0:52 18 grand for that combo? I think that's a little bit exaggerated. 12-14k is about right. That being said; the 808 and 909 will keep that value and will work for more decades to come. And; they're super fun to use and the inner search is over. That was at least my experience. I pulled the trigger about two years ago, starting with the 909, followed by the 707 plus 727 and now also an 808. Yes, pricey. But it'll "get you there" immediately. I don't regret any of these purchases. --- --- --- Don't get me wrong, a lot of these new machines are awesome. Especially this compact TR-6S. But instead of emulating the classics, one should use the machine in new ways I think. In all your examples, I instantly hear/feel that none of the originals were used. Since the 909 (80%) and 808 (100%) produce their sounds in the analogue domain, none of the hits sound similiar and they also interact with each other on multiple levels. The most obvious is maybe the 909 snare, which shares its noise part with the clap - so when they are played together, you hear a pretty intense flanging sound in those noise parts. Or when long-decayed 808 sounds are re-triggered - when the previous hit hasn't decayed to zero. Those hits add up and all sound different. Whereas when using samples, all hits sound the same. I have an MPC 2000 in my setup, and I use samples of the 909, 808 and 7x7 in parallel to the actual machines. And that really makes sense, because it's a different approach. Also on many levels. I chose to use samples from NOT my machines in order to have them a little bit different from the start. And I can pitch/tune all sounds on the MPC, play all of them at the same time. For instance on the 808, you have to choose between CLaves and RimShot. In my experience it also has a huge impact HOW you work with a machine. The MPC with its 16 rubber pads makes me come up with very different patterns than using the x0x's step sequencer and so does using TAP-mode on the x0Xs vs. step-mode. Or having two-level steps per instrument PLUS an overall accent lane on the 909 vs. two-level total accent on the 7x7. The accents really make a HUGE difference on the x0Xs imho. --- --- --- #funfact I recently recorded the 808 in 192kHz and was surprised that that wasn't even enough in order to capture all the frequencies. Hi Liam, I am new to your chanel and relatively new to music gear/producing. I am planning to buy a yamaha reface dx and I am looking for a portable drummaschine to combine it with. I wanna jam/create Synthie-Pop, Acid House, Funk, disco, lofi filter house…everything groovy (Chromeo drums are my favs), so the drum sounds should go into those directions. The Roland 707 has the perfect sounds for me, that 80s vibe and claps are awesome. I wanna be able to lay down drum patterns easy, quick and performe with it (using FXs..) and just looping around, having fun with a drummaschine and a synth. I am not so much into modelling every beat. Should go quick in order to jam with the reface over it. What drummaschine/gear would you recommend? Is the Roland TR-6s the right choice? What looper would you recommend to loop the reface dx and the drummaschine? Something simple. I wanna stay dawless and portable (batteries). Thanks, awesome channel by the way😊

Gracias por compartir, i’m not speak inglés y no tener un manual en castellano es una putada o gran error de Roland,no creo que les cueste tanto subir en su web, pues me está costado mucho más descubrir todo su potencial…
A very functional drum machine--BUT--does not sound true to it's predecessors (606, 707, 808. 909) at all. Sounds processed,, squashed and lacking dynamics.
I actually did a blindfold test comparison on TR-6S vs OG TR-808 and most people had no idea which one was which. Many even just liked the 6S better! Here it is: th-cam.com/video/0KTTpNKyOho/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iHFz1xR1aYV3FKHl
Good question! And yes- i've been doing it full time for a while now. Mind you i'm also active on several other platforms which is how it's actually sustainable.
There's a REASON why the 808, 909, and 606 cost thousands of dollars: because they are ANALOG and NOT DIGITAL. Each hit is warm and unique as it is generated for real right there by the hardware--kinda like a real drummer in the room. Plus they have individual outs so you can EQ and shape each drum part to your liking. The 707 is digital but it has individual outs as well. Finally, these machines are rare and hard to replace because it costs more to make analog drum machines with individual outs. You pay for what you get.
I don’t buy it. The TR 6s also has individual outs via usb software. The 707 is a fraction of the price of the 808 + 909. I love analog gear and I understand what you’re saying but to pay 8 000$ + for an 808 vs paying 500$ for the 707, there’s a lot of hype involved there- it’s an iconic drum machine that everyone’s used, when it was affordable. I’d love to own one just to have it. I’m planning on doing a blindfold test maybe with the 808 vs TR 6S and am curious if people will be able to recognize the difference.
The REASON, Brian, is that they haven't been made for 40 years. The analogue hype simply multiplies the price set by their scarcity. As for the "kinda like a real drummer in the room", what are you smoking?
Programmed and or drag n drop translates to I don't make my own music but I did a thing and now you can buy my sample pack of all these sounds I "programmed". Im sure you cool af and probably have good taste in music.. but this wanna be musician thing is hackjob artistry at best. And you only relate to 14 year olds with their parents cc. If your sick of peoples critiques then just drum out your percussion on a kit or pads or literally anything that demonstrates musicianship. Mouse clicks don't count. But hey you own a fuck ton of drum machines. Pay your local music store for drum lessons and in like 3 months you probably wouldn't ever have a use to "program" shit again. Unless your a developer.
Wow…you put a lot of effort into this one- I can only imagine what it’s like to carry this sort of energy throughout life. Heavy stuff- but hey I respect the hustle! You respecting yourself though…looks like that’s another story. Funny you say all that though…I was a hired session drummer for about 15 years, have a bachelors degree in jazz performance on drums and started giving drum lessons when I was 17 😂 😂 😂 and now I’m exploring the electronic realm. No lie. Creativity can go in any direction my dude. Anyway- take care of yourself. Ps: as for making my own music I invite you to stream! 😉 www.hyperfollow.com/lkmusic Cheers,

Tr 6s is a great choice for sure! If you want a similar thing but with more voices you could also go with the tr 8s
@@LiamKillen thanks for your reply. Do you have any recommendations for a Looper to loop the sounds of the reface dx over the drums? Something simple. Or can I connect the reface with the tr6s and loop the sounds in the tr6s?
The cheapest way to go is with your DAW! Logic + Ableton are two great choices
@@LiamKillen thanks, yes thats true^^. But if I wanna go with an external looper, what could you recommend? Since the drums loop automatically on the trs6, only the sounds of the reface have to be looped, or?
In that case so think you’d have to find a looper pedal or sample the yamaha riff through another sampling instrument like maybe the MPC One/op1.
Lots of groove ... great walk through as always .. thorough .. helpful.. versatility plus .. fabulous .. thanks !
My pleasure !
Are you in midi mode ?
I actually can’t remember 🤔
Thanks for the video. Great question too. I would like a 909 comparison.
I’ll consider this Emily!
thank you for watching 🙂
great video! specifically recreating all of those famous songs drum machine patterns!
Thank u! 🍻
how do you load these?
using an SD card
Yeah, and put these in the export or backup folder? Nothing there when I turn the box on. Am I missing something?
You need to program the SD card to your TR 6S! Google “program ds card tr 6s” you should be able to find something. Can’t remember exactly how to do it
Guessing those are Canadian dollars or just Roland MSRP? Brand new from just about everywhere for $409.99 which is even more of a steal
oouuuu yeah i should have specified. I’ll make sure to clear that up in the comments tomorrow.
haha 1 min in....I like this guy !
Hey thanks! 😊
funky dope thanks cuz
My pleasure :-)
beringer does 808s and 909s for just under 300. why no mention liam? is this an advert? dont mean to sound rude. i watch u often great channel my guy!
Too much controversy around Behringer products- that company is sketch and rips everyone off.I don't mention them in any of my videos. And no this is not an advert.
@@LiamKillen thanks this was an eye opener. after u said this i went off to see what you were talking about. ur right they are assholes thanks for having honour ✌
Compare the AcidLabs Miami with the 808. The Miami sounds more like an 808 than the 808 😂
lolol
Is analogic?
it is not.
hey, ive been torn between this and a op-z for a strong sequencing drum machine for glitchy music, which would u reccomend?
opz is more immediate and better for performance FX
just made improv of tr6s and tb03 with tr editor on my channel!
Oh nice thanks for letting us know!
707 is the king. Underrated
It needs more love.
Behringer need to release a 707...
I don't like Behringer.
Gracias por compartir, i’m not speak inglés y no tener un manual en castellano es una putada o gran error de Roland,no creo que les cueste tanto subir en su web, pues me está costado mucho más descubrir todo su potencial…
I can’t seem to copy this text. I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you’re saying!
@@LiamKillen basically he says he is fckd because the instructions manual is not in Spanish.
Best 909 Pattern is in Skinny Puppys Smothered Hope😊
😏
@@LiamKillen imho ;)
Compare it to the Synsonic Drums
Noted! I don’t know anything about those
I can’t do the digital just don’t sound the same
You’re the first one to say this! ( one of the first at least)
@@LiamKillen digital not bad maybe Nostalgia or the fact device to device sounds different especially with aged component but I kind of dig that
I see what you mean- the 808 is bouncier + sings more
@@LiamKillen just got the rd6 to show some authentic analog love the 606 don’t get a lot of love 808 909 get the acclaim I personally like 606 and 808
606 and 707 are also both super dope
background music / samples in the beginning are way too loud dude. still, thanks for the video.
my guy
I see some 606 going cheap sometimes
Better off getting the 6s IMO
@@LiamKillen yes. But since it's digital drum machines, isn't it better to get the mc101 instead, so you get the drum AND the synths?
I always just hear a sonic atmosphere off these tr6s/tr8s machines...good or bad it's always there...probably perfect for deep house or something
Really? Like a hiss or something?
@@LiamKillen no, i think its just the overall sound, its not bad, just kind of an clean tone to it..
Yeah it’s hella clean.
News Flash: Most people are idiots. That's why only a few people make great music or do great things. @@LiamKillen
Can you make enough money off your TH-cam channel and music sales to quit your job?
It’s scarcity + iconic ism (lol) . Is the 606/707 just as scarce? not sure.
@@LiamKillen The 707 is digital and plays back samples.
Yeah that’s my bad
sound cloud is music ripped from youtube aka bootleg copys of music
🤔
😉 www.hyperfollow.com/lkmusic
Cheers,
The overproduction in this video is incredibly annoying.
Sorry you think that. Thanks for watching anyway!
Another toy from the worst company today.
What’s a synth/drum machine that you don’t consider a toy?
@@LiamKillen Roland was the best in the 80´s, the worst nowadays, living out of bad digital copies of themselves.
What’s a synth/drum machine that you actually like though?
@@LiamKillen moderns, only Isla sp 2400, the rest sound as crap, specially Rolands Airas.
