Landing Mistake in Strong Wind

  • Back in 2021, I still had very few hours of flight in my logbook.
In February 2021 I was flying my old paraglide (Accura 2.1) in Urlati, a place close to home where you would usually go for soaring the slope. The wind intensified and I tried to do a top landing. What happened is that I was pushing the speed bar to the limit, descending vertically all the way until I almost touched the ground. At this moment I released the bar and pulled the brakes!! Well, at that time I didn't know what would happen. But of course, keep the speed bar and "kill" the wing by pulling hard on the C risers (D-s in the case of the Accura) as soon as you touch the ground and you're good. I know some people "kill" it by pulling the A-risers, but then you need to turn and run after it, as an EN-B wing can re-inflate fast after a frontal collapse.
Next landing in strong wind was a month later, same harness and same glide, this time I did everything correctly, and it went much better! Check it out: • Landing Better in Stro...
    00:00 - I started the camera a few minutes after the take-off
05:06 - Already looking for the speed-bar. On that Sky reversible harness, the speed-bar would remain somewhere behind the seat and it was difficult to find it, most of the time I had to use one hand to bring the speed-bar under my feet. Since 2022 I am flying a pod harness and it is much easier to find the speed-bar
06:45 - Looking for the speed bar again
07:15 - without the speed, I am simply hovering. This is already a question mark
09:55 - already going too much back, now it is impossible to go forward
10:20 - descending vertically. Now pushing the speed-bar to the max doesn't help. I should have done that a few minutes before and try to stay in front of the hill.
10:40 - the landing. Skip straight here if you want to have fun

Very useful video. A reminder for those still learning of what can happen in strong wind. Cheers.

Thank you for your comment! Luckily, I had people to teach me how to do it and also the willingness to listen. Still in 2021, just one month later I had another landing in strong wind, with the same equipment. This time it went much better. I will post the video in a few days and link to it!

This is not a landing mistake, but a flying mistake. 😅

Robert, I have to agree...partially. As I explained in the description, I should not have arrived in the position to not be able to push forward. So, yes this WAS also a flying mistake. But since I was there, landing was a disaster! Luckily the lesson learned was very cheap, no damage to the equipment or the stuntman! Soon I will post the next landing in strong wind; if I remember correctly you have seen that one live, 3 years ago!
