame but it was the last frame he won.
It's similar to a game of poker where you're playing somebody who's going all-in every hand. Is that disrespectful? It's definitely frustrating because that's not how a standard game of poker 'should' go. But in the end it's their chips and if they decide that that's the optimal way to go about winning the game, then fair enough. Whether anybody else agrees with that tactic or not doesn't really matter.
I do understand Selby's frustration though but the simple fact is that Ronnie firing balls around liberated him to an extent that he was so free and therefore unable to miss a pot. There was definitely a method to his madness imo. Fascinating stuff!

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert but honestly if you snooker your opponent and they hit the ball “at a 100 miles an hour” surely that is a good thing - it means you’ve rattled your opponent (vastly improving your own chances in the frame and match). Also, as the cue ball “could go anywhere” it means you’re more likely to get an opportunity on your turn than if they played to snooker you. I had a lot of respect for Selby but I’m disappointed with this interview - I think he’s just making excuses. Understandable I suppose but remember he is supposed to be a pro and it does make him out to be a bit of a sore loser. Ronnie played an outstanding final three frames (good cue action) and at the end of the day I think Selby needs to be a bit more gracious in defeat and just say “well played”.

Mark should watch the game again. Ronnie played a couple of shots in the whole of the 33 frame match where he hit the balls hard trying to get out of a snooker. Thats his choice. Watch the sublime snooker Ronnie played in the final frame under immense pressure to get out of a snooker Mark laid. Best shot ever as it could have cost him the match but forced the mistake from Mark and allowed Ronnie to win. Mark famously took six minutes to play a single shot against John Higgins, thats gamesmanship, maybe he has forgotten that.. Ronnie won a frame in this match in less time.

That he is disappointed is understandable. But his statement is ridicolous. Playing safety as hard as he does, keeping pace low, going for snookers also when trying a pot is possible, is also a (legitimate) way to put stress on the nerves of his opponent. Going to the table and hit a cannonball is another, legitimate, way to deny and counter this psychological game, and calling this 'disrespectful' is childish.

Selby is such a sore loser. Very bitter because he was 16-14 up, thinking he was most definitely in the final, but Ronnie played absolutely amazing, with a touch of luck, to play like that 3 frames behind, with your opponent who happens to be Mark Selby only needing 1 frame, Ronnie just went for it and reeled off 3 frames to win, under immense pressure, and got himself into the final. He didn't have an easy route to the final. Ding, a former finalist, Mark Williams, 3 times champion, and had just lately won the world championship, and Mark Selby, now a 4 times world champion, the most difficult opponent. Ronnie definitely earned his 6th world title, making more ranking titles than Stephen Hendry. He was incredible.
