I'm one of the lucky dudes who got a Model 2 in 1989 from Sam Ash for like $150... That J90c is legendary. Just amazing rock tones with picking nuance that I could never get from another pickup. I am always looking for J90cs to this day. Great video, super cool guitars. Have fun!!
I was just wondering about the difference between the RTM and the regular JB. I like the JB I had in the 90s and was thinkiing about dropping one in my new Ibanez Saber.
J-90c has always been my favorite pickup!! This proves it. I like them for different things. The J-90c cuts through a mix when recording with it. Thanks!!
I liked the RTM a lot..seems to be an improved JB..I have never been a fan of the JB..the rubbery bass and shrillness just wasn’t my thing…but it cuts…I have an 89 Charvel 475XL with a J50C in the bridge, which sounds great..Jackson did a great job with those pickups back then..The J90C is great…I liked it and the RTM the best…
I Just bought a never used Red Charvel Model 2 only 2 Days ago here in Germany . Complete with all Documents & Tools and the original Charvel Chainsaw Case. I still can't believe it 😊 the First owner sayd that he found it inside a small Store a couple of years ago
@@CoffeeDrinker71 yes IT was online....i'm searching for an old Charvel with only one Humbucker and Floyd on It for a Long Time....and now i found a Brandnew one build in 1987 😁

Thanks brother! That JB really does have some extra bite! I think it helps it punch through quite a bit differently than the others. Thanks for watching!!!
Can't go wrong with any of those pickups. Each one sounds great. The JB stands out with that distinct upper mid focus and loose bottom. I'm liking the RTM the best here. It just has the right amount of everything and sounds like DeMartini.
Thanks for watching! I agree...and based on this experience I have installed the custom shop version of the RTM into another Charvel (MIJ San Dimas) and it sounds amazing!
If there is a pickup that sounds like DeMartini, it has to be the JB. JB is the sound of Ratt. Both DeMartini and Crosby used it predominantly in the 80s.
The python is just soooo sick :) Always wanted one. I think the white one with the cross is cool, too (Frenchie). I'd have to say the pickups all sound very similar and all the classic riffs were written on a JB as far as I know. I'd like to compare these against the original Duncan Holdsworth...which I heard was Jake E Lee's first pickup prior to the JB (?). There was a company called WCR I think that was making a JB copy, but only at 13K. I forget what it was called, but it sounded amazing. Personally, I'd love to hear you give the Dimarzio Dominion a go and compare against the JB. That is my other favorite pickup along with EMG 81 and 85.
Thanks man! I had a lot of fun building the python. Yep, they all sounded close in this setting. The RTM just has a nice soft top end that can easily be heard in the room. ;) The JB has a little extra bite, though! A person couldn't go wrong with any of them.
Anyone else hearing a Lynch kinda thing from the J90c? The JB has a little harshness to it but I’m sure that’ll help it cut through a mix with ease, RTM sounds like a slightly smoothed out JB
Nice. Ive got a 2009 USA San Dimas and 2 DK24 HH FR's, The DK's have the Shred Duncan's and I like how bright they are and I replaced the JB and 59 in my USA with Suhr Doug Aldridge zebras before they were using Zebras in the pro mods, they sound great. I did buy a 1985 usa Pointy in 1986 new but it had a Kahler and a single Jackson PU, i had a bad Kahler that broke hi E strings and just wore out the nut, traded that one for a USA R1 which i stupidly sold off for an AK74. Love Charvels and grew up on RATT! Saw them several time in the 80's in Portland ME. I like that u used real snake skin!
Thanks for the compliments! That sounds like a great collection you have there as well! Yeah, the Aldrich is a great pickup. I actually have that one installed in a Japanese Pro-Mod series San Dimas. Great pickup!
I’ve heard some guys say that Jake E Lee and Warren had Alnico 2 magnets swapped into JBs back in the day. I don’t know if that’s true but it might sound cool.
Besides the overall "sweetness" of that RTM pickup, what strikes me the most about this particular guitar (the DeMartini model that is)...is how great that neck feels! It is simply superb. I noticed they were still using quartersawn maple for this sig. models, while only using standard cut maple on the other non-sig. models.
General consensus here in the comments shows the J90c as the clear winner, and the JB coming in 2nd place. I have a j90c in my charvel and it does sound very good. Some say the j90c is jacksons version of a Super Distortion, so if you like that sound you know where to look.
Hey Brian, Ive seen all your guitar builds, and I think you do a great job on em. But have you ever considered building a VH 2 Bumblebee guitar, I think It would be an amazing vid and a fine addition to your VH guitars
Hi Braden! Thank you for the compliments! Honestly I've never considered building one for myself. I've had a few friends asking about it, but I have not considered it. Maybe in the near future??? :)
@CoffeeDrinker71 hey my friend I got a northern ash body coming from Locke I ask them a question about treating the body before paint an they said be okay just too prime it an that would be ok
It's funny you mention that. I've been looking at those 375's lately! I love the amber flame models! Anyway, I agree....and the comments here support keeping the J90C as well. It's a fantastic pickup.
All of these pickups sounded solid, including the Jackson on the blue Charvel. A friend owned that same Charvel model and I was very impressed with the pickup, which was somewhat similar to a Duncan Custom, which I also dig. In the 80s when I was also going for that Demartini/Lynch tone before finding my own tone I experimented with a lot of amps and pickups. The closest I ever came was when my band was rehearsing at a studio in the west side of L.A. which owned a modded Laney 100 AOR Pro Tube Lead stack. It sounded amazing, and it had that exact tone from Invasion. Now, I know Ratt endorsed Laney and while they used them on tour with their Marshalls, or at least for backup, they didn't record with them. Every album pre-Reach for the Sky was all Marshall, usually the same Marshall they recorded the first album with, although Warren would drive Beau Hill up a wall testing out thirty plexi heads he owned. I saw Shark Island around this time opening for Keel and their guitarist was using a Laney AOR stack that also sounded modded. Sounded amazing. The issue with the AOR series is that they had this massive bass boost that would kick in with the gain when you pulled the boost knobs. So a lot of guys would get a mod done just to cut the bass. On subsequent Laney models, like those endorsed by Paul Gilbert, they didn't have this issue. The AOR line was also very unreliable. Laney have since upped their game and I love their amps. The pickups I was using back then when I nailed the Invasion tone were either a JB or a Duncan Distortion, because at this time I swapped out the JB for the more aggressive Distortion. Both are great pickups which I highly recommend. Both are equally great, but they just do different things. The JB is far more adaptable to most players and styles. The Distortion has a great, tight low end with a lot of bite and no mud and lot of great harmonics and sustain. It's a matter of preference. I say why not use both depending on what guitar they work best in. L.A. in the 80s was ground zero for shred guitar and cutting edge gear and tone junkies. A fun scene. I tried all the new amps that came down the line from the Mark III Boogies to the Soldano SLO, Bogners, VHT Pitbull, Engl, Rivera, etc.

The JB just sounds awful. Too fuzzy. I prefer the J90c and the other pick up.
Yes, the JB is hit or miss sometimes with me. I think it helps to roll back the volume just a touch (which I didn't do here). Also, the J90C is getting a lot of love in the comments which is cool to see. Jackson definitely nailed it on that particular pickup. Thanks for watching!
