You can tel the era this was recorded, but even though dated, it definitely holds up as a vibe. Perfect representation of their earlier music.

1996 I won tickets to their concert in Mobile, AL-the metal head I was then or more before mostly despised The Cure and all those keyboard, goth, techno type 80’s music. They Effin blew me away how good the sounded on the only 3 songs I really knew,😂and then for not knowing much material it was phenomenal how good they were. Got to see them in May 2023 was equally amazing and perfect performance. AND it was the opening night of the tour in NOLA.🤘🖖✌️🎸🎤🎹🥁

Justin, you want to hear a killer bass line from The Cure? The song called "Fascination Street." The bass is killer dope sick and just slams. Imagine Chris Squire on too much coffee..lol. Listen to the extended version. I think it's better than the studio cut.

You've got to remember that this music played at clubs, all ages clubs and 21 and over clubs. Gen X kids went out clubbing and to live shows. Literally, we were out dancing at 12 or 13. We also spun records or listened to tapes in our bedrooms. The long intro was there, so you could catch the vibe and start dancing. The Forest gives you late night, red riding hood and the wolf vibes. Awesome song. And, if you want to hear some Siouxsie and the Banshees, let's start with Halloween: th-cam.com/video/hIHUzBFlcW8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=79yn3NZkhyl7rzGC

I love this and the album seventeen seconds. I had just left school at 16 to go to college 1980. It was my first proper use of controlled delay on guitar. I had to learn this great song, we all loved them In the 80s a great British band 👌 🤘👍

Trent Reznor gave a great induction speech when the Cure went into the Rock Hall. Another song from this album I think you’d dig is Play for Today. It’s faster and more complex. Both songs are routinely included in their sets nowadays 44 years later.

In my opinion, Seventeen Seconds is their best album (followed by Faith in 81). I love The Cure in their early days because musically and vocally it's deliberately restrained, as much in Smith's self-effacing vocals as in the synths, which are present but not intrusive, because they're there to embellish, to give the final touch, but they're not overpowering as would be the case on their albums of the mid-to-late 80s.
As for Siouxsie & the Banshees (in which Robert Smith played in 1979 and again from ‘82 to '84), I highly recommend listening to their album Tinderbox (recorded in 1985 and released in 1986), from which two tracks were taken as singles: ”Candyman" (which opens the album) and "Cities in Dust" (which closes the first side) and for which two videos were made.

They play this live regularly, and it usually is a drawn-out jam with a long intro and outro.

The bassist, Simon Gallup, usually is a pick player. This video clip and the one to 'Lovesong' are the only occasions I've ever seen him play fingerstyle.
Strangely, in another clip that was filmed on the same day (just with the lights on), 'Play For Today', he does play with a pick! 😄
He's not the most technical player but has come up with some great, melodic bass parts over the years and had been a big influence on me when I'd started to learn the bass 😊
He's The Cure's 2nd bassist and had joined before their second album, which 'A Forest' is from. He'd left the band for a while in the mid 80's but today is the only other member from those old days 🙂

What timing. I was also just recently checking out The Cure for the first time based on a Tim Bowness/Steven Wilson podcast. Agreed, this has that 'early blush of creativity but meh production' quality to it. The song and the whole vibe has an undeniable charisma that reminds me of Siouxsie & the Banshees, a band I recently got into via 'Stranger Things'. But nobody I went to school with was into this stuff back when it was new, so the first time I really heard it was via alt radio in the 90s. I've never been a huge fan of the genre, although some years ago I did sort of find my way into it via Dead Can Dance, whose early albums are in the same vein.

Albums ,Faith, Seventeen Seconds and especially Pornography are on the dark side , Head on the Door leans more pop. Most Cure fans consider 1989’s Disintegration their Masterpiece
Now check out their new single , and first new music in 16 years , “Alone”. New album coming November 1.

I was into heavier stuff back then so never listened but had a friend who was addicted to them. I think people who liked them beyond their hits were equally persecuted against like the metal kids. lol. And now having listened to these guys later in life and seeing them get inducted into the rock HOF (on TV), I get that this is who Robert Smith really is. Had I watched this back when it came out, I would have thought it was an act. But he really is like this I guess.
