  • Stress is the classic ailment of the 21st century and accepted as part of our working lives. In fact, stress is generally perceived as a barometer of success. Dynamic professionals seem keen to publicise the fact that their lives are blighted by this modern anguish.
In contrast to socially acceptable moaning about minor stresses and strains, The Day I Snapped investigates what happens when the stress of working life causes a major meltdown. Linda, Elinor, Simon, Justin and Linn were pushed to the point where they were ready to ‘snap’. This is a very human account of what happens when anxiety gets too much to cope with. The story of a GP, a teacher, a social worker, a farmer and a businessman whose stress levels rendered them unable to function. How did the situation reach breaking point in the first place? How did they deal with it? How have their lives changed since?

I can relate; when I was 18 I had a breakdown and never forget being at work and crying uncontrollably. I would cry all the time for a year and couldn’t handle anything. I felt overwhelmed and sad and was facing the “ meaning of life” and uselessness of it all, at 18! I got through it, (this was way before anyone talked about this kind of stuff. ) But years later I began therapy and stayed with it for 12 years. It turned my life around. I was in dire need of empathy and understanding for my childhood trauma and it was a miracle that I found the right person to help. Here I am 66 years old, and mentally fit.

I understand this. I need a lot of mental space and when I don't get it I lose my mind. I tell people that I need space and for me to get it have to literally flip out on them. When I say leave me alone it doesn't mean try to talk to me.

@Mysasser1 same story. On the one hand, ppl want you to express your needs or mood, but when you do, they will not respect it. As if telling someone to get out of my face when all worked up already was just for jokes. And when I eventually flip on them, I must take the blame (you always flip so easily - oh, do I, though? isn't it more like you constantly try and push my boundaries or ignore my requests to leave me alone for a while?)

I'm the exact same. They really should listen and save us both the aggro. It's not rude its honest and it's me not them. Just a bit of space now n then should not be a seen as a big ask! 😒

Im experiencing this first hand where 2 years ago I burned out, but just soldiered on taking it day by day operating like a robot where I just do what Im told.
Yesterday it all just came crashing that I snapped at my wife and after i patched things up and move on. I lost all motivation in life, had suicidal thoughts and I just down right exhausted.
Your rational mind tells you to do the typical advices people give but deep down you feel you are in a cage and need to work or else you will not make ends meet.
So I now have an idea in a way how soldiers feel being stuck in the battlefield for years with no end in sight

They were absolutely right about there not being a single significant event that broke the camel's back. I broke down and got evacuated to the hospital for depression after a routine morning run, which was supposed to have filled me with endorphins and a great appetite for breakfast.

everybody claims they understand mental health but in reality they don’t and there is still huge stigma. This is just getting worse- people are overworked and miserable. Neo-capitalism (10% make it, the rest are MADE BELIEVE they can make it or it’s their fault for not making it) and consumer culture (buy, buy, buy) perpecuated by social media - we’re doomed. We totally are

Me, too. Life is always less stressful with minimal interaction with most human species. I remember the absolute dread of the weekend ending, and back to face the creepy kids at school. Listening to the radio, with fingers crossed, hoping your school would be on the list of "closed due to hazardous snow conditions". That anxiety is never forgotten, even at soon-to-be 79 years old.

Alright, bipolar people, stop taking your lithium!! Your mania which is caused by your brain chemistry will magically go away! Good doc ruined for me by that one last line, lol.
