I had a similar experience at AEON, but it's really school by school. We got assigned a new manager who wanted non-stop classes, lobby talk, interviews, and selling campaign materials. I still get hits for my "Truth About AEON" blogs.
+Turner Wright haha. Yah.when i was an ET i was surprised how each school is so different based on how the manager treats the staff and job. Thanks for watching. Link your blog so i can read it.
This is the most informative post about working for one of these I've seen. I've been meaning to finally just try a year in Japan teaching but so many horror stories and knowing little Japanese keeps me from doing it. Thanks for your story!
A friend of mine lived in Tokyo working for some video game company and would make extra side cash teaching English at Starbucks or McDonald’s. He said that earned him some extra money and helped with his Japanese.
I work at aeon now and my god is it terrible. I know every school is different but mine has me working 65-70 hours a week. The office is super unorganized. My workspace is the only place that is organized so the other teachers just throw their stuff on and mess it up. I complained about it but they said its about team work so deal with it. Manager is super strict. In addition to those unpaid overtime hours they sometimes give me work to do at home and call it "homework" Its such a terrible experience that i am bailing from the company for a new position.
wow! That is completely opposite to the situation I had. But as you said each school is different. And actually I heard about a school that was really bad like yours and I had to Emergency Teach there for a month but when I got there the teacher as well as the manager had both left so it was actually quite calm and easy. That sucks about your situation. Hopefully you can find another job/company.
I gotta say, I'm kinda jealous - this is RADICALLY different from my experience in Nagoya (Narumi) back in 2003. I had no additional resources, nothing left over from the previous teacher, no support from Honbu, and no help from the other teachers at my school. The school manager even told me to do the exact opposite of what the Honbu training told me to do.
I have an interview with Aeon and your video scared me a little from the title! I thought I was in for a shock 😂 But thank you, it sounds like Aeon is a great place to start a life in Japan. I just have to be wary of complacency!
No, not at all because there is nothing to sell. You work for the Board of Education in public schools so its free Education paid by the government. Parents don't have to pay for their kids to go to school and you don't sell any type of program or product.
Hi mate, great channel. In general which companies in Japan provide accommodation as a benefit? I know in china and korea they include it with the contract.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yah, the thing with Japan is most companies don`t provide accommodation. They help you find it and sometimes they might give you company housing for a cheap rate, but not free accommodation. In my experience, only the Jet Programme has some positions that are way out in the country side and sometimes come with a free apartment or car. But you can't ask for a location so it's just the luck of the draw. When I worked for JET they gave me an apartment owned by city hall that was about $150/month so really cheap. But not free.
@@ozzy78 Thats cool, thanks. I dont mind paying aslong as I still get to save a little. Hmm Jet does not sound too bad compared to aeon. Thanks either way ive always been a huge anime and ramen fan and wanted to check out Japan 👍
Actually, as far as saving money as concerned, Japan would be the worst, I would rank those 3 (China, Japan and Korea) in terms of saving money as 1. China 2. Korea 3. Japan. Cost of living can range from slightly higher in Japan to exorbitantly higher depending on the are compared to the other two countries.
Just curious that's all. When you were you working for Aeon did they pay social insurance? That is the scheme where the employer has to pay half of your medical insurance and half of your pension. A lot of these eikaiwas have historically avoided enrolling their employees into this scheme to cut costs.
I am pretty sure I didn't pay it. For both Aeon and for the kindergarten company I worked for afterwards. Loopholes to screw the government for sure. 😆
@@ozzy78 No surprises! LOL A lot of eikaiwa and ALT companies haven't been enrolling their employees in it for a long time. Afterall they have to pay 50 percent of the cost if they do. The labour laws have changed now and it seems they have to now. If you have more than 500 employees and they are working at least 20 hours per week they must be enrolled in it. I suspect it was an economic decision by the government as so many employees were not enrolled in it. The pension fund looks uncertain 30 years from now due to the increasing elderly population and decreasing workforce.
I worked for the best private University in Mexico in a non-teaching position, they made a general meeting twice a year with only one thing in tehe agenda: getting more clients, I mean, students. Nothing in private education is done for the sake of education, not even for the sake of students, they just don't care as long as they get new full-paying students. I'd start withAeon if I were native speaker, but my options are Gaba (last resource) or Berlitz as an entrance to Japan, then I might move to ALT. But that'll be after I get my TEFL.
HI ozzy, what is the policy at Aeon for freelancing? I know the contract states that you can't have another job but does it count if it's your online business?
I am not 100% sure about contract related stuff. Especially since it has probably changed since the time i was working there. But as long as you are doing private lessons or jobs that do not require filing taxes I think you are fine. Just don't tell them. Lol. But i am not a lawyer so I wouldnt trust me. 😂😂
what about vacation? i know that at eikaiwa you dont get that much time off unlike when working in a school and get summer and winter vacation off. what are your opinions on working in a school vs eikaiwa?
Yah. You are right. With ALT jobs your holidays are much longer. With Aeon i got shorter holidays during golden week, obon and new years holidays. Pretty much only the official holidays off. But they also give an extra week of days you can request off. Its good because you can use it during off season to travel for cheap. But its short. Holiday wise, ALT is way better in my opinion.
My advice to gaijin looking for long term work teaching in Japan is one of 3 things. 1. open a your own eikaiwa. 2. Teach at a private high school if qualified or 3. get a master degree eventually PhD and teach at a university. ALT and eikaiwa are good starters but they are monotonous and get very stale after a while.
Good video! If you are serious about learning Japanese don't work for an eikaiwa. Many spend 1 or 2 years and through no fault of their own end up with hardly any skills in the Japanese language. ALT is a better choice. Outside of class you can talk in Japanese with teachers and students. The best way is of course working for a Japanese company.
It depends on the region and things have changed a lot since when I was there. My rent was 39,000 at the time. But I am sure it's probably double that now.

Hey Ozzy. How was the emergency teacher position like? Did you still live in the same place? Also, how was the day to day routine? Were there ever times where no schools needed an extra teacher so you just got like an extra day off?
The ET position was pretty good. i actually had to move to a special building near the Nagoya Aeon head office. It was actually better cos it was right next to a popular station and I had other Aeon teachers and staff in my building. I was usually based at the head office and I would help out with office stuff or whatever if I wasn't called out to a school. But in my case I had a lot of month long stints so I usually was at a school. It was a good position at the time but traveling, sometimes having to stay at a different apartment or business hotel, not knowing what to expect at the school are all things to consider. I was lucky and had no problems.
my only criticism of your video is that you said yourself 'i didn't have any teaching experience' - could other opportunities within aeon have appeared, later, that might have satisfied your desire to 'genuinely' teach?
I think had I stayed a few more years and gained more experience I might have been able to get a trainer or supervisor type position. But i feel like my ALT job I have now is the closest to independent teaching without spending my entire day and night planning lessons, grading, etc. At elementary school even though I am an Assistant Language Teacher, realistically the Japanese homeroom teachers dont speak a word of English so I am the main teacher. I can design the lessons, activities and flow the way I like it. Lots of freedom but still done by 4pm and out the school so my private life doesn't suffer.

I know what you mean. My original video didnt have the blurs. But Aeon threatened to take down my video if i didnt do that. So it was either blur the pic or remove the vid. What would you do?
Hi, thanks for watching! Not sure what you mean about leaving out the first frame. Basically when i uploaded this video there was no blurs. However, I was contacted by the company and they were willing to let me leave my video up as long as I blurred out any pictures of teachers/students/classrooms of the Aeon I worked at. I think the picture you might be refering to is the front of an Aeon school. That is not my school. that is just a generic Aeon school front and not my actual school. Hopefully that answers your question. I still think the video was way better without the blurs but if Ididn't compromise they would try to take down my video and I rather share my story then lose it just for some pictures. Take care.
thanks for the reply man! Nah, its just a small matter, I still could see a split second view of the photos anyway, one question to you if you don't mind answering, In your experience, how frequently do you have English teaching colleagues that are from countries like say, from South East Asia? and are there any differences in treatment from the company that comes due to not hailing from an English speaking country? I'm a Chinese Malaysian and as you've pointed out in the video, Eikaiwa works more like a business and, correct me if i'm wrong, it would seem like it make sense if they would put their more caucasian looking teachers out even more so than people who ethnically look like them. I guess inevitably they would but does this significantly affect people who are not?
I am wondering about your work status in Japan? I hear some people have to leave after a year. Does being formerly married to a Japanese help your visa status?
+ko ko it depends on your working visa length. Mine was 3 years. Some people get only 1. And if u get married u can get a spouse visa so you are good. I never got a spouse visa because i was ok with a work one.
I like you and your videos. im moving to Japan with Amity in August and this was helpful cz Amity and aeon I hear are sister schools and quite similar. thank you
I worked at Amity for 7 years. It’s a nicer place than AEON but it depends on the school manager. I taught at 16 schools for them. It’s a school - but it’s a business too. Your part of a team and if the last foreign teacher was selfish, it can cause problems with the next. In the end, it can be a lot of fun or a real nightmare depending on if you came to work and live or just explore with a “job” - doing this for more than two years is insane but it’s not a bad life :) good luck! I got to see a lot of kids grow.

Running my ass off and even though I hate it, the results were good. Not too late for you or me to get back to form.
My comment on Nove English, after perfunctory incomplete research. The founder of Nova, connected to at least one cofounder of Aeon English, was convicted of fraud and embezzlement, consequently serving 3 years in prison. He was also kidnapped in Nihonbashi, Japan, for not paying his Yakuza fees. Nova closed temporarily in 2007, failing to pay its teachers. It reopened due to a loan. Last week, it made the news again for forcing teachers to risk Coronavirus Covid 19 infections by working in unsanitary conditions and also penalizing teachers by deducting from salaries, for students who canceled classes. Nova English is a company for the inexperienced, unqualified, a rogue rag tag of misfits desperately seeking some modicum of respectability under the false title of English teacher😂😂 Its staff are those possessing sufficent integrity to persist in accumulating a monthly adolescent's allowance from Nova, while simultaneously sacrificing their own integrity in oiling a machinery, which benefits criminals in suits who devalue education and human rights 👍
Just a fair heads up buddy....Ive heard of youtubers getting in serious trouble with their former employers for talking about them, be it good or bad....so you've got some kahunas talking about this (huge thumbs up!) but damn...be careful, my dude. But an excellent story.
serious trouble? how? if you are no longer an employee with any ties, than there is really nothing they can do unless you say something untrue which could be considered defamation.
DogaTv there was a case a few years back that Unrested talked about. A guy in Shizuoka was sued by his former employer for defamation even though the information the guy provided was factually correct. I've read of other eikaiwa companies sending cease and desist letters to bloggers, vloggers, and youtubers for posts they made discussing their work life at those companies. Ozzys vid is the first video I've seen a jvlogger make in quite some time that directly names the employer or former employer. Honestly I'd ask Victor and/or Unrested directly about this issue because they know much more about the legality than I do but I know that companies have reacted to stuff like this.
+Phoenyx 787 i have wanted to make this video for awhile. Since i actually enjoyed the job and the company i thought it would be informative and a more personal look into the world of eikaiwa. I dont think my video was saying anything negative about the company except that i didnt fit the business part of it since i am not a salesman. Also i worked at this company more than a decade ago so everyone i worked with either left the company, retired or died. If they really care what some guy who worked for them 12 years ago with less than 20k subscribers says than i will be happy to take down the video. Which would suck because i pretty much said eikaiwa isnt shit and compared to other companies they are doing much better. Either way i put it out and if they dont like it i will deal with it at the time. Hopefully it doesnt come to that though.
Aeon sounds kind of boring if you don't get to make up your own lessons. I will get my bachelor's in English Literature in a year, but might find other options..
I don't know if you already did this video or would even feel comfortable doing it, but would love to hear the story of how you meet your ex wife and life as an inter-racial couple.
At about 3:40 you mention GEOS is not doing so well , but AEON is doing well. GEOS was created by one of the co-founders of AEON. They are like cousins. Amity is also a creation by AEON. It also has a horrible reputation. It seems GEOS and Amity tend to be crap while AEON tries to focus on keeping its own name pristine clean though AEON has a large influence in just how crappy Amity and GEOs are. However, since your employment until now, AEON has fallen downhill in a major way. It has become financially close to bankruptcy on few occasions according to legal paperwork submitted to courts. It also hires unqualified and inexperienced teachers at low pay while simultaneously charging high prices to students. It is called the McDonalds of English in Japan without the good taste of course. AEON is part of the reason in my opinion why English language quality in Japan is horrendous according to English language test scores and horrible performance by Japanese academic scholars and business professionals at international conferences. Let's hope there comes better for Japan quickly. Thanks for this video.
My TOEIC score of 965 is higher than every English teachers of my school. They assume I don’t speak or not good at it, big wrong. Can I teach English? I know they prefer white teachers..

I completely agree with this comment! Actually ALL asian countries seem to be obsessed with whiteness. Japanese,Korean, Indian, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. They all think having blonde hair and wearing blue contact lessons makes them look like Eminem or Taylor Swift. I was walking through Harajuku and I was shocked that almost 90% of the fashionable people there had colored their hair and dressed like they were from Beverly Hills. I don't know why being white seems so important to Asians. People from all Asian countries amuse me.

Take care.
thanks for the reply man! Nah, its just a small matter, I still could see a split second view of the photos
anyway, one question to you if you don't mind answering,
In your experience, how frequently do you have English teaching colleagues that are from countries like say, from South East Asia? and are there any differences in treatment from the company that comes due to not hailing from an English speaking country?
Good thing living in the countryside of Japan forces you to learn the language. Also, no foreigners to talk English too as well.
Hello OzzyAwesome, any tips you can give regarding the interview process?
Let me think about it and get back to you! Maybe in video form.
I like you and your videos. im moving to Japan with Amity in August and this was helpful cz Amity and aeon I hear are sister schools and quite similar. thank you
Nice. Yah, I had a lot of Amity friends and they enjoyed their job!
@@onlyinjapanGO pls post the Amity link for me... Tnx
I want to know what your parents said after you said... by the way, I'm moving to JAPAN!!!
+Kaygee79 stay tuned
@@ozzy78 lmao! 😆 So I'm obviously VERY new on this/your scene & I am also quite interested in the answer to this question...
Btw, I noticed I've apparently binged watch @ at least 10 of your vids. So obviously I personally enjoy watching & as well as find them quite interesting. So for all->I'd like to say "Thank You!" (Yeah "my other 1/2" & I have @ 19 yrs. of history Plus a beautiful 9 year old daughter.) Frankly, how I even stumbled across a video of yours was because I just so happened to be looking at vids about Okinawa Japan. Which happens to be where his mother as well as himself are not only from but born. So Your 2 Part Was Really F'ckin Cool!!! 🤘👍☺🍶🍚🥢
I lived in Japan and would like to go back to visit but not as an ELT. Great vid for those that are interested in this though.
And WOW, you had hair! Thumbs up. You looked like a pretty fit dude in younger pics. Your metabolism has slowed down buddy. Mine did too and I did something about it. Running my ass off and even though I hate it, the results were good. Not too late for you or me to get back to form.
+HaiDesu yah, english in Japan is not for everyone and can get tedious depending on the company. Glad u know you still love Japan!
Gotta say, you looked pretty damn good when you were younger (no disrespect to the current Oz). I see why Miho dated & married you.
+Sean TwentyFour haha. Thanks i guess. Yah those were the good ol days.
Last week, it made the news again for forcing teachers to risk
Coronavirus Covid 19 infections by working in unsanitary conditions and also penalizing teachers by deducting from salaries, for students who canceled classes.
Nova English is a company for the inexperienced, unqualified, a rogue rag tag of misfits desperately seeking some modicum of respectability under the false title of English teacher😂😂
Its staff are those possessing sufficent integrity to persist in accumulating a monthly adolescent's allowance from Nova, while simultaneously sacrificing their own integrity in oiling a machinery, which benefits criminals in suits who devalue education and human rights 👍
Any company focusing on number of students and money more than English education isn't always a good place to work.
Yes, very true. With all the competition now it's getting even more terrible.
Should have taught at Hogwarts...."Yer a wizard Ozzie."
LOL, Nice!
+Kimberly Lopez very true. Expecto patronus!
How old were you when you started AEON?
22! Those were the good ol days!
Yah. It is really a foot in the door to Japan and an entry to getting used to teaching.like teacher for dummies.
ozzy can i apply .to your position ..reply.
Lol. I left aeon more than 10 years ago so you might be a bit too late. Haha
I don't know if you already did this video or would even feel comfortable doing it, but would love to hear the story of how you meet your ex wife and life as an inter-racial couple.
thank you for the question and video idea! This might be coming this month if I can film it!
Hi Ozzy I'm an Indian and want to move to Japan as an ALT or English Teacher. Any advice?
Bought my Ozzy Awesome shirt earlier.
+Cesar Vides wow! Really? So did I! Lol. But mine haven't areived yet. Let me know when you get it! Thanks for the support!
My TOEIC score of 965 is higher than every English teachers of my school. They assume I don’t speak or not good at it, big wrong. Can I teach English? I know they prefer white teachers..
As long as you have a degree from a university from a native speaking English country you are good. Color doesn't matter
More love hotel shit pls
+Adrian Jarquin its funny you asked! Coming very soon!
I speak English good
To save money China is best
True. I heard Korea is also good for savings.
@@ozzy78 I haven't researched that as yet, I have Been in China going on my 4th year, it's been an amazing experience on the there hand i had a colleague who planned on going to Japan for over a year and and then the virus made that impossible, a month ago she left for Japan, she is honestly not happy.....
Sushi cam from china
so did pasta, pizza, etc. But generally speaking Pasta is Italian, Sushi is Japanese. Tempura is actually from Portugal but I still consider it Japanese. I consider Ramen, Gyoza, etc. from China. But historically many foods came from different parts of the world so you are right as well! =)
Kevin Start It most definitely did not come from China lol
Saw a group of Indian guys from India dyeing their hair blond at a tokyo night club... they think they can get girls thinking they r white dudes.., funniest shit ever,!!!! People from India amuse me
I completely agree with this comment!
@@koreanpeninsula2116 funny thing is they look even more fucked up than they were before lmao
Oz, Mid-life crisis 😂😂😂😂
