Was lucky enough to get a short demo/discussion about this game from Alex Davy Friday night, and his enthusiasm is really infectious (as you can see in this video). Very excited for this game.
Great demo from Alex, and excellent use of showing the cards he's referring to in video post production. Really appreciate the effort. The game looks great, and appears to have excellent mechanics to give a smooth experience.
Gotta give it to the representative (developer, ive been told :D ), after probably doing this for the entire weekend he still does it full of joy and enthusiasm! Game looks really fun and the rules are just brilliant! If only this was another setting, i suffer from starwars-fatigue :/
That was a special demo for the designer, it was very important he'd be enthusiastic... The Team Covenant has a big impact on the star wars gaming geeks like me :)
Ah yes, I see :) Still, he is probably at least as exhausted as the rest of the staff and still show this amount of excitement which is a joy to watch!
The guy was great. And just as he will know it, he sold the game to me. I'm gonna get one as soon as I can. The game appeared fairly easy to learn , but difficult to master. I love that.
I can see it now, one half of the table we have Legion going on and the other half a sweet game of X-Wing. Can be just like the huge battles from the movies! I can not wait for this!!
Looks awesome. The next Fantasy Flight announcement should be the direct deposit program.... so we don't even have to worry choosing to use our money for food and bills.
Far away one of the best game report for this game! Thanks a lot for your work guys! Nice shooting and good questions at the end. Anyway, I wasn't so interest by this game still now, but now, I've to test it as soon as possible. So again, thanks ! (from a french viewer, so I hope my english isn't too bad!)
Well that looks.. exactly like I hoped it would actually! Easy enough to pick up quickly, enough depth to stay interesting. Good mix of customisation and restrictions. Quite a few different choices and mechanics (command cards and scenarios look promising). Never got into IA to a great extent as I was hoping to one day see a proper SW miniatures game - here it is, about time!
I've been struggling to find a good Miniatures game for awhile. I'm moving to Denver, CO in December, so hopefully if this game ever picks up there (and if it releases before I move) I'll be able to see if this is the one for me. Also I'm really hoping we get some cool Rebel leaders.
This game looks really cool. It appears like FFG took the play style for Warmachine and Hordes, but added their own dice and rules from Imperial Assault, X-Wing and even their old Warhammer Diskwars game (command cards). I can't wait to play this. Anyone know when its being released to the public?
The best demo of that game until now. 2 core sets, two extra commanders, about 6 extra boxes (AT-ST, Speedbikes, Rebel-Infantry, Stormtroopers and I'm sure there will be at least two more) and you can field 2 armies - ready to play with my son. 400-500 $ I guess ....
Wow I am incredibly excited for this, is there any indication of factions that will be released? Should we expect to see prequel factions as well or will it be limited to the original trilogy? It would be so cool to be able to field a whole Mandalorian Army, or a pure jedi army
So will unit add-ons come with their cards or do I have to pick those up separately? How about just a rule book like codex and forget the cards? And I hope i can replace those cheesy cardboard tokens with nice slick plastic ones like in Zombicide or Warmachine. I hope a hobby store near me gets a demo copy so I can try this out, unlike Warhammer 40k, there's no dedicated FFG stores where I can play a free demo guaranteed.
The purpose of the cards is to make your army customizable and has the same feel as xwing. With only the core set being announced at this time, there obviously aren't a lot of choices. As the game expands for instance, more force power may become available. Vader gets I think it was 3(?) powers this video said. So if you have say 8 to choose from the cards are an indicator for you and your opponent as to what you have equipped. This is especally nice because unlike 40k your army can change. It is what you see is what you get with the exception of what you see isn't glued onto your figure.
Yes, the cards will come packaged with the figures. Team Covenant and others will almost certainly make acrylic tokens for this like they do for other FFG games.
Quick question about the rules; on the second round would the AT-RT not have been out of range of Luke (ie the commander) and so have been unable to move? I know it's only a demo but I'm curious about the rules.
Jammo The distance to the commander is only relevant for handing out the order tokens with the card at the start of the round. If a unit or figure is out of range it can't be assigned an order token from the commander so it's order token must be part of the randomized draw.
will a vader model come out separately with some huge model with more upgrade cards that make him even better later on that you can only get if you buy the huge model? Because that sucked for X-wing.
Anyone have an idea of what the ideal game-size will be? For example, say the starter comes with 500 point army but the rule book suggests 1500pt? (or something like that?) I'd like to know how it compares both price and scale/army size against 40k.
Can this be played on a 3x3 table even with larger armies? Would really like to get into this but don't have space for a 6x3 table could probably got a 4x3 as the max size where I live lol. Could you play on a in-between size table if you wanted too? Such as 4x3, 5x4 etc xxx
Team Covenant fair enough :) I'm in the UK too so our houses aren't as big as American homes either so a 6*3 would literally take more than half the room up when coupled with standing space and space to place cards and dead minis etc lol
I've heard some kinda disappointed that the models are different enough from Imperial Assault ones, that they are not cross compatible, which is unfortunate.
The fact that even the small vehicles are so tough makes me wonder about the AT-ST. Presumably that will have innate heavy cover or something? Thats gonna be bonkers. You already need a crit to hit the AT-RT then an AT-AT has to be basically invincible. Still, hope they make huge/colossal figures for the game
I thought I read somewhere that tournament were going to be 1000pts and I think you were playing with about 400pts. So, any word on planned releases beyond the starter box?
So what's the point of "Issuing orders" if you just pick which unit you want to move... at any time? He put his storm troopers, and vader as his issued orders, then flipped his token to move a different group? Am I missing something?
Imagine that you have 8 possible units to move. You play the ambush initiative card that gives you control of 1. The other 7 units are randomized, so you have no idea which unit you are going to be activating when you pull from the stack. In this scenario, Zach assigned control to 2 of his 4 units, and the two random units were both Corps types (Stormtroopers) so the results of the "random" pull were obvious. In a full scale game, it will be much more significant!
You random draw types of command tokens. So if you want to move your heavy vehicle, but you draw a trooper token... tough, you can't move your vehicle yet. Issuing orders lets you get around that a bit, by allowing you to make sure your vehicle can move first, if you wish. After you've issued all your orders, you're back to random draw for the rest of your units until the end of the round.
The speeder bike guy aiming behind is cool as a static set piece, but it's weird as a game piece. The firing arc doesn't include behind, and it just looks like he's not paying attention to the battle.
Obsthunter69 ah ok so that's simply wrong. Lord of the rings/the Hobbit has a bigger franchise and is also much better than this game. And you shouldn't forget a Song of Ice and Fire and Harry Potter (which will be released this fall). There has also been Batman and Marvel/DC before.
+Léon K. I Never said that lotr isnt a big francise or Thatchers tabletop Game is Bad. I actually love ist and got around 600 miniatures of Games Workshop in my possesion. I was criticising this guy for saying that Star Wars Legion is the First game of this kind of a big francise
The only part I don't like is the randomness of turn order after the first two actions of the round. Those initiative pips should represent what happens NEXT as a neat ability and then both players alternate resolving all their units however they please. Forcing each player to stack their decision tree makes since from a "Luke can only give orders so fast" standpoint but really take over the outcome of the game which limits engagement. Get rid of this and I'll play the game. NEVERMIND I spoke too soon. Character cards mitigate this effect very cleverly and the mission setup system is beautiful. I must play this game.
...and I was wondering what I was going to do with the kids play table. Now I have the solution - add sand and you get an instant Tatooine play table for Star Wars Legion.
This was a really nice play though. Many of the mechanics are very family to other FFG games. There seems to be an appropriate level of genre fluff. I have to admit that, while I really like X-wing, I am getting tired of all the chards and special rules. The game doesn't seem to be about the ships any more but about the cards. I sure wish they had stuck to the same figure scale as either the old Star Wars miniatures game or Imperial Assault. Seems sort of Games Workshopy to not be able to sue all the old figures along with the new ones.
I like the movement system. At first I thought the graphics on the cards were to small and difficult to decipher without a manual but as with all games FFG or WotC for that matter the design & art is top notch and in some cases elegant. I watched half of it so far. one thing I would wonder is how much terrain comes with the boxed set besides most likely the barriers and in reality the game will be played on a flat surface unless you're a mini war gamer. he can only say so much that's true but those are fundamental to the gameplay. unless I missed it. the other thing is you couldn't have a speeder bike flanking on the other side of the board. all units must stay together? I couldn't help but think about the comment I made on your first gen con x-wing demo in hindsight that was ground zero for what you had no idea would come ; MTFBWY
One major question I have here. How is competitive play intended to be played out? With 2 very clear sides does it mean we would have to build both sides and play both or build both and play one? Or would you play Vader vs Vader if that's what was brought to the table?
Team Covenant thanks for the reply. That is what I was thinking also. I do think though that it does take something away from the game having the same team be able to fight itself in a Star Wars setting. Competitive play is a special beast though. I am also assuming there will be Organised Play support. With the death of the LCG there will be a slot of time open at the world events etc.
First impressions are it seems more like a star wars sales train than a good game mechanically. A lot of cards on the table at once. Movement seems maybe too easy because of how freeform it is
Well I'm sold. Guess, I'll have to prep my wallet. I'll finally be able to put some of my miniature terrain to use again. I wonder what else comes in the starter box, or if they'll sell some of the terrain themselves. I have zero sci fi terrain, so that could get pricy.
I love how people are automatically sold on anything FFG release lol. "Oh there goes my wallet again". No offence guys, I just find it funny. Any chance you guys can review games from other publishers? It seems to be wall to wall FFG reviews.
If it ain't broke don't fix it! FFG has some problems, but they absolutely nail flavor, theme and "feel" of the game every single time. From ANR to Star Wars Rebellion, every game I play from FFG has been nothing but a great experience.
More to come from GenCon, including Eric Lang on CMON, Colby Dauch with Plaid Hat's new releases, and an amazing little game called Element by Rather Dashing. We do tend to enjoy FFG's approach, but other publishers do often get our attention. Point of clarification - Cover maxes out at 2 (Heavy).
Team Covenant Offline Battlefront
Is it as good as the original miniatures from wizard of the coast
Was lucky enough to get a short demo/discussion about this game from Alex Davy Friday night, and his enthusiasm is really infectious (as you can see in this video).
Very excited for this game.
We might need to buy at least two of these core sets... for starters!
I agree--it seems only Luke and Vader would be redundant models. Two seems likely.
KAM1138a or you and your gaming mate buy a set and exchange the models of the side you want. Looks good... and I'm defiantly interested.
You know its an FFG game when there is not enough dice
I'm sure a pack of 6D8 is only $20.99
Seriously guys. Great Job with the cinematography and post work on what was a live demo shoot. And Alex does a great job as well.
Looks really fun and fast paced. Honestly I've been waiting 12 years for a decent Star Wars tabletop game and this looks like it just might be it :3
Great demo from Alex, and excellent use of showing the cards he's referring to in video post production. Really appreciate the effort. The game looks great, and appears to have excellent mechanics to give a smooth experience.
Best overview of the game so far.
Gotta give it to the representative (developer, ive been told :D ), after probably doing this for the entire weekend he still does it full of joy and enthusiasm! Game looks really fun and the rules are just brilliant! If only this was another setting, i suffer from starwars-fatigue :/
That is Alex Davy, the lead designer of the game!
Designers don't normally demo, so he's probably tired from other work, but excited to actually get to play a game.
That was a special demo for the designer, it was very important he'd be enthusiastic... The Team Covenant has a big impact on the star wars gaming geeks like me :)
Ah yes, I see :)
Still, he is probably at least as exhausted as the rest of the staff and still show this amount of excitement which is a joy to watch!

I wasn't so excited when I saw one of the other demo videos, but here it actually looks really cool. Might have to get this after all :/
Awaiting the unboxing video already!
Looks awesome. The next Fantasy Flight announcement should be the direct deposit program.... so we don't even have to worry choosing to use our money for food and bills.
I wasn't sure about this game, but watching this....im won over. Everything is better with Steven and Zac.
Thank you Mat!
Great video guys I love your professionalism. You sold me on Star Wars Destiny and X wing and this looks very tempting indeed.
I could totally see wookie armies, droid armies, gungans, even a rancore 😍
If they do clones and droids, I'm in.
I need my Ewoks!!!
Josh Freeman mando life.
fantastic editing, subbed just for you guys throwing the cards and stuff up on the screen
Can't wait for this week's podcast to hear Zach's opinion on this game!
Well that certainly was worth waiting a day for! You guys are NOT Bums! Great job gang, and thanks for being you 🌟💜❗
Fantastic video TC. Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts.
SOOO excited about this game! I'm already planning terrain to build.
Ross
As long as I get a new job before this game comes out I am getting this game, it looks awesome!
Looks like a nice combination of X-Wing and wh40k.
Still by faaaar the Best Video about Legion
28:18 What a cool shot
31:25 And they keep coming
32:40 I need this game
Update: I have this game now
Far away one of the best game report for this game! Thanks a lot for your work guys!
Nice shooting and good questions at the end.
Anyway, I wasn't so interest by this game still now, but now, I've to test it as soon as possible.
So again, thanks !
(from a french viewer, so I hope my english isn't too bad!)
Your English is nearly perfect! Thank you for the kind words.
Damn it's going to be so tough deciding between Legion and 40k as my first miniature hobby attempt. Both look awesome and fun to play!
Tough choice indeed!
54:45 was hilarious. This is pretty much how I sound when I get into rules-resolving mode.
I'm really excited about this :)
Can't wait!!! Already pre-ordered.
Great job guy's as usual !
I hope to see aquire expanding of units/ models available for eachside, as I don't have the need to play with the iconic mary-sue's...
I wonder if attacks cancel actions. After Luke charged, should he still have an action left to move away? 29:45
Luke did Move -> Move -> Free Attack. First move is around 28m mark.
Team Covenant yes, you're right!
Well that looks.. exactly like I hoped it would actually! Easy enough to pick up quickly, enough depth to stay interesting. Good mix of customisation and restrictions. Quite a few different choices and mechanics (command cards and scenarios look promising). I'm so going to be cheating on 40k with this game .....
I want an army of Tusken Raiders!
This game looks really cool. It appears like FFG took the play style for Warmachine and Hordes, but added their own dice and rules from Imperial Assault, X-Wing and even their old Warhammer Diskwars game (command cards). I can't wait to play this. Anyone know when its being released to the public?

Uncertain on those fronts, but the possibilities with Star Wars are nearly endless.

Admiral Akbar sez, "We don't have white dice to represent firepower of that magnitude!"
47:22 during second move action, couldn't he get the free attack again?
He clarifies at one point that the free attack still counts as your one attack per round.
OK thanks, that makes sense.
Now that this is coming out I wander if FF is going to come out with there own painting system?
They partnered with Army Painter for Runewars. I bet they will continue that relationship.
Really great video guys! This earned a new sub!
I'd like to know who made the terrain?
Quick question about the rules; on the second round would the AT-RT not have been out of range of Luke (ie the commander) and so have been unable to move?
I know it's only a demo but I'm curious about the rules.
Jammo The distance to the commander is only relevant for handing out the order tokens with the card at the start of the round. If a unit or figure is out of range it can't be assigned an order token from the commander so it's order token must be part of the randomized draw.
Star Wars Legion and The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings Miniatures games are all I want.
Love it!
Did he forget the compulsory move for the speeders at 23:50?
Anyone have a link to building those trees?
Isn't Imperial Assault already has Rebels and Luke and Vader? I'd like to now the Team Covenant opinion on this game.
will a vader model come out separately with some huge model with more upgrade cards that make him even better later on that you can only get if you buy the huge model? Because that sucked for X-wing.
Agreed. Not sure how the releases will work. Runewars has a much more faction-friendly release strategy, so hopefully that ports over.
Is the terrain on that table hand made or are there places you can buy stuff like that?
The table itself was hand made, but there are "token" bushes and trees that you can pick up at some specialized shops online.
How do you make those trees?
They looked like anything you could get from a model train scenery company.
Anyone have an idea of what the ideal game-size will be? For example, say the starter comes with 500 point army but the rule book suggests 1500pt? (or something like that?) I'd like to know how it compares both price and scale/army size against 40k.
800 pts on a 6x3 ft table. at the one hour 30second ish mark he talks about it
Can this be played on a 3x3 table even with larger armies? Would really like to get into this but don't have space for a 6x3 table could probably got a 4x3 as the max size where I live lol.
Could you play on a in-between size table if you wanted too? Such as 4x3, 5x4 etc xxx
That is what we are planning on doing. 6x3 is massive.
Team Covenant fair enough :) I'm in the UK too so our houses aren't as big as American homes either so a 6*3 would literally take more than half the room up when coupled with standing space and space to place cards and dead minis etc lol
You can play on a smaller table, but you need smaller armies
I can't force myself to watch this video.. although i am intrigued by the concept.
I've heard some kinda disappointed that the models are different enough from Imperial Assault ones, that they are not cross compatible, which is unfortunate.
Nice random scenario set up, exactly the same as 40k :)
The fact that even the small vehicles are so tough makes me wonder about the AT-ST. Presumably that will have innate heavy cover or something? Thats gonna be bonkers. You already need a crit to hit the AT-RT then an AT-AT has to be basically invincible. Still, hope they make huge/colossal figures for the game
why are the storm troopers blasters so small?
Thinking of picking this up, great video. Was a little distracted by the dude from Duck Dynasty in the background :)
will there be ewok figures coming out since this looks like endor? if so, when is the expected release date
No idea on future releases. We are expecting it first quarter of 2018!
I thought I read somewhere that tournament were going to be 1000pts and I think you were playing with about 400pts. So, any word on planned releases beyond the starter box?
mrhobbitino 800 points is what I've been hearing
Is there any word on how many point come in the core set for each army?
approx 500 for each team www.polygon.com/2017/8/22/16183878/star-wars-legion-preview-price-release-date-gen-con
To ff guys will you do the seanary too
Waiting to buffer in 720p ;-; EDIT: Fuck it - gonna watch it anyway.
So what's the point of "Issuing orders" if you just pick which unit you want to move... at any time?

After you've issued all your orders, you're back to random draw for the rest of your units until the end of the round.
I want to know if minis from imperial assault are allowed
Officially, no. House rules? Sure!
where did you guys get those trees?
All of the terrain at these tables were provided by Fantasy Flight Games. Where they got or made them, we do not know!
Are the mini's for Legion the same scale as Imperial Assault?
Dwight G unfortunately no. Legion is slightly bigger
No, IA is 28mm, Legion is 32mm. Just different enough to be awkwardly incompatible
The speeder bike guy aiming behind is cool as a static set piece, but it's weird as a game piece. The firing arc doesn't include behind, and it just looks like he's not paying attention to the battle.
VaultBoy he can fire 360 his pistol, which he is aiming backwards with.
I just hope the minis aren't the same as Runewars. I opened that up and sold it immediately.
I'm so psyched for this. But I also wanted to play 5 rings and now my money is going to this. FF taking over GW!
such a great system
0:38 oh yeah so Games Workshops lotr isnt tabletop?
Obsthunter69 what do you with this?
+Léon K. He says this is the first and only big tabletop game of a popular francise or something like that
Obsthunter69 ah ok so that's simply wrong. Lord of the rings/the Hobbit has a bigger franchise and is also much better than this game. And you shouldn't forget a Song of Ice and Fire and Harry Potter (which will be released this fall). There has also been Batman and Marvel/DC before.

+Obsthunter69 *..or that this tabletop Game is bad...
Great content, hard to watch sometimes with the camera guy sticking the dslr in front of the talent, but I do indeed like the overall coverage.
It is disappointing that you can't shoot at engages units. I am pretty sure the Dark Side wouldn't have any qualms about sacrificing a few troopers.
It's star wars bolt action :)
anyone know the scale of the minis? They look a bit bigger than 28mm.
They said they are either 30 or 32, I don't remember. I would assume 32.
FancyLlamas Thank you!
Standard FFG, not enough dice even for the base set.
Pretty certain that was just a shortage across all of the demo tables, not reflective of the quantities in the Core Set.
:(
...and I was wondering what I was going to do with the kids play table. Now I have the solution - add sand and you get an instant Tatooine play table for Star Wars Legion.
This was a really nice play though. Many of the mechanics are very family to other FFG games. There seems to be an appropriate level of genre fluff. Do we paint and build or just paint
Build and paint.
Props to the guy in background.
Is it just me or are there some elements from Dust Warfare?
Luke on Endor with a blue lightsaber?
I like the movement system. At first I thought the graphics on the cards were to small and difficult to decipher without a manual but as with all games FFG or WotC for that matter the design & art is top notch and in some cases elegant. Im gonna buy this...
To make an amazing diorama 😂
Zack looks really tired. The Con Fatigue is real.
This needs to be played on mats. The rulers on raised terrain looks like a headache.
First impressions are it seems more like a star wars sales train than a good game mechanically. A lot of cards on the table at once. Movement seems maybe too easy because of how freeform it is
its like xcom only with star wars maby good when its come on pc ;D
you forgot to add suppression on that first unit that took a hit
Never tell me the odds - the joke was right there, but no one ran with it! :D
Well, they do have a record of delivering quality content gaming - with only a few missteps (e.g. competitive SW LCG & X-Wing). )
TC has a business partnership with FFG. These videos are ads.
More to come from GenCon, including Eric Lang on CMON, Colby Dauch with Plaid Hat's new releases, and an amazing little game called Element by Rather Dashing.
We do tend to enjoy FFG's approach, but other publishers do often get our attention. Check out:

I want to play scum... now
and a rancor, and a bantha as well
Not a fan of the old GW style slotta bases. The warmachine ones with the rounded lip are a lot better.
That is good to know, what did you think of the peg style bases GW used for some models?
