  • Short demo and overview of a hybrid eurorack drum machine featuring 808, 909 and samples. We use the Tip Top Audio Circadian Rhythms as the sequencer and the MixZ as the drum bus mixer. I then add the rest of the modular in the second half of the videos.

    That was sweet. Sounds like music that can only come from a setup like this. Not something I could think of in my head and try to make in my DAW. This is what attracts me to modular synths. I haven't taken the dive into this world yet. I'm wondering how much time and money has to go into learning and experimenting before I'd be able to generate usable musical ideas. I'd imagine it's easy to get sucked in, look at the clock and realize 5 hours have gone by. I also imagine the gear lust is intense. Definitely on another level for me since it's an entirely separate universe. It's very intriguing. I've been considering whether or not I want to get into it for years. I feel like modular synths are like the ring. Only Frodo can handle the precious. I'm not sure yet if I'm Frodo. I need the guidance of Gandalf. I'm sure once he takes a puff of his pipe and blows out an intricate ship made of smoke, the answer will become clear. I was beginning to think I was Sam, but maybe I was really Frodo all along.

      man you have no idea how bad it can get. If you do not have the money to get into it, I would advise against it. It is everything you have described x1000000. I find it nearly impossible to pull myself away from my own setup on a very frequent basis.

    i love euro drum machines, but I hear a noise problem in this setup. idk if it's because the intelligel TPS30 PSU isn't 'low noise' enough or if it's because the modules don't have enough distance from the power supply in that case. does anyone else hear that high frequency tone that comes in the second you patch up the sequencer? I used to have the same noise problems when using the Pittsburgh Modular System 90 case, but everything resolved itself after upgrading to a deeper (5 and 3/4" Synthrotek case w Case Power blue). I do like the demonstration though. cheers!

    Modular drums are EXPENSIVE

    • @Lalaland.001
      @Lalaland.001 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      compared to what? vst, software, daw. it only relative to what you are used to. An mpc wil set you back anywhere from $800-2000+, a drumbrute which will cost you $300, a original RD 808 which will set you back at least $4000 and original 909 which will cost anywhere from $2600-$3500 depending on condition. This rig wil cost new about $1100-$1500 secondhand probably about half of that. SO prices are really relative to what you want to do with it. The reason eurorack is slightly pricier is because of the interconnections between all modules and brands. You can literally do anything within a eurorack system whereas a standalone drummachine will only go within the limits of its capabilities.
      Not saying one is better then the other but there is a good reason for the price difference...And don't forget, you don't buy a modular rig in a day, most systems get compiled over years of trail and error and knowing what you want to do with your system, so it's kind of a misconception that modular is only a rich kid of well off person's thing. I saved up for my kit for over 10 years now and I have a pretty decent system that does what I want it to do...Just my two cents, have fun and have a magnificent day...

    • @soundlabsounddesign9392
      @soundlabsounddesign9392 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lalaland.001 This kit is amazing and once upon a synth makes it sound great, but (as a personal preference) I would rather spend $300 for a Behringer RD-8. If I were to spend $1500 for analog/hybrid drums, I would look for a DSI Tempest. But in reality I use an MPC1000 with JJOS, a hybrid Pearl SC-40 and a Kawai XD-5, I spent less than $450 for those three combined. I have gear from (and since) when rack format was THE option and groove box format was hitting the market. I really like the Eurorack format and its endless possibilities, but I would need to get rid of fantastic pieces of standalone (heavy and huge) professional grade gear to get new stuff. So I decided that I'm fine working within the limitations of 8-12-16 bits, midi controlled analog filters, and lexicon reverbs, since I found by exploring the possibilities within each piece of gear that to master each, can take years, not to mention the combination of them through a patch bay and a mixer. But to each its own, there's gear and music for everyone to create with, and that my friend it is a beautiful thing.

      @David Harmon please get a life, here multiple sold listing on ebay for less then $3500 www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=909+roland&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1
      Now please kindly show yourself to the proverbial door. I bought mine last year for less the 2200EU now what...Even mint with OG box only fetch about $5000. Get your facts straight...

    • @Lalaland.001
      @Lalaland.001 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @David Harmon Yep, mine is definitely a fake one then. I bought it of eBay from japan and had it serviced it by a Roland specialist here in Holland. He was jealous that I got mine at that price. It was in great condition I paid 2200EU for it. If you buy it on eBay, you can ask for pictures if you pay that much money for it even of the insides, just to make sure and for redundancy ask for a serial number then verify the serial with Roland. It's that easy to verify if it's real, no expert needed. I have had three f these machines as they wear out, all bought of eBay, through the years, as these puppies will break down and none were fake. The first one I bought about 20 years ago and paid $400 for it. You are absolutely out of your mind. NO less the $7000. The ones that were sold and I linked you to, are legit pieces as well, never even heard of someone buying or selling a fake one. As they don't exist...
      Get out of here...Reverb is bullsh*t anyways as they are asked stupid prices. No wonder you think they cost $7000.
      Mind you even on reverb those are asking prices not the actual price you are going to pay for it. A lot of my friends buy of reverb and always talk there prices down, simply contact the seller make and offer and wait for it. There is a make offer button on the site for a reason, nitwit.
      And just for sh*ts and giggles here are the listing on reverb reverb.com/p/roland-tr-909
      And even there they are not even close to $7000
      Who's crazy now, the most expensive one come with a full service and warranty, and comes in at 5,345EU which is $6350 which considering the fact that it comes fully serviced, recapped and is in excellent condition and a year of warranty slightly more then what I would be willing to pay for it...But servicing that kind of machine can get really expensive, so considering that...It's slightly overpriced.
      Also maybe you never checked under the listings on reverb there is a graph of the price history and even that one will tell you that the price of the Roland 909 has been steadily between the 3000-3500EU range. You can see prices going back to 2017.
      Also here is the page with the latest sold listings on reverb reverb.com/marketplace?query=roland%20909&show_only_sold=true
      Guess what on your beloved site the last "real" roland 909 was sold at 3900EU which is at the current exchange rate $4626,38 Which again not only proves my point that those are asking prices and not prices at which they are sold at. Every single sold unit on that sold page went for less the $4800...So I'm really sorry buddy you are full of sh*t...
      On the left side there are actual boxes you can tick, you need to tick the sold listing one...just in case you never knew that feature existed. You are on the internet here buddy...
      Next time check the sold listings page on your reverb website before you make yourself look like an absolute *ss...
      Have good one...

      @David Harmon Sorry buddy, mine is all original, go back to the page of sold listings on reverb, I linked you to it. You are high on crack, you in your own comment said $7000 and now suddenly it's only $4000. Hmmm, price drop much? Here is a link to your own first comment.

      @Lalaland you're not touching a 909 for less than $7,000.
      To go from $7000 to now suddenly $4000 is a price drop of almost 50%. Keep dreaming...nitwit. Also weren't you the one who just said"
      David Harmon
      2 hours ago
      @Lalaland Nope, you're crazy. Reverb makes sure it's real. Never a clone.
      You are truly good at contradicting yourself aren't you. Mine is a complete original, I would send you pictures of the inside of it if TH-cam allowed me to do so, just to show you how real my last one. Here is a video of my tech guy doing the maintenance on it. th-cam.com/video/kHxp0UHyXpE/w-d-xo.html The one he shows here was mine, which is now broken beyond repair. He also serviced my most recent one, the one I bought last year. Tell me if it's a clone, he does a real indepth look close ups at around the 6 minute mark and top notch maintenance on it, the customer he is referring to in the video was me. The one I have now has the same layout and circuit board...I know my machines, my man and so does my techie. He does take on commissions. He services most of my vintage gear...The man is located in the UK which only cost me about GBP35 for shipping the unit with insurance on top of that a decent fee for parts, repair and maintenance of course....Also you can check out my photostream on flickr here www.flickr.com/people/xybo/ on page 13 and 14 you can have a close look not only at my 909 but the rest of my studio...all vintage originals...I probably don't make your kind of music, but I can assure you my sh*t's real...I have been dong this sh*t for quite some time now buddy...
      Feel free to drop by at KHK studio in Amsterdam, My studio is located on the marnixkade there...So you can come and see for yourself...
      Have good one...

    RIP headphone users at 3:32 😵😳
    I almost always used in-ear Bluetooth headphones, but today just happened to be using Bluetooth in my car's stereo; thank goodness for that. Man....
    There are so many fantastic synth channels on TH-cam, but why does it seem like 0.01% actually 'normalize' their audio when they render their Videos? Look Mum No Computer for instance... In the majority of his videos the talking is fairly quiet, _then when he starts playing music_ *BAM!!!!* it's 8db louder and ruptures my damn ear drums... Blood from the ears no es bueno! 😂
    Anyway, I know I got off topic - great video! 👍

    im really into this but im relatively new to eurorack. how are you syncing the modules together that dont have patch cables? you said the master clock is feeding through the tempo, but i want to know how its hooked up, is it through the pin cables underneath?

    • @jludeker9658
      @jludeker9658 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sequencer runs off of its own master clock. The sequencer is sending triggers to the different modules in time with that clock. The modules don't have to be connected to each other, just the same sequencer.

    nub question here . but how did you route all your drum sound on a bus ??? was this done on the rail with the mixer ?? and also if you where to take the signal from one of the drum module and patch it elsewhere would it be cut from the mix bus ? cheers .

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it's all sent through the power rail. Each module has a jumper on the back where you can choose if you want to send via the mix bus. Hm I'm not sure if the mix bus mix is removed if you patch something in the front, that's a good question. I haven't tried that, maybe someone else can chime in here, because I no longer have this configuration setup.

    • @MusicGearNuts
      @MusicGearNuts 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can use supporting modules to reduce the range where necessary... it's modular after all.

    • @japanmania
      @japanmania 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, really my question should be if tweak the knobs with 5 volts is more comfortable than with 10 volts, and if that second range is not comfortable to change the notes in little intervals. Any advice of once upon a synth about this?

    • @degoyen
      @degoyen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't know what you're really asking. But Probably the 5V version has better resolution than the 10V. That's 5 octaves, if you need more range you can offset the frequency of you VCO or scale it with another Offset, like Ch 2-3 of Maths.

    • @japanmania
      @japanmania 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DeGoyen I mean that, if the resolution with 10 volts it's not comfortable compared to 5 volts. Because couldn't try it I'm asking

    • @degoyen
      @degoyen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well think that you will have half the resolution. If you're working with pitch and neet to be in tune, then probably you'll need a quantizer anyway.

  • @raytheonorion

    I might have missed it, but I did not see any of the drum modules patched out to that mixer. Are they internally patched or something? Or was I not paying attention?

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I mention it in the beginning. Basically these tip top audio modules have a "mix bus" feature where the audio is sent via the power cables, which is pretty neat.

    • @philtobin9510
      @philtobin9510 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mixbus is very useful and not restricted to the TT drum modules. The Deopfer CV/GATE outputs/inputs use the same bus leads or bus boards. Can get confusing when you have loads of modules that use the CV/GATE bus.

    • @HazeAnderson

      True and complex polyrhythms like 5 or 7 over 4 require 2 sequencers working at different tempos.

    • @575garden
      @575garden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You don't necessarily need two separate pieces of hardware. Is THIS sequencer able to do polyrhythms?

    • @HazeAnderson
      @HazeAnderson 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So show me with one piece of hardware then. The polyrhythm has to be 5 over 4 or 7 over 4. None of this 2 over 3 or 3 over 4 easy stuff. :)

    • @575garden
      @575garden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      haha bloody hell mate, this could go on all night!. Is THIS sequencer able to perform any polyrhythms of any kind?, regardless of wether or not they are complex, or wether or not you like them?? ;-)

    • @oiartsun
      @oiartsun 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm rather late to this question, but the answer is no. I mean, you could do 2:3 and 3:4 polyrhythms, but I imagine you're asking about the more complex polyrhythms and even polymeter. According to some digging I did in Muffwiggler, when asked about this, Tiptop recommends that if you care about polyrhythm and polymeter, get a Trigger Riot instead.

      circadian rhythms and the modules shown here plus a case and power supply will be about $2000 USD lmfao what a rip off. Then you gotta buy patch cables. I bought a volca sample for $169 and can do everything this thing can do

      @Robert Syrett First things first: the initial comment is rude. He is definitely a intelligent guy. About the disting...Sure sure. But the wave folding sounds like digital garbage in comparison to serious modules, the tuning mode never worked for me, the scaling is fiddly, the delay is very vanilla and so are 30 other modes as you always need a manual. The sample play mode is ok but I really love the sound of the modular things radiomusic which can be configured as a beautifully intuitive oneshot player with CV access to up to 16 different samples in one bank ... for me the very secret favorite. But I am not even saying your wrong, it is just a matter of perspective.

    Whats with these black wedding rings that seem to be all the hype these days? The amount of these soyboy/bearded numales i've seen with these same black or dark metal wedding bands is insane..
    I'm loving the drum machine though, Very cool

    percussion modules are a waste of money! i haven't heard a single sound in this video that couldn't have been made with a cheap groovebox.

      The argument of cost effectiveness hasn't really ever applied to euro rack, or hardware synths really. You could have made all these sounds with a $5 (or free even) ipad app.

      sure, but i'm convinced that modular synthesizers are capable of producing complex sounds which you wouldn't be able to recreate in any daw if you buy the right modules and get creative.
      so if i'd build an 80hp eurorack drummachine i would use up all the space for just one really complex drumvoice consisting of one oscillator and lots of modulation sources. eurorack synths should be a tool for sounddesign, not for arrangement.

      The modules in this video were designed to emulate 808 and 909 sounds, which they do quite well. Other percussion modules like those from SSF, Noise Engineering, or ALM have much broader synthesis abilities and CV functionality than what you can get from a drum machine.

    This doesn’t seem cost effective at all. Just get a stand-alone drum machine if it’s going to be this vanilla.
