Jarogo Waterfall also known as Jarogo Banda Waterfall is a waterfall located in Matta Tehsil in Swat District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the Province of Pakistan. It is also known as the highest waterfall of Pakistan. It is about 30 kilometres from Matta Tehsil and 53 kilometres from Mingora.
The word Jarogo means broom in Pashto but its history goes back to the ancient times of the Hindu Shahi period in Swat. There was a Hindu woman named Jarogai, who was widely known and esteemed in the surrounding areas, so the people named it after her.
Swat Valley has a rough and bloody history. From being occupied by the Taliban to local unrest, it is only recently that local tourists have felt comfortable enough to revisit the region. With Pakistanis just now warming up to the idea of traveling to Swat Valley, you can forget about seeing many international tourists.
Due to the lack of exposure, many of the most breathtaking places in Swat Valley are hidden well off the beaten path. While this may tickle the fancy of adventurous backpackers, these places are so unknown that even locals in Mingora (the largest city in Swat) have no clue on what would be the first step to get there.
The Jarogo Waterfall is known as the highest waterfall in all of Pakistan. Even with it holding this record, people in Mingora will scratch their heads when you mention its name. Despite being a mere 50km away from Mingora, you can expect the trip to the falls to take at least half a day (not including the time to get back).
In order to get to the Jarogo Waterfall, you will first have to head to the Nekpi Khel Bus Station and take a plain coach (another word for a van) to a town called Matta. The price of the plain coach should be 150 PRK (1 USD). It will take a total of two transfers, in both Matta and Beha, before you finally reach the entrance to the Jarogo Waterfall.
The Jarogo Waterfalls are a famous destination for domestic visitors from across the Swat and surrounding areas. Cooking, camping, singing and bathing are common activities performed by the local visitors. The interest of domestic and outside visitors is always a good sign for tourism and local economy but it must also be carried out with responsibility. While having fun right under the waterfalls, please be environment and tourism friendly. Do not cut the wood for fire and carry back the wastes with you to leave this natural wonder clean.
Jarogo Waterfalls definitely deserve to be in the list of top 5 waterfalls in Pakistan. For nature lovers and moderate adventure lovers this is an ideal trek. For experienced and extreme trekkers, this trek may lead to several other long treks as well. Other trekking possibilities are Jahaz Banda in Upper Dir, Gabin Jabba and Bahrain in Swat and Kandol Lake in Utror valley. For these multi-day treks, a local guide is recommended along with complete gear and preparations.
