This is the best background and current explanation of Agricole vs. Ron/Rum. Excellent video.

Hey. I think that tiki carving is hiding the microphone. Great show & so informative. Almost like a cruise through the Caribbean with history & drinks. Thanx again Ray

You would be correct! I should make a microphone look like a tiki so I wouldn't have to hide it! :-D

I enjoy your rum tasting episodes more than the self professed rum experts on TH-cam. Very fun, informative, and entertaining.

Rhum made in Guadeloupe also can be denominated agricole. It is not automatic but is possible. The main the biggest difference between an agricole rhum and majority of others is that an agricole rhum is made of the sugarcane juice and not molasses. More or less, it is like the difference between infused gin or mash distilled.
    p.s.
get your hands on a bottle of La Favorite's "La Flibuste". Mind blowing! and.........expensive :)

Martinique AND Guadeloupe are French West Indies and they produce Agricole rum. Most rums from the French West Indies are agricoles also amber and VSOPs. They have an A.O.P in Martinique not yet in Guadeloupe. Thanks for this video. Some Guadeloupe brands: Bologne, Rhum Bielle, Damoiseau

I actually just picked up a bottle of Rhum J.M. Gold at my local liquor store. I thought it was fantastic. I’ll have to try again looking for that “grassy” flavor.

    Well done for your video,
all French rums are agricultural rums that they come from Martinique, Guadeloupe as well as all the other French overseas islands, apart from a few rare exceptions, all our rums are based on pure cane juice and not molasses. congratulations for your video on VO and VSOP rums but if you find any I recommend agricultural rum XO (ages 6 years minimum) Greetings from France

Nice content, thanks. We're doing a rum tasting next week and I was searching agricoles vs what I can get my hands on here in NY which is the JM blanc or VO. The VO seems like a nice entry level. Cheers!

Kō Hana rum based out of Hawaii is an agricole, and Brazilian Cachaça is an agricole as well!

Regarding the Martinique AOC the regulations for Rhum Agricole is strict and not at all agricole because its made from sugar cane juice only

FYI, total shot count for "grassy' is 8, Okole Maluna!

  • @joshleatherguy

Rum coming out of Haiti is going to be 100% sugar cane juice whether your Rhum Barbancourt or Clairin. Also, while Brazilian Cachaça is 100% sugar cane juice, it's flavour profile is often different from rhum Agricole due to the different kinds of wood (other than oak) which are used to age it.

Have you all tried Neisson Rhum Agricole's?
I'm also in Seattle and it's hard to find stores that sell Rhum Agricole, - Clement, Rhum JM, or Neisson!
Sounds like reviews online tend to prefer Neisson over Clement or Rhum JM?

    • @TikiWithRay

It was a long and full day indeed. Thankfully, I learned to hydrate well while drinking, during my time in the USN. We got it done!
