Thought I'd do a little introduction on how I do sound design with my Moog Matriarch. Let me know in the comments if there are more sound design or tutorial type videos you would like to see 🔥

Hey man, I just want to say thank-you so much for this awesome video! You showcase some beautiful sounds and capabilities with this synth that other videos have failed to do. Like the other's who posted here, I'm totally new to synthesis and just picked up the matriarch. Your video has left me more confident that I'll be able to achieve the tones I want out of this beast. THANKYOU! Hopefully you showcase some cool patch ideas in the future - would be SUPER helpful if you did.
The Matriarch is just amazing oh yes other synths can be used but there is something about the Matriarch that is quite special. Always good to learn stuff.
Miles Away do you already have videos on standard patches like PWM and modulating the filter cutoff? To taste you seem to have an EDM background to how you patch. My background is trap based. soundcloud.com/ancientrobotaliens/quarantineandchillthefuckoutbrah
I don't own a Matriarch, and have no money or room for one, but this is very useful. It inspires me to try and do similar things on the synths i do have. Love it!
Wow thanks so much dude! Appreciate the kind donation :) Unfortunately I sold my Matriarch about 6 months ago (towards my Prophet 6) but I will definitely be doing more intro to sound design episodes. Probably on the prophet or Ob since they are so knob per function.
I wish the Moog one sounded anything like as good as this or the Subsequent 37. Such an amazing interface with unreal modulation and tweaking possibilities but yes it just doesn't seem to have any organic warm tone to it. I'd be happy to see more content of pads and chords with this synth.
Thank you very much for these tutorials, much appreciated! In a couple of your videos, you have mentioned that you are not a Keyboardist. Thus, curious how you come up with your sequences, and, are these programmed via a DAW and/or straight into the the various synthesizers. Thank you!
Welcome to the channel! Thanks for watching: I actually answer this question about workflow in this video, shows exactly how I do it! th-cam.com/video/wevrfjst59M/w-d-xo.html
Yooo!!! Big fan of your channel/music! I have a question for you that I hope you can help me out with...so I have an OB-6 and I’m thinking about pairing it up with a monophonic synth obviously for solid bass sounds and those ‘creamy bread and butter’ leads blah blah blah...so I’ve got my eyes set on the Subsequent 37 (and a few others, but I’m leaning more towards the ‘Moog sound’ tbh), however, at the same time the Matriarch is hard to avoid 😅 My question is, putting aside all of the amazingness the Matriarch has to offer, are the bass sounds and leads as good (better maybe?) than a solid mono synth such as the Subsequent 37 that specializes in those sounds? Thanks for all the great content, you’re awesome!
Thanks for the kind words Greg! Great question. For me personally they cover very different grounds: the Matriarch sounds more vintage and 70s/creamy, and lends itself naturally a bit more towards more ambient leads and basses. The Sub37 especially because of its amazing multi drive can get a fair bit more grungy and aggressive than the matriarch, and sounds a bit more dark. I use the sub 37 9/10 now for my basses, but the matriarch I use for almost everything else. I’d personally get the Matriarch unless you really like distorted/driven sounds, because it’s better at more things and it’s sound character is more distinct if that makes sense.
Hey Devin, I also have a Matriarch, and I’ve been experiencing a slight issue that I believe you may have happened across in this video. When you tuned OSC 1 down an octave to spread your paraphonic chording, it sounded like sometimes OSC 1 didn’t track to the lowest note played. I’ve run into this as well. I think it may be a timing thing. OSC 1 seems to track to the first note played, which means I’ve had to play chords one note at a time to make sure my chords aren’t unexpected inversions (which can be cool in the right context, but not when you aren’t expecting it.) Also, just a side note, but have you experienced any unexpected eternal sustain (or failure of the volume envelope to close) when chording in paraphonic mode?
I haven't run into that second problem thankfully! Sounds unfortunately like you might have a faulty model. For the first issue/quirk, if you go into the global settings are start messing with the voice priority mode, you might be able to solve what you are looking for by changing through the different priority options. Let me know if that helps!
@@Reg-Edit if you mean whether something is a dark series or regular it's literally just the panel color. If you mean what version the firmware is you have to plug in your Matriarach over USB MIDI
@@MilesAwayOfficial if I plug in with usb Where does it tell me what version is mate? Does it need an app to display? Thanks for replying, I’ve only had it a day and tbh it feels cheap compared to my sub 37 thin plastic mod wheel and filter without any extra drive am I missing a hidden boost somewhere?
@@Reg-Edit just download the latest firmware on the Moog website and follow the instructions to install it it won't let you install it if it's already the latest firmware! and I think it's going to grow on you! I have the Sub 37 as well and without a doubt I prefer the Matriarch. There's no drive knob because the mixer section is legit the same CP3 mixer from the $30k moog modular systems: as soon as you turn any oscillator past 12:00 o'clock the mixer drives it with a much more musical distortion than the multi drive on the sub 37. Also try plugging the VCF outs into the Cutoff ins to drive the filter with feedback for really gnarly sounds. I did a full review of The Matriarch where I do patch tips if you want to check it out!
PART TWO OUT NOW!

This was super helpful to me as someone new to synthesis, and the owner of the Moog Grandmother. Thanks!!
Glad to hear! The Grandmother is an amazing first synth, congrats! Stick around for more content!

Are you making more videos like this? I have a matriarch and sometimes I struggle with designing sounds. Great tut.

day 3 with my moog matriarch and this thing is a beast even without having to patch things in. Great video sir!
